Wherever I Wind Up by R.A. Dickey & Wayne Coffey Book Summary

The perfect gift for baseball fans, now with a new epilogue by author R.A. Dickey, winner of the 2012 Cy Young award.

"An astounding memoir—haunting and touching, courageous and wise."—Jeremy Schaap, bestselling author, Emmy award-winning journalist, ESPN

In 1996, R.A. Dickey was the Texas Rangers’ much-heralded No. 1 draft choice. Then, a routine physical revealed that his right elbow was missing its ulnar collateral ligament, and his lifelong dream—along with his $810,000 signing bonus—was ripped away. Yet, despite twice being consigned to baseball’s scrap heap, Dickey battled back. Sustained by his Christian faith, the love of his wife and children, and a relentless quest for self-awareness, Dickey is now the starting pitcher for the Toronoto Blue Jays (he was previously a star pitcher for the New York Mets) and one of the National League’s premier players, as well as the winner of the 2012 Cy Young award.

In Wherever I Wind Up, Dickey eloquently shares his quintessentially American tale of overcoming extraordinary odds to achieve a game, a career, and a life unlike any other.

Incredible read. Incredibly written and makes you so happy to know the story

Great. Dickey is the man

Utter Crap. If you like proselytizing (more pages on Jesus than on baseball), hypocrisy (I live a christian life -whoops, cheated on my wife), and just flat out lying ("I failed a drug test b/c I ate too much chicken casserole with poppy seeds) then this tripe is for you. So little discussion of how he approaches individual hitters, the mechanics of the game or his unique pitch that it doesn't merit discussion as a baseball book. The personal pieces are thin and uninteresting. To claim this is one of the best sports books ever is just a joke. Compared to Hank Aaron's "I Had A Hammer" or "Season on The Brink" is criminal.

Good insight. As a avid Mets fan I was excited to open this book up. After reading the first chapter it did not disappoint. Dickey has great introspection that you believe that he has put his soul in the pages without hiding anything. It is great insight to the mental anguish a journeyman pitcher is feeling through the rough years. I would easily read the story that comes out of Dickeys second half career as I am sure it would contain similar stories that would humanize the gem and it's players.

I highly recommend it.. If you ever wanted to know the trials and tribulations of a minor leaguer, this is your book. Kudos to RA for also sharng his inner most demons. I'm quite sure it wasn't easy....... Let's go Mets!!!!

A Perfect Game.... A perfect home run, just perfect, congratulations...

Inspiring. A fine piece of writing by an admirable athlete and a better human being. Read it in 2 days.

Amazing. Not only is the book a great one for baseball fan, but it's entertaining and gives you insight on a man who lost himself and recovered by the grace of God! LOVE IT!!

Great Story. I just finished reading this book. The story of conquering your greatest fears is what gripped me.

A Great Story. Story just tells you that if you have a will to succeed no matter what happens you could do it..

Great read!. Great book sharing R.A's troubled childhood and journey to the big leagues.

Wherever I Wind Up. Excellent life story, I loved reading this book! I love my Cardinals and I wish your were a Cardinal, but I will watch you and cheer for you anyway!!! Many Blessings to you and your family!!! Inspirational!

Rough Road. Dickey still has a rough road ahead. The story is good and his faith is explained well. I guess this is a self help story if you are looking for someone who has been through it. Baseball is secondary.

Enjoyable Book. I am not an avid reader. Baseball has never been a sport that interested me. However, R.A. Dickey's book is so honest and heart warming in so many ways. I believe that most people don't have rosy lives, including myself. I have always wanted to write a book about a very dark time in my life. The point would be to share how with hard work you can turn any dark time around. R. A. Said all that I wanted to say. Congratulations from me and a huge amount of gratitude to you for being so open and honest. I can't stop recommending this book to all of my friends!! J

Amazin'. R.A. Becomes your friend over the pages that you read. Such a like able guy. Good luck RA.

Impressive. A lot more than a baseball book. A great life story that that brings you in to the thinking of a man caught in a world he has little control of, but succeeds in most every step- especially in entertaining the reader!

Inspiring is an understatement. I really don't read much so the fact that I read this book in less than 3 days really reflects how much I liked it. I gained an even greater respect for R.A. after learning all that he's gone through. This book has truly inspired me and I think I am a better person just for having read it. He's a great pitcher but an even better person. With that in mind, I wish him much success both on and off the field.

Awesomeness. This book inspired and encouraged me. A book well worth the time.

Great read!. I am a big Rangers fan and loved the inside information about his pitch and ins and outs of the hard baseball life. To me it was just enough description of individual games and batters he faced mixed with his personal struggles. Read many excerpts aloud to my husband. I am definitely rooting for RA to have continued success in his baseball career and life. Very easy to root for the guy after reading this great book.

Amazing!!!!!. It's such a touching and inspiring book. R.A Dickey is one of my idols, and this book really gives me hope. It's a great tear jerker at times and others you will be giggling and laughing.

A Must Read. Coming into this book, I could honestly say that I diddnt have high hopes. But the way R.A. Dickey talks about his past makes everybody look at him now and say, "he has come a long way"

Amazing read. I've been a fan of Dickey's for the past few years, after reading his story I've become a fan of him as a person, his transparency and experiences are something everyone should hear.

Really wonderful!. If you're expecting a great book on baseball, you'll get it with "Wherever I Wind Up." you'll also get really wonderful book on life!

Best read. Great book

Wow!!. A great story about life, baseball and remarkable inner strength ! A true picture of what it takes to be on the mound and what you need to stay there !!!

Wherever I Wind Up. I have the book pre-ordered so this is premature but given the excerpt I read this morning I can't believe this will be anything but fantastic. Over the years interviews with baseball players have gotten more and more plastic, managed, sterile..... ie boring to the point of being completely uninteresting almost as if every agent has a master list of buzz words that every major league player must stick to in order to maximize their own commercial opportunities. There are a few exceptions - RA Dickey being the most obvious in the New York area. For those of you who read this review - please understand - if you read this book you will not be reading a typical, boring, myopic baseball star's self reflections. Ultimately my gut tells me this book will be a story of one man's journey through life (and baseball) that will ultimately be compared to other well written memoirs as opposed to a "baseball book".

God on your side. This book shows that God will not give you anything you can't handle. R.A. shows that in this book and his faith in God has made me look back at myself, as an athlete and a person, and work on rekindling my faith so that I can be as strong as a Christian as he is. God bless.

Wherever I Wind Up. Not what I expected. A brave man and a story about not settling on who you are but developing who you can be. To go through so much and be able to share takes strength no man possesses without God!

What an amazing story. Highly recommended. This is the story of a real life underdog that gave it his all through thick and thin.

R. A. Dickey. A man to root for -- took the long, hard road to the top.

Worth it. Let me start off by stating that I am NOT a Mets fan in any way shape or form. I really enjoyed Dickey's insightful and heartfelt book. A very honest account of what a 'Journeyman' player goes through in their career. Absolutely worth reading. Good job RA

Sensational. I wish I had time to say more. This book is fantastic. I do not read much but I could not put this book down. It is inspiring and his faith in God is encouraging as any! I wish I could personally thank R A and tell him how much this book has done to make my faith grow. Oh, plus some wonderful insight to the life of a ball player.

Wherever I wind up. Wow, RA is such an inspiration! I don't get to read much, but after seeing RA on TV I bought his book. I couldn't put it down. Would make a great movie.

Favorite book in a long time. An excellent read on so many levels. Well done, R.A. "Wherever I Wind Up" was the perfect marriage of faith, baseball and a man's struggle to find true peace. As a fellow believer and lifelong fan of the game, I salute you and praise God that He led you to share this story of redemption.

Amazing. I bought this book in hopes to learn more about throwing a Knuckleball. It was a very shocking, yet gripping life story. 👍👍

Refreshing and the best I've ever read. It's refreshing to read something so smooth and life like. I wish Dickey much more success (even as a phillies fan) and encourage him to continue writing! I would be happy to purchase anything he has written. This book has made me think of how life can be so much easier if we just love those around us and let people in. This is by far the best book I've ever read and even tough that number is not that high I still give all the credit to anyone who was involved in this wonderful piece of writing. Thanks RA for telling me your story! Andrew Reagle

Great Book!. I was touched by the never give up attitude RA shows throughout this book. Amazing story of perseverance, courage, and faith. His life had as many twists and turns as his knuckleball. Thanks, RA, for being a good example. Stacey McInnis

Inspirational. What an inspirational story of faith and prayer! Wounded Heart in real life. RA is next to Josh Hamilton as my two favorite players. I purchased MLB.TV premium just to follow RA and the Mets.

Wherever I wind up by RA Dickey. I read this book because I love baseball--as in RABIDLY love baseball. I am stunned by this book because of its raw, honest, human truths that resonate. RA Dickey is an amazingly honest and talented writer. He pulls you into his world, both good and bad moments, and you feel like you are on the journey--rooting from the stands, feeling his life-changing events and choices. You learn about transformation and the knuckleballer. You learn about resilience. You want to buy his jersey!!!! Thank you, RA, for sharing your story. You have a new fan in me. Keep writing! I'm recommending your book to everyone, including those who know nothing about baseball.

My new hero. What an incredible story.

R.A. Dickey. This book is extremely well written by Dickey. It very well might be the best book I have ever read. I would definitely recommend it. Great book.

R.A. Dickey review. Awesome. R.A. Dickey opens up on every aspect of his life in the midst of his career and in the midst of not having everything solved or figured out. I have never chosen a professional athlete as one of my heroes, but I would definitely add R.A. to my short list. He is a baseball player striving to overcome the challenges of making it in the majors with a knuckleball as his primary pitch but bigger yet striving to grow as a husband, father and son and he brings so much inspiration in his journey. Thanks R.A.

Excellent. Very good read and extremely inspirational.

Well written and courageous. When we hear of the exorbitant salaries paid to actors, rock stars, top athletes and other celebrities, we may lack sympathy when their personal life becomes chaotic. We have come to expect personal disfunction as part of the course and it is possible that we dismiss their struggles as self-inflicted. Along comes R.A. Dickey and in attempting to master his knuckleball pitch must confront his past. Bad things have happened in his childhood and he must overcome the affects of these or go nowhere in his life. This is a story of courage and uncompromising persistence. Despite undeniably great talent, he seemed destined to alternate indefinitely between the major and minor leagues before becoming too old to play in either. He realises that the success of his professional life is inextricably linked to the success of his personal life. This is his epiphany. It is refreshing when anyone highly successful in the sporting field is so articulate on the written page. The subtitle for the book is “my quest for truth, authenticity, and the perfect knucklball.” There is humour in this but it effectively summarises the author’s priorities in life. Clearly it has application to anyone who has grown up with some dysfunction in their formative years and this touching story is an inspiration that will bring hope to many.

Amazing. What a great read and not only an honest look into the trials and joys of a Major League pitcher, but a glimpse into the relationships of ball players in general. Simply amazing.

Inspirational!. What a great read! This man has gone through so much over the course of his career and to see where he's at now is truly inspirational. A must read for any baseball enthusiast.

Great book. I started reading this book because of my interest in baseball, but I also ended up stumbling upon something very inspiring. I found it to be very honest to the struggles of mankind, and something that was very encouraging to my faith, and to my passion to succeed in the everyday struggles of life. Great work, RA and I look forward to your 2013 season with the blue jays.

Wherever I Wind Up. Loved it! Can't wait to see you pitch for my beloved Blue Jays. May God be with you always!

Great. Great story, knowing about his Cy young win is the cherry on top of this story. Quite a journey, worth it!
