Sullivan's Island by Dorothea Benton Frank Book Summary

Set in the steamy, stormy landscape of South Carolina, this New York Times bestseller from the author of Queen Bee is the unforgettable story of one woman’s courageous journey toward truth…

Born and raised on idyllic Sullivan’s Island, Susan Hayes navigated through her turbulent childhood with humor, spunk, and characteristic Southern sass. But years later, she is a conflicted woman with an unfaithful husband, a sometimes resentful teenage daughter, and a heart that aches with painful, poignant memories. And as Susan faces her uncertain future, she realizes that she must go back to her past. To the beachfront house where her sister welcomes her with open arms. To the only place she can truly call home...

Excellent. I thought I had read every book of Doretha Benton Frank, not this one. What a great read. Everyone should have a Livii in their life.

Excellent read! Loved the vivid story telling and Southern island history.. Loved the vivid story and Southern island history!

Too Much “Southern Sass” for me. Maybe I was just not in the mood for this book. Even though I thought the author did a good job telling the story of the dysfunctional family through the years, I just didn’t like them. Having been raised in the south didn’t help a bit either.

Excellent read!. You won’t be disappointed!

Unputdownable‼️. I rarely say this but I could hardly put this book down. There's nothing like a Dorthea Benton Frank book. This was a joy to read.

Sullivan’s Island. Just reread Sullivan’s Island and it was even better than the first time! Everyone please read it….it’ll make you laugh, cry and make you mad…all the ingredients of a perfect book. Trust me!

Meandering!. It wasn’t so bad that I had to put it down, but it also wasn’t so good that I couldn’t put it down.

Great Read. Love this story and well written. The back and forth between the generations was so well done! Powerful!

Loved this book.. Great summer read. Loved everything about this book. One I could not put down. Sad now I’m through trading it. Would love a sequel?

Must be made into a movie!!. Have you ever read a book that the closer you get to the last word the more you wish it would never end? Well this is one of them. If I could make a movie of this book ...I have the whole thing stored in my minds eye. I love Sullivan's Island. The book and the actual entrancing island. I was raised far from there but my heart aches for it when I am not there... This book brings it here to me in an instant..the characters are so real you can feel them. I just finished the book and I miss them all already..you must read this book!

Sullivan's Island. This is the second time I've read this book, and I love it even more than the first time. I absolutely adore any book by Dorthea Benton Frank and read them all. I'm reading them all again. They make you laugh, make you cry, and make you jealous that they aren't your own life. I've been to the Lowcountry several times, and it's true..if you get that sand in your shoes you will want to go back!!

Enjoyable…. Funny, poignant and hopeful. The beautiful descriptions of South Carolina makes want to visit!

Sullivan's Island. I totally enjoyed the read. I wanted more. Susan and Simon.. I wanted more of them. Thanks for the relaxing comforts of the Carolina's. Visited lowcountry many times, almost bought a home in Merrils Inlet... Nina Riggio Hammonton, NJ

An Amazing Read. It just opens and opens and opens up on life, love, thoughts, giving and sharing. I don’t remember when I enjoyed a book so much!

Sullivan's Island. An early Frank novel with a wonderful twist!

A Treasure!. If I wasn't from South Carolina, I'd want to be after reading this gem! There is magic in the low country and it was brought to life here. Can't wait to read the next one, I'm heading to the iTunes store!!

Sullivan' Island. This was my first Dorothea Benton Frank book. I read it after reading several Pat Conroy books. Ms. Frank doesn't have the command of language that Conroy does, but few do. Yet she tells a heartfelt story with wonderful characters that become a part of you. I read the last few chapters with tears in my eyes. What more can you ask for from a Southern writer. If you want a sense of growing up in the South, with all the ghosts and contradictions that continue to haunt us as adults, read this book. You'll laugh as much as you cry, which is also life in the South. Enjoy.

Sullivan's Island. One of the best books I've ever read!

A book that you don’t want to end. One of the vest books I’ve read in years. Easy to read impossible to put down. The story of a family which will both break your heart and fill it with hope for a future in which dreams do come true!

Sullivan’s Island. The first of many great reads.

What a lovely book. This is a keeper that I plan to read again, probably soon. Sullivan’s island is truly one of the main characters in this book & a place I’d love to visit. Sisters, Susan & Maggie, are just what sisters should be. All of the characters, & there are quite a few, are as clearly drawn as if standing before me. Another WONDERFUL book by Dorothea Benton Frank. I can hardly wait to spend time immersed in another of her books.

Sullivan’s Island. Very slow and too much reading, flipped more that half it, too long drawn out story, boring!!!!!

Sullivan's Island. Enchanting. Made me feel so, I don't know, optimistic. Like its ok to dream a little.

Sullivan’s Island. I loved this story of Lowcountry life. The humor in which the author has in abundance is amazing. I don’t think I have laughed so hard reading a book as I did this one. Or as touching. It was truly enjoyable
