48 Hours by William R. Forstchen Book Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of the smash hit One Second After series comes 48 Hours, a nail-biting and prescient thriller about a solar storm with the power to destroy the world's electrical infrastructure

In 48 hours, the Earth will be hit by a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) from the Sun, a "Carrington Event" that has the power to shut down and possibly destroy the world's electrical infrastructure. To try and prevent permanent damage, everything goes dark prior to the hit: global communications are shut down; hospital emergency generators are disconnected; the entire internet, media broadcasting, and cell phone systems are turned off.

Will the world's population successfully defend itself in the wake of the CME, or will mass panic lead to the breakdown of society as we know it?

William R. Forstchen is at his best in 48 Hours, a tale of the resilience of American citizens when faced with a crisis.

Waste of time. Huge fan of the authorā€™s previous books. This one, however, seems rushed, filled with jaded notions of character traits , the characters hollow images of projected American exceptionalism. Youā€™ve got typical ideas that have been so overused (military bad, gov bad), and straight up unbelievable courageousness (people happily letting go) that the book strings you along until the equally baffling and unsatisfying end. Three stars given because, although this book was a literal waste of my time, the authorā€™s other books are compelling and interesting reads that are for those that, like me, wanted to like this book and almost did.

Thought provoking. Loved it. I hope there is a sequel. What would life be like after such an event?

48 Hours. Iā€ve read all of Mr. Fortschenā€™s John Matherson books and couldnā€™t wait to read 48 Hours. It did not leave me disappointed! Well written, well researched, and captivating. I read from front to back during a 15 hour power outage from a spring storm that came through our area. I hope our world never comes to something like this, but this book makes you open your eyes to the possibilities our species could face.

Disappointing. I could not wait for this book to come out after reading the one second after trilogy. But this.... this was so disappointing. Way to much boring scientific jargon. To much bouncing around to other characters. Not enough action. Just very poorly done.

A General Disappointment. I found the story forced and almost gave up on it. The drama between what was happening in Washington DC and Missouri was a stretch beyond the imagination. It was really a disappointment and needed an epilogue. I give it 3* as I am feeling generous but I wouldnā€™t recommend a buy nor would I encourage anyone to waste the time to read it, unless the world has ended and all the other books have been destroyed.

48 hours. Not what I was expecting after reading his previous books. Very heavy on deep conversation. Not a lot of action.
