Fresh Off the Boat by Eddie Huang Book Summary

NOW AN ORIGINAL SERIES ON ABC • “Just may be the best new comedy of [the year] . . . based on restaurateur Eddie Huang’s memoir of the same name . . . [a] classic fresh-out-of-water comedy.”—People

“Bawdy and frequently hilarious . . . a surprisingly sophisticated memoir about race and assimilation in America . . . as much James Baldwin and Jay-Z as Amy Tan . . . rowdy [and] vital . . . It’s a book about fitting in by not fitting in at all.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS

Assimilating ain’t easy. Eddie Huang was raised by a wild family of FOB (“fresh off the boat”) immigrants—his father a cocksure restaurateur with a dark past back in Taiwan, his mother a fierce protector and constant threat. Young Eddie tried his hand at everything mainstream America threw his way, from white Jesus to macaroni and cheese, but finally found his home as leader of a rainbow coalition of lost boys up to no good: skate punks, dealers, hip-hop junkies, and sneaker freaks. This is the story of a Chinese-American kid in a could-be-anywhere cul-de-sac blazing his way through America’s deviant subcultures, trying to find himself, ten thousand miles from his legacy and anchored only by his conflicted love for his family and his passion for food. Funny, moving, and stylistically inventive, Fresh Off the Boat is more than a radical reimagining of the immigrant memoir—it’s the exhilarating story of every American outsider who finds his destiny in the margins.

Praise for Fresh Off the Boat

“Brash and funny . . . outrageous, courageous, moving, ironic and true.”—New York Times Book Review

“Mercilessly funny and provocative, Fresh Off the Boat is also a serious piece of work. Eddie Huang is hunting nothing less than Big Game here. He does everything with style.”—Anthony Bourdain

“Uproariously funny . . . emotionally honest.”—Chicago Tribune

“Huang is a fearless raconteur. [His] writing is at once hilarious and provocative; his incisive wit pulls through like a perfect plate of dan dan noodles.”—Interview

“Although writing a memoir is an audacious act for a thirty-year-old, it is not nearly as audacious as some of the things Huang did and survived even earlier. . . . Whatever he ends up doing, you can be sure it won’t look or sound like anything that’s come before. A single, kinetic passage from Fresh Off the Boat . . . is all you need to get that straight.”—Bookforum

Fresh off the Boat. Now I know more about Taiwanese and Chinese, food and culture. I enjoyed the book even when there were times I needed an interpreter. Would I recommend it to the casual reader? No, we'd have to have a long discussion about the book first!

Amazing. Definitely a great read. The show is hood also. Would be better if the corporations let Eddie have full creative control. We NEED more minorities telling our own stories.

Hendonation Worldwide. I really enjoyed this book probably because I'm Chinese and root for the underdogs and late bloomers. Eddie really knows how to describe food in a way that I have never read before especially when it comes to Asian food. I am also glad that I bought this as an ebook because I found myself looking up words because this chinaman seems to be well read. I found myself laughing a great deal reading this on my phone while waiting for food and at times I did also feel like Eddie was a privileged rich kid that tried too hard to push a hard line. Regardless I'm happy that one of us made it. I have never been to New York and want to go there even more now. #lakersalldayeventhoughmambahurt I wonder what he's gonna do next. HNDNTN

Dissappointing. Disappointing.

Changing of the guard. It's truly great to start to see all the fringe experiences people like Eddie and myself had while navigating through American society be shared and recognized with the larger culture. Always seeing the world from the outside and battling with yourself to compromise or not in order to make the American life easier is a struggle that still goes on with most of us. It's almost full justification for my choices to see Eddie doing his thing and not bending to the "proper" expectations of being a model minority by doing what the dominant culture sees as right. Excited to see more of this stuff play out as we all grow and start "getting ours". Hopefully before I die we will be able to not have to start a conversation justifying how we got here and explaining the Asian-American experience and just be. A great book with real stories that I only imagined were limited to conversation with the homies. So if you don't know, now you know.

Skilled Writer. I saw this kid on Tony Bourdain's show. Didn't realize it was the same person until I was 200 pages in. I grew up in Orlando, haunted the same places mentioned. Laughed uncontrollably at his quips. READ THIS BOOK, he is an even better writer than a chef. The world needs more inventive multitalented thinkers like Eddie.

Interesting view of life. Wasn't what I expected, but I appreciated the opportunity to look at the American dream from a different perspective.

Fresh off the boat. Not what I expected, some parts were better than others, but I’m glad I finished, son.

A Must-Read!. Vivid writing, moving stories, full of deep human truths. I actually like the audiobook better, because it's in Eddie's own voice. Please keep in mind that this is a memoir rich with pain and triumph, not a humor book. I can't understand why they chose to attempt to turn this moving book into a comedy. It might have made a good drama, if Huang had been given full creative control. As it is, as much as I recommend the book, I suggest avoiding the series, which leeches the authenticity out of Eddie Huang's unforgettable story.

Mind altering. Witty and relatable, it's amazing that a 32 year old puerto rican female raised in NY has so much in common with a Taiwanese raised in Orlando, only in America, I swear. Eddie is an amazing storyteller, he speaks his truth with grace. It's a page turner that made me laugh out loud and then cry, it's deeply raw and hilarious. I am glad that someone from my generation opened up and so eloquently described what it's like to encounter, process and then overcome stereotyping in America. Eddie rose above the BS while remaining true to his core and in doing so is giving others the strength to do the same. One of my favorite all time books is "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield and FOB is right up there in integrity and insight.

Haungington. I connect with this book on so many levels. This book parallels my life and gave a voice to the thoughts and feelings I've always had. Big ups to Eddie, homie is fearless.

Immigrants and Ghostface. I may not be Asian but as a little immigrant girl who grew up with Mobb Deep, loves Ghostface and never has the kicks my parents refused to buy, this kid tells it like it is for so many of us. Well written and with heart. Go get em Eddie! Baohaus is defo on the list for my next NY trip. X

Eddie Huang. Great Read. Makes you hungry, and inspired to see someone so passionate about food. I recommend!
