Wie kaum ein Autor wurde Walter Kempowski von den beiden deutschen Staaten geprägt. "Im Block" erzählt von einer Zwangsgemeinschaft am Rande der Gesellschaft.
1948 wird Kempowski wegen angeblicher Spionage zu 25 Jahren Haft verurteilt. Nach acht Jahren im DDR-Zuchthaus Bautzen kommt er frei. 1969 erscheint sein literarischer Bericht dazu.
"Im Block", das ist ein Leben in drangvoller Enge, isoliert, inhaltsarm. Die Häftlinge bilden eine Gesellschaft, geprägt vom Eingeschlossensein, von qualvoll gedehnter Zeit. Eindringliche Bilder zeigen eine Existenz, die das verweigert, was menschliche Selbstverwirklichung ausmacht: Arbeit, Liebe, Besitz.
