Installé à Jérusalem à partir de 1938, il s'imposera comme un penseur incontournable et sera invité dans le monde entier. Son destin exceptionnel croise ceux de Herzl, Freud, Einstein, Rosenzweig, Kafka, Zweig, Scholem, Gandhi, Bachelard, Jung, Heidegger, Levinas, Ben Gourion et de tant d'autres, comme en témoigne sa correspondance foisonnante. Buber est non seulement un grand philosophe de l'altérité (Je et Tu), de la piété mystique (Les Récits hassidiques) et du dialogue judéo-chrétien (Deux types de foi), mais il est aussi le héraut infatigable d'un sionisme humaniste cherchant sans cesse la paix avec les Arabes, et un dénonciateur des totalitarismes hitlérien et stalinien.
