El Chacho, subtitulado Último caudillo de la montonera de los llanos, aborda la biografía de Vicente Peñaloza, referente riojano del bando federal. Sarmiento –en las antípodas de la valoración que había hecho años antes José Hernández– lo tilda directamente de bárbaro. Reconoce que algunos crímenes de su tropa no se le podían endilgar, pero su propósito es mostrarlo como un jefe inculto que iba para donde soplaba el viento, siempre derrotado por propia impericia, siempre provocando desmanes. Se puede ver en este libro, escrito durante la misión diplomática del sanjuanino en Estados Unidos y justo antes de su presidencia, un retrato con momentos de intensidad literaria de lo que para Sarmiento constituía "el bárbaro", coronado por las justificaciones que daba para su eliminación física.-
