Fair Warning by Michael Connelly Book Summary

The hero of The Poet and The Scarecrow is back in this thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly. Jack McEvoy, the journalist who never backs down, tracks a serial killer who has been operating completely under the radar—until now.

Veteran reporter Jack McEvoy has taken down killers before, but when a woman he had a one-night stand with is murdered in a particularly brutal way, McEvoy realizes he might be facing a criminal mind unlike any he's ever encountered.

Jack investigates—against the warnings of the police and his own editor—and makes a shocking discovery that connects the crime to other mysterious deaths across the country. Undetected by law enforcement, a vicious killer has been hunting women, using genetic data to select and stalk his targets.

Uncovering the murkiest corners of the dark web, Jack races to find and protect the last source who can lead him to his quarry. But the killer has already chosen his next target, and he's ready to strike.

Terrifying and unputdownable, Fair Warning shows once again why "Michael Connelly has earned his place in the pantheon of great crime fiction writers" (Chicago Sun-Times).

Good but not great. I only recommend this to hard-core Connelly fans who enjoy the rush and can forgive him an occasional over-the-top story with too many characters and dizzying plot twists.

Great!. Another great book by Michael Connelly, excellent writing, storyline and in-depth understanding of the facts referred to in the story. Buy it!

Jack is just plain stupid. Of all of Michael Connelly’y characters I dislike Jack McEvoy the most. I’ll speak to the character here, not the author. Some may laud his journalistic zeal, but I think he’s single minded and selfish. His desire to be first in line in actuality perpetuates the negatives with journalists today. His quote “I’m the press, I have a right to be here” shows just how out of touch he is. He feels his rights usurp common sense, and this is why I don’t like him. I’m going to go into a soliloquy here, but in his love live, again his stupidity comes to the forefront. Let me just say that he deserves to be alone. Michelle could do better! Good story, but frustrating character to follow.

Fair Warning. Another outstanding book by this author! I’ve read every book written by this author, and am never disappointed. I learned a lot about DNA analysis that I didn’t know, and have always believed that that industry should be closely monitored and tracked by federal regulators. My only criticism is that some of Jack’s dialogue with his reporter colleagues sounded like high school newspaper writers arguing about bylines. Not the same Jack in The Poet and Scarecrow. Hope Jack and Rachel will become an investigative team in future books and Jack will mature and stop his self defeating behaviors. I read this in a few hours because I couldn’t wait to see if the monster Shrike would be stopped.

Good story line. Good plot with credible actors. Killer could have been more devious and more prominent in the story.

Good read. Good read. It was slow starting for me but later I didn’t want it to end.

Entertaining throughout. Different Connelly book in that not written from perspective of law enforcement but from purview of private citizen. Well paced and skillfully written.

Great book. Excellent murder mystery.

Blossom. The book was great and I couldn’t put it down. Michael Connelly addresses many of the concerns we all have regarding the abuses that can take place under the internet. It’s a great thing but there’s always someone who has issues and looks for victims to exploit. Looking forward to the next book. Will Jack and Rachel ever get together?

Fair Warning. I love the twists and turns. This author writes books that I can’t put down.

Fair Warning. It’s great to see Mr Connelly back to the top of his game with another great Jack McEvoy book. I love the Bosh series of books but felt the writing was getting tired and retreaded. It goes to show fans how talented Connelly is with fresh material and characters. More McEvoy and less Bosh unless you can freshened him up!

Boring. I usually really enjoy this author’s work, but I finally quit near the halfway point. This book literally reads like a petty rant against DNA privacy laws with virtually NOTHING happening beyond a reporter running around asking questions with little purpose other than to give the author a soapbox. A $1.99 price would still have left me feeling cheated out of a dollar.

typical Connelly!. excellent premise, true to life investigation, believable resolution…..worth reading

Okay.. Harder work than I’m used to with Connelly.

Good page turner. I enjoyed this book. Quite different from MC’s other work in the Bosch series and it’s spin off’s.

Disappointing!. I read all of Connelly’s books and enjoyed them. He is unsuccessfully trying to introduce new characters. This one is by far his weakest. It looks like he is out of ideas. Time to retire?

Big fan!!!. Storyline involves internet, public testing, looking for lost past. Well done

Like his approach to what it’s about..... Great read....consistent with Michael Connolly books?

Fair Warning. I have read all of Michael Connelly’s books and this is the only one I did not like. Story line and characters were great, but to much technical information for me. Not exciting!

Fair Warning. 4.5/5 Stars Interesting plot with clever twists. Interesting characters. I look forward to the sequel. Hal R

Great story. It was great reading about Jack McEnoy again. Loved the story ... DNA is fascinating. Another great Michael Connelly book!

Fair Warning. This was a good murder mystery and a page turner. It seemed less convincing than some other Connelly books. It’d be 3&1/2 really and improbable.

Least favorite book by this author. I just couldn’t get into this. Read about 80 pages and then forwarded to the last 20. Predictable. This author has written much better books

Really good…surprised me.. I read many books and this one stepped beyond the typical. Good story, proven characters and topics relevant to our real world. I rarely give a 5. Peace

FAIR WARNING. Such a disappointment! I have purchased and read most of Michael Connelly’s books on my iPad over this last year, during the pandemic. I have enjoyed them so much. The main character ,Jack McEvoy, is a big jerk, I have no respect for him at all, as he is rude, self centered, self serving, self consumed....and he is boring!!

Disappointing. I’m a long time Michael Connelly fan, but Fair Warning isn’t up to par.

Fair Warning. Glad Jack & Rachelle are back together! They make terrific team.

Disappointing. Very lame effort. I usually enjoy this authors books but found the protagonist, Jack, to be unevenly sketched, the plot to be filled with holes and the concluding scenes to be more, let’s wrap this up and go for a beer, than a well thought out denouement. Waste of twelve bucks.

Fair warning. Great ideas, great writing!

Great story line. Excellent read
