The End of Normal by Stephanie Madoff Mack Book Summary

A New York Times bestseller, The End of Normal is the explosive and heartbreaking memoir from the widow of Mark Madoff and the daughter-in-law of Bernard Madoff.

When the news of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme broke, no one was more shocked than the members of his own family. Before then, Madoff’s son, Mark, and daughter- in-law, Stephanie, had built an idyllic life. Yet, while Mark’s thriving business was entirely separate from his father’s now notorious fund, he and Stephanie found themselves in the eye of the storm—and grappling with their own sense of betrayal. Mark refused to see or speak to his parents, and on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest, he hanged himself.

Left to raise her children as a single mother, Stephanie tells the real story of her marriage to Mark, of being a part of the Madoff family, and of life for two years following her father-in-law’s arrest and incarceration. The End of Normal is a searing inside look at one of the most controversial stories of our time, and an extraordinary memoir of surviving personal tragedy amid public scandal.

Great read!. Surprisingly wonderful. This book is both uplifting and emotional. A rise through the ashes and a must read.

Great read.. Best book I read in a long time. Good for her keeping it together.

The End of Normal. This book was very moving. Stephanie Madoff Mack made it feel as though I was part of the family. It is such a sad story. I wish I could bring back Mark for her and her children. It is just a shame that he saw no othe solution. Once I started reading her story, I could not put this book down. I hope that in a few years she continues her story so that we can read that her and her children are doing well!

Authentic, warm, scary, heartfelt, painful and full of love.. This book truly shares the deepest hurts and loves a family could ever go through. This book is very well written and I couldn't wait to read it each evening. Stephanie seems to be a very strong loving person. I wish you the best Stephanie, Audrey and Nick.

Very well written. Definitely recommend. Well written story with a lot of insight into what really happened.

The End of Normal. This was an excellent read. Sad that a young family has to move on without a Dad and sadder that so many were victimized by Bernie Madoff. Of course there are always two sides to every story and Stephanie eloquently articulates the facts as she sees them. I'm sure that the story would be drastically different coming from the perspective of anyone else involved in this tragedy. There was one theme that ran throughout the whole book that I found intriguing --- the sense of entitlement everyone in this tragedy had. Though the sons may not have been involved in the scheme, they certainly benefitted from it and led a life of privilege that extended to everyone in their immediate circle. Yet they showed no real concern about the people who had funded that lifestyle; no remorse. They seem to want sympathy yet have no empathy. They still have the comforts of wealth while others were left penniless. All the same, this was a very interesting book and I would recommend it to others to draw their own conclusions.

Poignant. Loved her side of the story. Raw and real. I felt every emotion.

Sad & touching. I loved Stephanie's story, it was so sad how their marriage ended though. I didn't want the book to end, I couldn't put her story down. I don't think it mattered about the vacations & other homes, that was how they grew up & what they knew. I would read this book again!! I'm still in shocked about Andy, his girlfriend & Ruth. I can't believe how ugly Andy was to his brother's wife & kids. I hope she can one day not awake in terror and sadness. She's a brave woman.

We pray for Ruth. Cruel, selfish and not at all able to understand the loyalty of a wife who loved her husband. Temper tantrums obviously didn't help Mark did it?

The End Of Normal. I couldn't put it down. Done beautifully. Loved the pictures. Sad to say I had never even heard of this story before I found the book. Too much for one family to handle.

Great read!. This book was amazing yet incredibly tragic. It took me on an emotional roller coaster. Stephanie is an amazing woman with a lot of courage, bravery and compassion. I feel for this family as they have gone through way more hardship than anyone should ever endure. This book was so good I feel attached to her in some way. I recommend it for a good read.

The end of normal. What a great book, my heart breaks for Stephanie madoff and her family.

So well done.. I did not know what to expect when I started this book. And I never expected what I got. This book reveals feelings, emotions, and situations that are warm, dark, endearing, unfathomable, and torturing yet it inspires the reader as it teaches love, pain, commitment, and endurance. So well written, it is as if we are sitting on the couch talking, as you recount your past experiences. With all of the pain and heartbreak, I thank you for sharing your truths. I love this book. I was sad when I finished it as I feel like we are quiet friends. I wish you calm waters ahead.

Wow. This book is stunningly surprising and very well written. I didn't follow too much of the story of Bernie when the story first broke, but it was also impossible not to know enough about it without actually doing research since the media had covered every second they could. This book almost makes it hard to believe that this was actually someone's REAL LIFE and had to live through many heartbreaking moments with many more to come. I wanted to believe this book was fiction, however, I was brought back to the sad reality that it wasn't when the family photos were shown at the end. My heart goes out to Stephanie and her family and really do wish her the best in years to come. As for Andy, Ruth, and Bernie, I am baffled with what to say. Although Andy seems to try with Stephanie, it also seems that he is still a very troubled man with lack of emotion...genes obviously derived from his father. As for Ruth, although the wedding vows are "until death do us part", I think it is safe to say that although there hasn't been a physical death, it is safe to say that there has been a death metaphorically and it's time to move on. The man had betrayed you for all this years and ultimately ended up being the major cause of the rift in your family. Do your family some justice and cut your ties, he is worthless...literally. Stephanie, I wish you the best and keep moving forward- that's all you can do now.

The End of Normal. What a beautiful tribute Stephanie of your love and heartache. My heart goes out to you and I am so glad you wrote this. I too would have never known what the families went through and the cruelty of people. Love and blessings to you and Audrey and Nick.

Amazing. Wow this book is written well. I am amazed that Stephanie has held in together as well as she has. I couldn’t hardly put this book down. All I can really say is Amazing.

Kept me intrigued. I liked this book and it really kept me intrigued until the end. I do hope there will be more about Stephanie Madoff and her life as it continues. I hope she keeps us updated. I do feel that she tried to be honest in her assessment of the Madoff crises and her and her husbands unfortunate and sad entanglement in it. I do hope she finds forgiveness in her heart for those who hurt her. It will help her heal.

The end of normal. I am one of those people that don't take crimes of money wealth and power serious because I grew up from very young with the thought that money is the root to all evil however this book has not only changed my mindset but has also softened my heart. As a mother to 4 children 2 which were babies when their father was sent to prison although not the same as death to me at that time and going through those years alone without him felt like a death sentence. My heart aches for all the loss this family has seen and will see.May God bless you and watch over you.I found this book at the right time and I would only hope that your story will help others heal and all your suffering isn't ever taken in vein.

Th End of Normal. Truly an inspiring book. Thoroughly enjoyed reading Stephanie 's perspective and her struggle to maintain her family through all the turmoil she endured.

A Must Read. Literally read this over a 32 hour span. Such a page turner. Her strength and raw honestly is apparent on every page. Her and Nicks love story was my favorite part. A must read memoir.

A heartbreaking look at the damage Madoff wrought on his family.... I was extremely interested in reading about the damage Madoff wrought on his own family. What I ended up with is one of the most courageous, heartbreaking, extraordinary books I've read in some time. Some reviewers have obvious bias against anyone with the last name Madoff, but pay those reviews no kind. Life is far more complex than that. Obviously, his son Mark paid the ultimate price for Madoff's wrongdoings...beautifully written and very insightful, highly recommended.

Great book. I really didn't know too much about the Madoffs family except for what was published in the media! I knew that Bernie Madoff committed one of the worst crimes in the history by stealing billions of dollars from his friends, family, business associates, etc! Stephanie Madoff's book allows us a in depth look into how his family tried to deal with his crime! This is a sad and heartwarming story about how one woman dealt with this tragic loss of her husband and how she still deals with carrying the Madoff name!

Interesting. Good Read! You can feel her pain. More than anything a brave woman.

The End of Normal. Makes you think about life...

The End of Normal. Very raw, thoughtful, abs cathartic

Good read, but.... I find it difficult to sympathize with the author. She is childish and immature and doesn't grasp the suffering of others.

Wonderful. An incredibly moving book, wonderfully written. I pray for Stephanie and her children.

Moving book. I can only imagine losing my best friend, my husband. I too would struggle to find my way back to a "normal" life. The anger and the hurt that those left behind feel after a loved one has committed suicide is beyond my comprehension. I pray that I never have to experience that loss, rather it be my children or my spouse, or anyone that I love and care about it...but if I do, may I handle it with the grace and conviction to go on with life as Stephanie has. I wish nothing but the best for her and life as she knows it now.

Not really that exciting. Slow read. No real revalations. I’m not sure I would recommend this book unless you have some obsession with the maddoffs?

Really?!?. Not sure why I bought this. Really should have been written, bound and given to family members and not put out there for others to read. It's hard to dislike the author but at the same time hard to like her. Don't get me wrong, she is an innocent in this mess, just comes across as self absorbed and desperately needs to grow up.

Very good. My heartbreaks for Steph and the children. I am so happy she wrote this book and it clearly shows what a front sometimes people have to put on. The most important thing is for Steph to stay as strong as she can and continuing doing the good job she is doing. Much love to you Steph and the children. Mindy Holt

Read it for what it’s worth…a glossy piece of bull$hit. I’m sure she rushed to have her version of events published less than 9 months after her husband’s suicide in order to beat the rest of the Madoff family to the punch with the actual story. Yes, read it so that you can get one victim’s unsubstantiated, one-sided account of events that lead to her husband’s suicide. Although my heart goes out to Mark Madoff’s children since they are the only true victims, I found that Ms. Mack seems to have run out of fingers to point at all the evil people who are responsible for her husband’s suicide. Her narcissistic story, riddled with her holier-than-thou virtrues, fails to have her look in the mirror at the sole person who could have saved her husband. Her numerous written accounts of his glaring signs that he was obviously suffering from a major depressive disorder and needed medical attention were seen by her that she was being ignored. A good quick read but this book leaves you with more questions giving it’s glaring holes such as: who leaves someone who attempted suicide in the past alone with an infant? who turns off their phone after screaming at a person who has had suicidal tendencies? Why did both of his suicide attempts immediately follow an arguement with his wife? All of these lead me to believe that, again, this is one person’s attempt to point the finger at someone else before they point it at the true catalyst in Mark Madoff’s demise…I realize that he’s the one that actually pulled the proverbial trigger but she has to take responsibilty for being the one who put proverbial gun in his hand then pretty much said, “Shoot”.

Very interesting. Feel bad for them and what she had to go through because of her father-in-law.

The End of Normal. A pity party book.

Loved it!!. Very good book!!! It brought tears to my eyes.

Enthralling read. highly recommended--dubious at first it would be Upper Class White Women Lament about the loss of her summer homes, expensive jewelry, and designer clothes, Ms. Madoff-Mack's book showed me that my assumptions were 100% wrong. this is a moving, poetic, sincere chronicle of a family, marred by an unimaginable, monumental betrayal (and hundreds of smaller ones along the way and afterward). I read it in a day and a half and wished I could follow the author on as she persevered, missing her narrative and personality.

The End of Normal. Loved the book. I could feel Stephanie's pain. Did not want the book to end. Loved the pictures at the end. Sweet family.

A survivor's story. Gripping and tragic. A journey into a rarified world of privilege and collapse but props to the author for surviving to tell the story.

Depressing. Good book but depressing (which makes sense given the subject). Wish her well....hopefully all her anger won't bury her first.

The New Normal. This was recommended for our book club, and even though I already knew the tragic outcome, I found myself hoping that this story was going to have a different ending. My heart breaks for this family and I wish Stephanie all the best in her continued quest to be a voice for her beloved husband and her beautiful children and most importantly, for her "optic"-free self.

Sad story. Glad I read it. The extend of Bernie's damage is beyond words

A great read. I remember when this happened but found myself enveloped in the story. I couldn't put it down...it was well written but knowing its non-fiction, I felt sorry for Stephanie and the children..then after seeing their pictures, what a beautiful family they had before the tragedy. They are still beautiful but the story tale ending was sadly ended way too early. My thoughts and prayers go to this family.

The end of normal. Terrible Book. Very self centered people and family. I wasted my money on this and ended up contributing money to their selfish lifestyle.

The End of Normal. I really enjoyed the book . Such a nice story about a family who ran into a lot of problems beyond their control .

The End of Normal. Written with the objectivity you would expect from a third person. Deeply touched.

Incredibly Moving. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I came for the scandal and found myself getting emotional several times throughout. Having listened to a loved one, I could relate to a lot of what she goes through. I highly recommend this book and I hope the author is happy wherever she is.

Like sitting with a friend. Reading this book was like sitting with a good friend and having a conversation with her about her life. The ups and the downs are all laid out with extraordinary feeling and emotion. Her life, her children's lives, grandparents, step children, family and friends lives are all intertwined during some of the most incredible and darkest days a person can go through. This is a great read and you will find yourself completely emerged not wanting to put it down.

The End of Normal. This is a moving, eloquently written story. Its about a woman's life that was shattered to pieces by a horrible person who hurt a lot of people. His son, the authors husband, Mark couldn't live with all the pain his father caused everyone especially his wife and children. I won't rewrite the book for you but I could keep talking about it forever. As a widow myself, I feel her pain. It's a tremendous pain that she, like all us widows, bravely endure daily! This book makes you want to wish them the very best in her new life for her young family and the strength to get thru each new day in an unplanned and uncharted journey. Best wishes Stephanie!

You Never Were Normal. Good read but to call her whole life even before Madoff NORMAL is disingenuous...I hope she learns to appreciate how great her life really is. Good read but it didn't leave me feeling good.

The truths, The pain, The feelings. Although I remember the Bernie Madoff debacle, the shock and the news stories, reading this book gave me a whole new understanding & meaning to the horror of it all. Everyone heard of the thousands hurt by what he did but, reading what his loved ones endured makes it more heart-breaking.

Wow. I saw the interview Stephanie gave, and knew I had To read her book, I haven't been able to put it down, I have told everyone I know to read it, I don't know her but feel like I do, I feel so much for her, I to wish people could understand everyone in the world should be put in a situation to understand what people are sometimes going through. I pray for her to always find the strength G-D has given her, and all I can say is that the Madoffs are damn lucky to have someone like Stephanie enter their lives. I just cannot believe what this person has been through, and still keeping in mind there was still Someone else that had to be taken care of before herself. I only hope that one day when I'm in NYC I can run into her to let her know in person that there are people who do believe in her and her husband, I am sure she has her guardian angel watching over them. Hope you find the peace your looking for.

Stephanie. First I want to say to Stephanie, you are my hero. You are a very strong woman. You stood my your husband right to the end. God bless you and your darling children. To Andy, you are a self centered idiot. You were not there for your only brother, when he needed you. To Ruth, never should you be able to refer to yourself as a mother or a grandmother. You deserted your son when he needed you the most. I hope you get everything you deserve. To Bernie, WHY????? Why would you put your whole family in such an ugly, awful nightmare. Just how many lives did you live? How could you steal from friends, family and strangers who trusted you? You were the devil in disguise. Stephanie, Audrey and Nick always remember your Daddy and he will be with you always in your heart. LIVE, LOVE & LAUGH

Truly touching.. An honest and beautifully written memoir of such a difficult time. I could of put it down.

The end of normal. This was a great read! I hope This beautiful family can finally have peace in the aftermath of B.M.
