Great Salty Old Book. What a great read for the sailors in all of us. Takes us back to a time which defined true adventurers and make us realize how dependent we are on modern life.

Captures the charms of many places long since changed, and the excitement of single-handedly facing waves the size of apartment buildings in a boat smaller than a snug cottage. Slocum had sailed the world several times over before starting this adventure, so his eye was trained to capture the kinds of remarkable details that thrill travelers and homebodies alike.

A great Sailing read!. Nothing stodgy or pompous in Slocum’s writing style. His casual, conversational expression keeps you invested in him and what he encountered. To a history buff this could never be boring. He bridged the worlds of folks at every level of society, from Newport Elite to murderous indigenous peoples to pirates, government leaders and just plain folk. World events contemporaneous to his three years at sea were fascinating to me. That he was on the last leg of his journey through the heart of the Caribbean right at the peak of the Spanish American War, encountering the Oregon at sea, was amazing. Small world really.

Beautiful read. Such a great book, written by a true man who lived his life to the fullest. Working on boats myself, Mr. Slouch really touched on sea-based experiences that we all have on the ocean that I previously thought as indescribable. Beautiful book, I recommend it to all that will have enough money to buy a sailboat after finishing, because you will want to sail the world in this man's wake afterwards.
