The Deserter by Nelson DeMille & Alex Demille Book Summary

*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*

An “outstanding” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) blistering thriller featuring a brilliant and unorthodox Army investigator, his enigmatic female partner, and their hunt for the Army’s most notorious—and dangerous—deserter from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille.

When Captain Kyle Mercer of the Army’s elite Delta Force disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer’s Army commanders leaves no doubt: the trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has willfully disappeared.

When Mercer is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela, by an old Army buddy, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America—preferably alive. Brodie knows this is a difficult mission, made more difficult by his new partner’s inexperience, by their undeniable chemistry, and by Brodie’s suspicion that Maggie Taylor is reporting to the CIA.

With ripped-from-the-headlines appeal, an exotic and dangerous locale, and the hairpin twists and inimitable humor that are signature DeMille, The Deserter is the first in a timely and thrilling new series from an unbeatable team of True Masters: the #1 New York Times bestseller Nelson DeMille and his son, award-winning screenwriter Alex DeMille.

The Deserter. Terrible book. Nothing happened until the last pages. So boring

One of the best books I’ve read!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Out f-ing standing

Fascinating and engrossing. The story is intriguing and the pace quick. Fitting end to the prey and predator. Grim backstory and ultimately endorses patriotism.

Totally predictable and so wordy. I’m a fan of this writer generally. But this book just dragged on and on and the banter and construct comments got old after a while. The protagonists were enjoyable and the insight into Venezuela was a real eye opener but overall I found myself skimming over long discussions and descriptions. And the end was so disappointing. Not to spoil it but there was no resolution. I could think of a half dozen ways to end it but we were left with a half dozen loose threads. Not his best book I’m afraid.

Another Great DeMille Book. I liked the tone this one had compared to the last few. I think the inclusion of Alex DeMille breathed fresh life into an already great authors repertoire.

Great story but missed a major part of Venezuela history. Great story. Very odd that it does not discuss the role of socialism in the tragic demise of Venezuela. But such a great story this massive oversight is forgiven if not understandable

The Deserter. Nelson DeMille & Alex DeMille. Kyle Mercer former Delta Operative now labeled as a deserter. He was ordered to eliminate all of the villagers by a CIA operative Colonel. He told the colonel he could no longer do this type of operation. The Colonel told him a lot of his men disagreed with his decision. A lie. He deserted for all the right reasons. An excellent read!! Enjoyed immensely!!

Shallow characters, unfulfilling conclusion. Great story and fantastic plot but it really lacked depth. And the climax comes to a logical yet totally unrewarding, unconsumated conclusion leaving the reader staring in bewildered awe at the words THE END. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? I had amazing expectations for this work and was left depressingly disappointed. Good book which could have been much better. Seek a new editor Mssrs DeMille.

Always a thriller. Kept me guessing the whole way

Writing was good, plot was shallow. This is the entire book: Kyle and Taylor go to Caracas, they find a strip club with info where Kyle is, travel to the jungle, steal a boat to go down a river, find Kyle but Scott and Taylor become prisoner, they escape as prisoner and take Kyle as prisoner instead, all 3 go back down river to an airstrip where Kyle and Worley kill each other. The end. The writing was good but the book could have been cut in half, and then expanded upon. It would have been nice to see Scott and Taylor find Kyle and then help get Kyle justice for what happened to him. It just felt the whole story was a lot of looking around and snooping in a poor country just for two guys to get killed and then the story ends abruptly and we get no closure.

Good book. Plausible story line. Interesting look at life in Venezuela and different US govt military groups. De Mille banter is fun but overdone. Better story at 1/4 shorter.

Fresh; witty and thrilling. Alex and Nelson together bring a fresh take on Nelson’s style in this fast-paced thriller that is exciting, funny and interesting. Can’t wait for more from this duo!

Utter waste of my money. DeMille must be getting paid by the word.

Deserter. Boring

The deserter. Another great Nelson DeMille book! New characters but fresh setting in Venezuela. Great plotting and after a slow start the story really takes off.

Not his best. I read 4 of his novels in a few days, the were great. I’m glad I did not read this first. Slow predicable story line. Not his best work

The Deserter. Poorly written, painfully shallow characters. Sophomoric, annoying and repetitive references to the main character’s horniness makes it sound as if a 14 year-old male helped write it. Too many coincidences that worked in favor of the two main characters and frankly, too many holes in the plot.

Fantastic. Great as usual, like the new characters.

Outstanding !!. This is a superb book, great character development and story line.. Could not put it down, finished it in 2 very late nights. Best I have read this year.Look forward to Blood Lines.

TOO MUCH DETAIL!. Too much detail that does not add excitement, context or background to the plot. Too much irrelevant introspection by lead characters which do not help develop the characters. While reading, I kept on thinking “Common! Let’s move the story already!”, becoming impatient. The attempt at humor in the dialogues and repartees was overdone, the flippant remarks became stale and corny. Overal, bad writing!

Starts slow. This book starts slow. Too much talking. But then takes off it is really good.

The Deserter. I love and have collected all of Demille’s books and this one is as fantastic as each of his previous ones! I heartily recommend it! I am looking forward to another book from Nelson and his son😎

The Deserter. Great Story! Excellent writing!

A Tortuous Road Trip. I had a friend in college named Jeff who was convinced he was the funniest fellow in the entire school; he could not have been more delusional. This book is like taking a road trip across country with Jeff. You will be looking for the first Greyhound bus stop before you leave California.

Classic DeMille. Gripping story, human characters with that trademark sarcasm, an enjoyable, can’t put it down read. Highly enjoyable!

Was a great storyteller. Ending is stupid for his caliber of writing. Big letdown!

The Deserter. Very disappointing and boring. A complete reversal from the well written page turning experience that I’ve had with most Grisham novels.

The Deserter. One of the best books I’ve ever read. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

“The war is over, the good guys lost.” Leonard Cohen. Another tale of the cost of war. If I didn’t know better, I would say Mr. DeMille is a pacifist. The troops are now home from the Middle East but the men and women who fought there, who tried to overcome the medieval religious beliefs that the Taliban enforced upon the population, they have left parts of their souls behind. This is the story of one such soldier and the team of CID investigators whose mission it was to bring him home to face military justice. The author dives into US policy in third world nations. The setting is Venezuela with its huge oil reserves and crumbled economy. A great read and pertinent now more then ever.

Abrupt ending. Great story and a very enjoyable read, but the ending was abrupt and sudden...like The Sopranos fade to black ending That being said I’m looking forward to a sequel...

Eh.. Wanted to like this book, but I could not see how the main characters would ever interact with each other to make a likable team, and they never did. And the weird occasional attempt at sexual tension (all on the behalf of the male character) fell flat. Had a hard time keeping my interest and normally I love this genre.

The Deserter. I have been a long time fan of Nelson deMille - “The General’s Daughter”, “Charm School”, “The Gate House”, etc., until now. “The Deserter” must be the most boring book I have ever read. Too many long, long chapters, too many unnecessary descriptions to fill up the pages and just too many words! While I usually finish a book within two or three days, I have been struggling to get through this for over a week and finally gave up with about four more chapters left. I can’t remember ever giving up on a book before, but I just couldn’t make it to the end. It seems that an original great author has lost his edge when he takes on an associate writer and can no longer provide interesting characters and plots. Sorry to see this happen to Mr. deMille

DeMille Does It Again. Another can’t put down book by DeMille. He blends current events and very possible future events together in a fast paced thriller.

Deserter. Nice effort. Somewhat abrupt and unsatisfying ending. The book might have been a hundred or so pages too long.

Just OK. 1300 pages of build up and a 2 page finale. Fun story with a lot of twists and turns but the ending….. not so good!

The Deserter. Excellent story in line with Apocalypse Now and Demilles greatness. Interesting read about the war in Afghanistan and what Valenzuela has become. Shame this was written before Bidens disaster in Afghanistan. I’m sure there are thousands of upset soldiers regarding that mess.
