John Barleycorn by Jack London Book Summary

The book is about the social facilitation of alcohol, but is also a cautionary tale about the addictive powers of alcohol and its deleterious effects on health. London describes the effects of alcohol along both optimistic and pessimistic lines, insisting at some points that it helped him in his developmental process towards becoming a man as he understood the idea and a writer and at other points that it limited in developing him in a healthy way. Alcohol was, during his period, not recognized as it is in the post-2000 period. It remains an important and enduring milestone of his authorial career and of many of the writers of his period, as well as the milestone of many of the social historians of his period. London insisted that historical literature was always more important in his life than alcohol, however.

John Barlycorn. This book is very interesting, it makes a person want to get an education and have a few drinks while doing so. My Great Grandfather passed a copy of this book down to my Grandfather, Father and to me. We are all drinkers of moonshine, rum and scotch. I drank more in my youth than did Jack London and know what he means by surviving alcohols scorches. The maggots do crawl when the first few sips are taken and the white logic does try to depress you. Be careful if you choose to drink alcohol because it can play tricks on your reasoning, it is ok to not drink in any situation and choosing to not drink can be an admirable position. I drink scotch and beer only and every day. I have not been drunk in years and regard a hangover as a complete waste of a good day. One cold beer after a hard days work is worth a million cases of beer on vacation. Don’t drink and drive, you could kill someone innocent very easily and ruin many peoples lives including your own. Peace.

A journey from the cork. One is too many and a dozen are not enough. JBC will tantalize your tastebuds, titillate your temptation and make you question if your place in the novel has been moved or if the author has purposefully repeated chapters to simulate the experience of the white logic.
