11/22/63 (Enhanced Edition) by Stephen King Book Summary

This Enhanced eBook Edition contains a 13-minute film, written and narrated by Stephen King and enhanced with historic footage from CBS News, that will take you back—as King’s novel does—to Kennedy era America.

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? Stephen King’s heart-stoppingly dramatic new novel is about a man who travels back in time to prevent the JFK assassination—a thousand page tour de force.

Following his massively successful novel Under the Dome, King sweeps readers back in time to another moment—a real life moment—when everything went wrong: the JFK assassination. And he introduces readers to a character who has the power to change the course of history.

Jake Epping is a thirty-five-year-old high school English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching adults in the GED program. He receives an essay from one of the students—a gruesome, harrowing first person story about the night 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a hammer. Harry escaped with a smashed leg, as evidenced by his crooked walk.

Not much later, Jake’s friend Al, who runs the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to 1958. He enlists Jake on an insane—and insanely possible—mission to try to prevent the Kennedy assassination. So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson and his new world of Elvis and JFK, of big American cars and sock hops, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake’s life – a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time.

A tribute to a simpler era and a devastating exercise in escalating suspense, 11/22/63 is Stephen King at his epic best.

Great stuff...enjoy. Another King masterpiece.

Blown away. Watched the Hulu series before reading the book. I love the book more. I enjoyed how Mr. King wrote out how they say things in New England and Texas. A great read!

11/22/63. Stephen King continues to amaze his readers with an exceptional ability to create in one's mind the memory of an actual event (sometimes truth is stranger than fiction) coupled with a bizarre, sometimes twisted fictional component that only the KING of mystery/horror can make somehow believable. I find myself speed-reading because I am so anxious to find out what happens next. 💣Blew me away!

11/22/63. Loved this book! Couldn't put it down!

A True Page Turner. As silly as this sounds, 11/22/63 is the only work of Stephen King's I have read (although I'm sure that will soon change). A friend insisted I read it. I have trouble focusing, and long narratives can lose me. But this book was incredible, and the length didn't bother me. In fact, I found myself reading a hundred pages at a time. And like Jake Epping, I was left wishing it could go on forever. Although the Kennedy assassination happened long before I was born (Jake and I were both bicentennial babies, it turns out), I have always been fascinated and horrified by that event and the events leading up to it. Just last month I finally got the opportunity to visit Dallas, and yes, I stopped by the grassy knoll and the former Texas School Book Depository. And Jake was right; there was an eerie feeling about it, even today. The amount of research King had to do to pull this book off is mind-boggling. It makes a PhD program look like a coloring book. The story is so thoughtfully laid out, carefully told, and hypnotically captivating. It has a fascinating premise, relatable characters, and action that keeps you turning the pages. Well done, Mr. King. Very well done!

Amazing Book!. This is one of the finest Stephen King books. It has everything and love the intersections of the other King works.

Loved it!. I’ve never been a real fan to historical fiction, but this is my second favorite book by Stephen King (The Stand being the first). Stephen King does his best to keep it close to the actual timeline of events. His improvisation of times between historical events flows smoothly. It’s not just a story about the JFK assassination but a love story that time can never alter.

11/22/63. Great read! As soon as it starts it's great, gets even better as the book progresses. Hope there could be another book with this character.

11/22/63. This has to be the best book i have read in many years. The mixture of fact and fiction was fascinating. I truly enjoyed this book, I have visited the sites in Dallas and remember the day Pres. Kennedy was assented as if it was yesterday even though it was almost 50 years ago. I remember where I was and what I was doing. This book took me back to a time where terrorists were not on the daily news and a time of innocence that was changed forever on that day, Yes there was bigotry and a nuclear threat but at least we knew who the enemy was. As a kid our parents sheltered the worst from their children. I also remember RFK and the standoff with George Wallace and the beginning of integration. Thanks so much Mr, King for the trip back to those days.

Great. Great characters. Nice to read about places in Maine that are perfectly described. Warm. Fun long book. Feel like I know the characters now.

Who knew..... I had no clue when I picked this up it really was a love story. And one of the best he has ever written. Thank you Steve for the ride.

Possibly King's greatest work so far. It seems that with each new book King comes out with, he shows his maturity as a writer and as a human being. This book is no different and in no way did it disappoint. It is obvious that much research had been done to complete this novel and as I, not even born at the time of the Kennedy assassination, learned a great deal about the 1960's, Kennedy and Oswald. Although to read this book one must remember that it is a novel and not a nonfiction story. If you want that, read one of the books he offers in his post-script. A wonderful telling of a tragic period in American history. Great job as usual Mr. King.

Red read again. One of the besr

Great Read. Not a fan of fiction, but this book was awesome. King did a great job weaving fiction into history. A must read for any history fan or anyone born before 11/22/63.

A must read. I definitely had my issues with the middle and 3rd half of the book, but overall, it was a great ride. Really loved the ending. Looking forward to the Hulu show.

Amazing Read!!. This is honestly one of the best books I have ever read! The book does such a descriptive job, you actually feel like you are back in 1950-60s era early Americana. Mr. King did a massive amount of research, that included everything from exact historical events and timeframes down to the price of a pint of root beer in that time. I could not put the book down and was actually sad when it was over. Please give this book a shot, you will not be disappointed. Brilliant Work by one of the best authors of our time

One of the rare ones. I read at least two books a week, everything from murder mysteries to scientific tomes to biographical histories. Every so often, but not nearly often enough, I happen upon one that I literally can't put down. This is one of them. Stephen King has always created such complex, utterly human characters that his readers easily follow them down, down, down into impossible worlds where they behave like real people would - and we believe all of it. This book is no exception. And the transition in this book from actual history to the supernatural is absolutely seamless. But not painless. I struggled right along with every choice his characters made, and I felt every consequence. Here's how good this book was: if I ever get amnesia the one silver lining will be that I can read this book again for the first time.

Entertaining read. Unlike Mr.King's other books, which tend to be works of wonderful, sometimes gooey fiction, this book was a departure from his usual style. Forced into writing around an actual event, Mr. King comfortably creates several sub-plots, all of which were, in some ways, more enjoyable than the eventual climax in the Texas school book depository. There was plenty of Mr.King's gifted foreshadowing, and the typical building tension narrative, which given this topic was inescapable, but he wrote his main character into being unusually unemotional, which was unnecessary and slightly formulaic. To me, Mr. King's strength as a writer has always been in creating a believable atmosphere, so much so that if you hear a noise in your house as you read his books, you can become quite anxious! So to have the main character so emotionally detached, perhaps intentionally, made the overall story suffer. But from my point of view, this is the only flaw in this book. To me, "Full Dark, no stars" is his best work, and I believe in the conspiracy theories versus the lone gunman narrative that Mr. King justifies in his afterword. Despite these personal differences, I am in awe of Mr. King's attempts in this book and it is very entertaining.

Entertaining and thought provoking. I can't imagine all of the work that King must have poured into this novel - the end result was amazing. I've lost a lot of sleep due to this spell binding novel!

My favorite King novel. I started reading King in the late 80s and have read many of his novels, though not all. For me, this one has been the best one, which is saying a lot. I think I’ve read this one three times. Beautifully written and great telling of a jaw dropper of a story. For me it was less of a horror story and more of one involving supernatural things particularly around time travel. It’s told from the point of view of the narrator — the so-called first-person approach — and that helped reel me in, I think. The Hodges trilogy, for example, is told in the third-person (which I think is right for those stories) but it’s not quite as direct. This is a bit like another king, B.B. King, singing his blues — the story of his life — directly to you.

Book better then mini series. Watched the mini series. I thought I read the book in hopes it would be more detailed. Loved the book more then the mini series. I recommend reading the book over mini series. Watch mini series anyway. James Franco is very good.

11/22/63. One of his best. The research King has done is very impressive. Satisfying ending (I still haven't accepted how The Gunslinger series finished!). Well done.

Captivating story that is impossible to put down!. Being a personal fan of many of King's works and a lover of history, buying this book was a no brainer. This book might seem lengthy, but by the time I got to the end I was wishing it wasn't over. Pick it up! You won't regret it.

Great book!. A must read for time travel fans.

11/22/63 by Steven King. Plods along in spots. But in the end, I anxiously needed to read to the end to see how it turned out.

Perfect use of fiction and nonfiction!. Stephen King really outdoes himself in this JFK assassination conspiracy thriller. Jake Epping/George Amberson is one protagonist that everyone can enjoy. With helpful hints from his "Land of Now" buddy Al Templeton and a rabbit-hole leading to a warm, September 9th day in 1958, Jake is given the opportunity to prevent one of the most tragic events in American History from occurring: The assassination on John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Between King's take on the String Theory and the obdurate past, his intelligence takes us on an unforgettable journey that leaves us asking, "What if?"

Great book. Every once in a while a book comes along that you just don't want it to end. You become part of that world. This book did that for me. I loved King's take on actual events...from an outsider looking in. At first I was bored with what I considered the "b" story in this book...soon enough though I was upset when we would jump back to the Kennedy side of the story. Both were excellent. It really leaves you thinking.

Enjoyable. I'm a history buff and the title naturally caught my attention. I wasn't sure what to expect. I felt like I was reading a script for the TV show "Quantam Leap," which I didn't mind. The love story was also unexpected but not bad. I enjoyed the video commentary that came with the Enhanced Edition. Overall, I'm glad I chose to read this book and I'm looking forward to a book club discussion about it to see what others thought of it... (I'll brag about suggesting this book to my group here.) :)

Best book ever. The title says it all. This is the greatest book I've ever read in my life. I started this book in the summer of '14. All 31 chapters were insane. I'll likely never read a book that's better than this. Stephen King is the master.

Reindeerdippin. Have not read/heard this yet but ANYTHING by Stephen King has always been 4-5 stars for me; epically THE STAND, THE DARK TOWER SERIOUS, IT, etc. My number ONE FAVORITE AUTHOR!

112263. Great book, kept wanting to know what was going on. I still wonder what Jake is doin. Read this.

Good story-telling. Great story from Stephen King. Reads like a movie waiting to be made, but King makes some interesting statements about human nature. Probably not for those looking to get into the theories of time travel, though there's a few interesting points about that as well.

Loved it. This book was great. I couldn't put it down. Stephen King is my favorite author and this book is now one of my favorite books.

11/22/62. Im a big fan of Stephen King,I've read all his books and have seen all his movies. In my opinion this book is His best. It's so different than all the books written by him and once you start reading it takes you away. When Jake goes back in time and ends up in Texas in the early 60's,you actually think your right there at that time in history, you actually can see it in your mind! This book I feel should be made into a movie, even though it's a novel.I really wish someone at Hollywood would cocider making this into a movie and if it's done right I believe that all Stephen King Fans would say it's the best film ever done out of all His films. So come on Hollywood give it a go and make us all happy and make 11/22/62 into a MOVIE!!!!!

Excellent. A most excellent and enjoyable read. I totally agree with Mr. King on how utterly cruel many Americans are, all we've been through as a country and a people and we still have so many ignorant and just mean spirited people here. Practically all of American citizens struggle to pay the bills and I see most people ignoring this as if they live in a fantasy land that honestly think that they are wealthy or middle class, I believe there is no middle class, you are either wealthy or not and the majority of our citizens are not, so why would you support people who only hurt our people for their own greed and start wars for the same reason, greed. We need to look out for each other. To do anything less is un-american and the republican party and tea party people are nothing less than traitorous to us all and our country. Many need a wake-up call, most are oblivious to anything being wrong and support the people who hurt us and our country the most and to me that is the scariest thing of all.

Great novel!. Fantastic story! Wonderful mix of fiction and nonfiction. A love story at its core.

Amazing. Really top drawer!

11/22/63. I really like this book. I've been reading Stephen King for many years starting with Christine whenever that came out. I've read quite a few of his books including all of the Dark Tower books. I've enjoyed most of his books but I like some better than others. This one I'd put near the top. It was a fast read and hard to put down. I highly recommend it.

11/22/63. I'm a fan of historical fiction and of Stephen King. He's in great form here. Surprisingly moving.

Greatness. Best book I have read

One of my favorite books of all time.. I was grabbed from the beginning. I could not put it down and was sad at the end, not because of the story but because I was finished. I am going to read it again which I never do!

11-22-63. The book was way too long. It would ramble on about this and that and barely staying on course. Terrible read.

Delia Bilbrey. As usual, Mr. King pulled me into his story at the first word and didn't let me go until the last! Or should I say the last word he spoke in the short film at the end of the e-book? I was13 and sitting in Sister Mary Thomas Moores' 8th grade classroom when we heard of President Kennedys assassination. I have vivid memories of the week following but not of the facts surrounding the weeks before. Thank you sir, not only for 11/23/63 but for All of your stories that have left me sleeping with the light on because I couldn't put the book down, or because I was too afraid to!

A very good read!. A very good read!

Amazing!. What a great book! Once I started it I could not put it down! It did seem to go by slowly but it is all worth the build up! This was the first bookie read by Steven king and I am glad to say that I was not disappointed

11/22/63. Compelling and likable characters! Awesome story!

One of his best !!!. I've been a long time fan and although this doesn't seem like his "usual" stuff it was great. I couldn't put it down at times and was happy about that. Great premise, great story and great characters. Save a long weekend to get through it all, it is well worth it!

Wonderful read!. Great characters, loved traveling back in time to that era. However, I disagree with the author's viewpoint on Oswald. Opposing viewpoints are what makes the world go 'round 😊 SR

11/22/63. This was a fantastic book. Well written. Riveting. It's somewhat long but it was very hard to put down. Blending fiction with history was so interesting. It added to the reality which was fun, since 'buying' time travel can be 'iffy.' Not so with this book. I bought into it. I felt all the emotions: the draw to the innocence of the past, along with the ugliness, the frustrations, the moral dilemmas, the desire to control, yet the frustration of not being able to, or not even being sure it was right....or even if it would help, down the road. I would recommend this book to everyone. It's one I won't soon forget.

AMAZING!!!!. It has been awhile since I picked up a Stephen King book, but after reading this, I have no idea why it's been so long! This is truly one of the best books I have read in years (and I read ALOT)! If you are a fan of history, sci-fi, suspense, or romance, then this is a MUST read for you!

Good Read. Great Book. Keeps you thinking throughout.

Very good.. Another hit by King. I've read virtually every novel he's written and this is one is as good as any. I couldn't put it down. I'm not interested in his historical accuracy or lack thereof, I was entertained from page 1 to the end and that's all that matters to me. Don't keep us waiting too long for your next, Mr. King. -- Kev

11/22/63. Riveting story! Could not put it down (or turn it off, since it is an eBook!) I was 10 years old when it happened, so it was wonderful to "go back into my own time". Thanks

11.22.63. A real great read couldn’t put it down. Another great job by .Mr King

Great be King story. Like a lot of his books there are parts where the details get to be a bit much but still a great book right to the last one.

Wow. Every few years I read a book that stays with me. This is one of those books. Words that weave a story that you not only read but you feel. The pity of a book like this is when you read the last page and you know it is done and then you wait. You wait for a few years until that next book grips your soul like this one did. This was the first time I have read Stephen King. Loved every page.

11/22/63. This book was a great read . I enjoyed many of the plot twists and the love story . I’d definitely recommend this book
