„Gdziekolwiek bym żył, zawsze będę tęsknić za tym krajem… Czasem zdaje mi się, że słyszę łopot skrzydeł i krzyk dzikich gęsi i żurawi przeciągających nad Lhasą w księżycowe, zimne noce… Pragnę gorąco obudzić tą książką trochę sympatii i zrozumienia dla narodu, którego wola życia w wolności i pokoju dotychczas obchodzi świat tak niewiele”.
Austriacki alpinista Heinrich Harrer w 1939 roku wyruszył z niemiecką wyprawą w Himalaje. Niestety plany zdobycia Nanga Parbat pokrzyżował wybuch II wojny światowej, która zastała podróżników w Indiach. Po internowaniu przez Brytyjczyków Harrer próbował wielu ucieczek z obozu, aż w końcu dopiął swego – w 1944 roku z Peterem Aufschnaiterem dotarli do odciętego od świata Tybetu.
Spędzili w tym niezwykłym miejscu kilka lat, aż do komunistycznej inwazji Chin. Opisywany w autobiograficznej książce Harrera Tybet to tradycyjne, zamknięte na cywilizację zachodnią państwo, w którym czas i tradycja działają zupełnie inaczej. Autor miał okazję nie tylko poznać tę egzotyczną dla Europejczyków kulturę, ale też zaprzyjaźnić się z XIV Dalajlamą.
Siedem lat w Tybecie – zekranizowana w 1997 roku z Bradem Pittem w roli głównej – to opowieść o magicznym świecie i tradycji, które już nie istnieją. Pozwala powrócić na dach świata i zrozumieć Tybet na nowo.
