The Collected Works of William Hope Hodgson by William Hope Hodgson Book Summary

William Hope Hodgson was a master of supernatural horror, dark fantasy, grim adventure, and weird imaginings. His works of cosmic horror and supernatural fiction helped transform Gothic horror into the modern weird and speculative fiction of the twentieth century. The Collected Works of William Hope Hodgson gathers Hodgson's most influential tales together in one lavishly illustrated volume. Throughout his career, William Hope Hodgson produced a large body of work, consisting of essays, short fiction, and novels. His influential works spanned several overlapping genres including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction with a focus on the supernatural, otherworldly, and nautical. Hodgson used his many experiences at sea to provide authentic details to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean, including his series of linked tales forming the "Sargasso Sea Stories". In addition to stories on the strange horrors of the sea, his novels, such as The Night Land (1912) and The House on the Borderland (1908), feature more cosmic themes while works like Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder explore supernatural fantasy and ghost stories through the eyes of an occult detective. H. P. Lovecraft thought very highly of Hodgson's works and described The Night Land as "one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written". Similarly, Terry Pratchett called The House on the Borderland "the Big Bang in my private universe as a science fiction and fantasy reader and, later, writer". Included in this beautifully illustrated collection are the following novels and short stories: Novels The Boats of the Glen Carrig (1907) The House on the Borderland (1908) The Ghost Pirates (1909) The Night Land (1912) Short Stories and Collections "A Tropical Horror" (1905) "The Voice in the Night" (1907) "Through the Vortex of a Cyclone" (1907) "'My House Shall Be Called the House of Prayer'" (1911) "The Derelict" (1912) "Homeward Bound" (1912) "The Waterloo of a Hard-Case Skipper" (1919) "Demons of the Sea" (1923) "Jack Grey, Second Mate" Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder The first five stories were published serially, as Carnacki, the Ghost-Finder in The Idler, January–May 1910 "The Gateway of the Monster" (1910) "The House Among the Laurels" (1910) "The Whistling Room" (1910) "The Horse of the Invisible" (1910) "The Searcher of the End House" (1910) "The Thing Invisible" (1912) "The Haunted Jarvee" (1929) "The Find" (1929) Sargasso Sea "The Mystery of the Derelict" (1907) In addition to over thirty custom illustrations, this expansive edition also includes an interactive table of contents to aid in reader enjoyment. Hodgson's writing was inspirational to many science fiction and fantasy writers across generations. In Britain, Adrian Ross, Olaf Stapledon, and Dennis Wheatley were all influenced by Hodgson's work. In the United States, Clark Ashton Smith, August Derleth, and Henry S. Whitehead were also influenced by Hodgson's writings. Modern authors who cite Hodgson as an influence include Iain Sinclair, Gene Wolfe, Greg Bear, China Miéville, Simon Clark, Elizabeth Massie, Tim Lebbon, Terry Pratchett, and Brian Keene. One has only to read Hodgson's varied fiction to see why.
