Peintre officiel du Second Empire, tantôt honni tantôt follement admiré, il fut l’un des tout premiers artistes à peindre l’Orient d’après nature. Romantique malgré lui, dandy et sauvage, misanthrope et mondain, ce grand mélancolique admiré par Baudelaire influença de nombreux peintres tels Signac, Van Gogh ou Cézanne, lequel observant Femmes d’Alger affirma : "Nous y sommes tous dans ce Delacroix."
