ÜBER DAS BUCH Die Biographie Beethovens von Romain Rolland erschien erstmals im Jahr 1903 als Teil einer kleinen Reihe »heroischer Biographien«. Laut Stefan Zweig war es Rollands Ansinnen, mit diesen Monographien zu zeigen, »wie ein Beethoven, wie ein Händel, wie alle diese Menschen ureinsam gegen die Welt standen und aus dieser Einsamkeit eine höhere Kraft ziehen«. Für Rolland ist Beethoven »die Verkörperung des Heldentums in der ganzen modernen Kunst«, er sieht in ihm den »größten und besten Freund der Leidenden, der Kämpfenden«. Die hier vorliegende deutsche Übersetzung von Langnese-Hug erschien erstmals 1918 und erlebte bis in die 60er Jahre mehrere Neuauflagen. Die Rechtschreibung wurde der heutigen Schreibweise angepasst. Der Inhalt wurde mit einer Vielzahl erläuternder Anmerkungen versehen. Der Umfang des Werkes entspricht ca. 160 Buchseiten. ÜBER DEN AUTOR Romain Rolland (1866-1944) war ein französischer Schriftsteller, Musikkritiker und Pazifist. 1915 erhielt er den Literaturnobelpreis.
