A dud. This novel was a dud and failed to sizzle. The storyline and plot are good. But I'm not one in for a weak minded weak hearted female charcter. Love Woodiwiss, but not her best work.

flame and the flower. My most favorite book! I have read this book so much! The paper books have fallen apart! Mystery, love, murder, and history. Wow! Read read read never enough!

Great Book!. I loved this book! I have read it several times and never get tired of Brandon and Heather. Theirs is a true love story. I also love that Woodiwiss brings them to her other books about their son, Beau, and Brandon's brother Jeff. Woodiwiss writes a hero like no other and she certainly doesn't disappoint here!

For what it is, it’s well written. Of course the actions of the male character in this book are appalling by modern standards— however, this is a theme prevalent in historical romance fiction and there’s a reason for it— it sells — by women, who don’t condone rape and would never wish to be raped. I get it, not your cup of tea— so don’t read historical romance fiction.

Top in my top favorites.. Great author, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss's greatest book. I can never read this Cinderella story enough. The best Cinderella story out there.

YOU CAN NEVER GLORIFY RAPE!!!. How can anyone condone this book? How can anyone read this and not be completely sickened? I tried to stick with it. I made it up until their wedding night and I couldn’t take it anymore. People on here saying “well yea it was rape but that’s just how it happened back then” you should be ashamed of yourselves. I cannot express enough how disgusting it it and the author should be boycotted! 🤬

Awful Book. The premise of this book is appalling. The “hero” casually rapes an innocent young woman over and over again, then gets angry when he’s forced to marry her.

TypeALover. My mother recommended this book to me as it has always been one of her favorites. It also seemed fitting to read the book proclaimed as the first of the historical romance genre as pioneered by Mrs. Woodiwiss. After reading it, I understood how it could be responsible for this. It is now one of my all time favorites. The main characters, Heather and Brandon are well fleshed out with distinct personalities that create great sexual tension and drama. It is wonderful that Woodiwiss continues their story 25 years later in "The Elusive Flame", starring their son, Beau and themselves. I reread "The Flame and the Flower" every year, I love it so much. It's become a close friend.

Love this author!. This book is filled with all kinds of emotions. Yes rape is not acceptable. But unfortunately in that time period it happened. Aside from this, I love this book and all the others with the Birmingham’s. I definitely recommend any of her books.

Re-release of a book from the 80’s. I enjoyed this in the 80’s. Not sure I’d like it as much now (others have mentioned the initial “rape” scene).

Beautiful story. A beautiful story with twists and turns. The details had me in the moment, admiring the gowns and sights. Looking forward to the next one!

Rape isn’t okay. The first encounter between the two main characters consists of him taking her virginity without consent, then acting confused after. I can’t continue to read a book like this.

The Flame and the Flower. Yes, rape is totally unacceptable. But, why don’t you sit down and spend some time reading Nobel Prize winning and Pulitzer winning books. Try some Toni Morrison or some Cormac McCarthy. Writers write about life; the good, the bad, and the ugly. In other words, life. Doesn’t mean they condone the behavior of the fictional characters they write about.
