Britt-Marie, 63, är faktiskt inte passivt aggressiv. Det är bara det att smuts, repor och felaktigt organiserade besticklådor får henne att skrika på insidan. Hon har just lämnat ett 40-årigt äktenskap och liv som hemmafru, och det enda arbete hon kan få finns i Borg, ett finanskrisdrabbat samhälle vid en väg där allt är nedlagt utom den ölstinkande pizzerian.
Britt-Marie avskyr fotboll, Borg har inget annat än fotbollen kvar. Det är sannerligen inte en början på en underbar vänskap. Men när byns ungdomslag behöver en tränare så desperat att de till slut är redo att ge jobbet till vem som helst,då bryr de sig inte om petitesser som att hon absolut inte vill ha det. När Britt-Marie dessutom blir utbjuden på dejt av en polis och bryter handen i ett solarium finns det ingen återvändo.
"Britt-Marie var här" är en kärlekshistoria och en kärleksförklaring. Om en kvinna som väntat ett helt liv på att hennes ska börja, och om samhällen vid vägar där fotboll och pizzerior är det sista som överger människorna.
