Goldstein by Volker Kutscher Book Summary
Berlin 1931: To hjemløse unge, Benny og Alexandra, går ind i byens prægtigste indkøbstempel KaDeWe for at stjæle smykker og ure. Men det går frygtelig galt, og Alexandra må nøjes med at være tilskuer, da Benny styrter i døden – måske som offer for vold fra en politimand. Fra det tidspunkt bliver hun jaget.
Et andet sted i byen sidder kriminalkommissær Gereon Rath og keder sig. Han har fået til opgave at overvåge den jødisk-amerikanske gangster Abraham Goldstein, som er ankommet til Berlin.
Samtidig bliver Rath af underverdensbossen Johann Marlow tvunget til at betale en gammel gæld og foretage en privat efterforskning, og uden at ville det lander Rath mellem fronterne i en eskalerende bandekrig.
Og så er der Charly Ritter, Gereon Raths endnu-ikke-forlovede, som er blevet juridisk praktikant ved domhuset i Lichtenberg. Da Charly tilfældigt møder vidnet til dødsfaldet i KaDeWe og lader hende undslippe sin varetægt, kommer Charlys sag i karambolage med Gereons. Samtidig er Goldstein undsluppet politiets overvågning og har tilsyneladende skaffet sig en pistol. Og pludselig keder Rath sig ikke længere ...
