Nearly excellent. There are several things that stopped this book from being a 4* or even 5* for me. Most of the book was very slow moving and at times rather boring. It could have been shorter. The ending was better, although perhaps too rushed in comparison!, but several anomalies, which had been bugging me, were satisfactorily explained. Disappointingly I did guess what was happening before it was revealed to us. The author is undoubtedly an above average writer but there were a number of grammatical mistakes which jarred. Why, oh why, was it written in the present tense? That added nothing to the telling but was irritating. Even the victim’s narration, up to their final moments, was in the present tense. The ‘voice’ of the girl next door was ridiculous. It wasn’t in the slightest way convincing or like anything any teenager I’ve ever come across might say. The story was basically a very good idea. With a few tweaks I’d have been heaping praise on the book. If you can ignore the things that annoyed me, you will be in for a treat. I will look out for more books by this author but if they are in the present tense I won’t be buying any of them.
