The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros Book Summary

“The Last Letter is a haunting, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational love story.“—InTouch Weekly

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Ryan

Wonderful.. This was such a good book; heart wrenching, but wonderful. Rarely does a story bring on the tears but this one did.

Super Ugly Cry. I've attempted to write this review so many times and just haven't been able to find the words. I also had to come back to my rating. Initially it was 5 stars because, while I was heartbroken, it was beautifully written and kept me glued to the story. But as the days went on, and the more I thought about it, I had to drop a star. I'm used to angst from this author. All of the books I've read by her are pretty angsty but this book is on a whole other level. There are a lot of heartbreaking events in this story. There's a lot of loss. It made it read more like women's fiction than romance. There was one event toward the end of the story (that I won't spoil for anyone else) that is what ultimately made me drop the star. It felt like gratuitous heartbreak. It didn't, for me, add anything to this story other than let's punch the reader in the gut. Other than that one thing, I loved this book. The letters, the strength, the growth: it was all so amazing. I was immediately connected to all of these characters and I wanted everything to work out for them. There were parts that were light and funny and helped balance the incredible amount of angst in this story. *this is my voluntary review of an advanced reader copy*

I am not okay. Heart-shattering.

Those last few chapters…. I liked this book I really did… until those last few chapters. They were beyond unnecessary, and in my opinion ruined the book. I know that this is a fiction book, but no one person experiences that much loss and trauma. And then such an unrealistic loss at that. SPOILER ALERT: No school teacher would take 7 year olds on a field trip where children could fall off the edge of a cliff. And I sure don’t know many individuals that have lost both their parents, their brother and their child all in separate accidents.

I couldn’t quit turning the pages until the very last one. “Double-Awesome”. Love, tears and laughter. I loved all the characters. Especially Colt.

AMAZING!. WOW! If you have read most of Rebecca’s past books, you know she doesn’t hold back. That there’s good, right along side the bad. And Omgah, did she nail it in this book. I absolutely LOVED Beckett and Ella. They had a long and bumpy road, heartache and devastation, but they learned that they could lean on one another, and heal together. Their story is one that will have you laughing, swooning over the relationship Beckett has with the twins, agreeing with Ella’s mama bear personality, and falling head over heels for these characters. This book was wonderfully written, and will pull you in from the first page. My only suggestion is to have a box of tissues with you, because you will need them! A must read that I would highly recommend!!!

Not Just Another Romance Novel. This book begins with a theme that’s predictable, but soon turns into a page turner that will keep you up all night. As with all of Patricia Yarrow’s books it has a message.

My heart broke and was put together at the same time. Oh my gosh I did not expect that. I loved it.

Outstanding!. This book covers EVER emotion. The writing is outstanding. The storyline is, simply put, heartbreaking. Should you attempt to read this? YES. Will you find a flaw? Nope. From page one I was entranced. Do I love the ending? No! I wish things were written differently. Yet, that is what makes this book so special. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s devastating. It’s life. Rebecca took such beautiful care with the main subject. She allowed me...a regular reader...to live and breathe the strength and determination of a family surviving. On a personal note: last week I thought I read my top book of the year. Not gonna lie...this might just trump it. Thank you to all the men and women who serve our country. Thank you Rebecca for giving voice to such a terrible disease. You’re research and ability to create a story like this...PRICELESS. A. Must. Read.

Literally crying.. The last 10% of this book ripped my heart out, stomped on it and set fire to it.

Absolutely beautiful. This is hands down one of the best novels I have read in years. It is a MUST READ. I am in awe of the beautifully tragic storyline and the emotions it stirred within. I shed so many tears, both from happy and sad moments that unravel as you read through this heartwrenching and stunning story of strength, heroism, love and anguish. I felt and still feel so connected to the characters and their relationships that were so eloquently depicted and portrayed. Get ready to be blown away, you won’t regret it.

The Last Letter. Such an intriguing story with lots of mostly downs. But the ups made up for the downs. I enjoyed your writing very much. Sugmum

Heartbreakingly beautiful. I don’t really have the words to convey how I feel about this book. Heartbreaking beautiful, not your average romance, stab you in the heart yet you will be ok... I could not predict anything that happened in the book. This book is the first book in a couple of years to literally bring me to tears and yet it put me back together, just a bit cracked. So many life lessons, so much love and heart ache. This book makes you think and yet you won’t want to put it down. I literally got angry at parts and messaged friends about how I was mad at a character, but that is the beauty of this writing, how much it makes you FEEL!

6 🌟 read. Have you ever read a book that seemed to capture your soul from the first words and hold it hostage, long after the book had ended? That’s what The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros did for me. When this book came out everyone I knew in the book community was raving about it. Not just the normal release day mentions, it was literally everyone shouting READ THIS BOOK. So I thought, alright let me see what’s so special about this book. After reading the blurb I decided to sample the first two chapters before buying and it didn’t take long for me to realize I had to own this book — best decision ever. “But I’m not the center of their universe. I’m more like their gravity.” Describing a book as horribly perfect isn’t probably the best way to write a six-star review, but that’s what every gut-wrenching word was, just horribly perfect. The characters Rebecca Yarros creates feel like you have known them your entire life and the story is so brokenly beautiful. While I was reading I felt like it WAS my life, that it was happening to me not some imaginary person on the page. By the end of the book I was so wrapped up in the emotion that I couldn’t seem to bring myself back to reality. “Sometimes you have to leave so you can know what it is you left. You don’t really value something until you’ve lost it.” I’m not going to give anymore information than what Rebecca provides in the blurb, because if you decide to read this book I want you to truly experience it. Don’t skip over words or through chapters, make sure you take in every moment on the page. Lastly mentally prepare yourself and get out the kleenex, you are about to experience a book hangover that will last for days. .

I was expecting something but not that…. Have a box of tissues.

Must read!. Definitely one of my fav books now. It was beautiful yet gut wrenching 😩💔

It’s that bittersweet messy thing we call life. A good purge with sunshine in between the bad. Enjoyed reading immensely.

A tragic tale of loss and love.. A heartbreaking read! This book takes you on an emotional roller coaster and you hope for the good to come to this family, only to keep being knocked down. Loved this book.

Seriously? We could leave the last chapter or two out?. I completely understand not all stories can have a happy ending and something the happy endings in books are a little cheesy… but this poor woman lost every single person in her family, her 5 year old child gets sick, survives and she gets everything she wants… why not end it there? Why randomly have her other 5 year old fall off a cliff and die? I’m sorry but the first 95% of the book was amazing and heartfelt and beautiful, but the ending was completely unnecessary and ruined the book for me. I am a chronic re-reader and even if I lived the rest I will not read this again for the sole fact the ending was added solely to shock the audience.

I’ll recommend The Last Letter until the day I die.. Even though The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros is just now coming out, it was still 2018 when I read it and it was honestly the best book I read all year. This book was written from the standpoint of someone who knows, who has been there and it shows. At first glance, this appears to be a story about a single mom who loses her last bit of family to war and the buddy who was asked to watch over her small family. The more I read, the more I realized that this was more Beckett's journey than Ella's, especially the last half of the book. I am going to attempt to tread carefully here because I do not want to spoil anything, however, you will definitely want to have your tissues near you as you read. I am not a crier, but I had ugly tears at one point of this book. I was at work and was pretty inconsolable for a short while. Because it is sad, yes, but also because it is just so stunning and beautiful. Ella's journey is filled with rocky uphill battles but she demonstrates the strength of the human spirit. Ella and her children, Colt and Maisie, are such incredible human beings. This whole book is packed with their resilience and indomitable joy in the face of overwhelming adversity. The reason I say that this is more Beckett's book than Ella's is because he is there to witness and learn from this small family. After all the horrors of war and losing his best friends, Beckett really has little drive to do much more than fulfill his friend's last request. It is through watching Ella and her children spread joy and continue to pursue their dreams despite roadblocks, that Beckett begins to come alive. He realizes that life does go on and that he can have a hand in how it is experienced. He begins to see that he can have joy in his own life, even after the his incredible loss. I do not approve of the way that Beckett hides some truths from Ella. I do appreciate that it needed to be done, but I just had to say it. I loved this book from beginning to end and I'll recommend it until my dying day. This book is life-changing and I'm a better person for having read it. Thank you, Rebecca for sharing this amazing gift with us.

Heart wrenching and heartbreaking. Okay, so this is going to be a different type of review because I’m trying to process everything that I read and come to terms with all of it. First, The Last Letter is an amazing story that is a must read. Now, I would normally describe the story but I’m going to let the blurb speak for itself and talk about the writing. The writing was heart wrenching and soul grabbing. The Last Letter is full of a beautiful words that will have you feeling love, anger, heartbreak, strength and grace. I am so very thankful that I was fortunate to read this beautiful story.

Keep the tissues coming. Hands down best book I’ve ever read. It has officially ruined me for all other books. I’ve never sobbed so hard in my life . this book just absolutely tore through me but it’s amazing

Chaos. Chaos - His call sign is a complete resemblance of the way this book messes with your heart. I could NOT put this book down and it had me sobbing at 3am. For all that is good in this world, READ THIS BOOK. Well done Rebecca, thank you for your words

Easy read. I liked this book but didn’t love it. I thought the story line was a little far fetched, which I guess is the magic of reading books, but I like things to be a little more realistic. The ending was definitely not what I expected! I would recommend if you want an easy read.

A real hero in a love story. Rebecca Yarros changes the standards of what a romance should be with The Last Letter. Be prepared to swoon at what a true hero will do for love.

HEARTFELT STORY!. It’s just such a good book honestly , like i don’t know , but Ella was right everything that happened teaches you something . Even though it’s just a book i felt like i learned to value everything in life & to never give up yk? it’s just a very moving and inspirational book with lots of ups and downs but their so worth it .

Wow. This book ripped me to pieces. It was so good but so heart wrenching.

Might want to buckle up!. I rarely write reviews, but wow, this one got me! Could not put this down, even when I knew it was about to rip my heart to pieces! I loved every part of this story. The love and the tragedy. The roller coaster! Cruelly well-written. Get a box of Kleenex. Or two. Heck, grab the tequila. You’ll need it all!

Gripping, heartbreaking and surprising love story. This was a book that I could not put down- I finished it within a few hours as I had to know how it ended and whether they all got the happy ending they deserve. The ending was very shocking but finished in a beautiful way

Worth it. I cried. It’s not often that a book has the power to make me cry. But I cried. Multiple times. This book is made to touch your soul in several ways. I laughed and I cried and I hoped. There are some literary pieces that change your day, week or even your month. This one was definitely one of them. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE BOOK, YOU’LL KNOW IT WAS ALL WORTH IT.

A story full of love, loss and family. I. Am. A. Wreck! Literally. A blubbering mess. It’s been exactly 6 hours since I finished ‘The Last Letter’ and I’m still struggling to compose myself. How to review a book like this, with so many different facets, a book that made me feel so, so emotional. How can I review without giving away the story, and still give the book the credit it deserves? What a wonderful story, I loved this family as if they were my own, no wonder Beckett was drawn in so deep. The twins were just adorable, which only makes the story all the more emotional. Cute kids, a devoted military dog and two people learning to love and trust each other. Beckett is fighting his demons, Ella is struggling to share the load. How can one woman take so much heartache? A story full of love, loss and family. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my honest review.

Amazing Read. Such a good book, hooked from the very start right until the last page! Read all in 2 days I loved it that much! Amazing author and could not recommend this book more !

Not for the faint of heart. Beautifully written and captivating as always but I confess that this book left me feeling angry and completely heartbroken. I was expecting a miracle only to be met with a tragedy that seemed completely pointless. I feel like the story really didn’t need to end the way it did.

Awesome. I couldn’t stop reading it, I didn’t want it to end

The last letter. OMG . Full five stars . Couldn’t put this one down . Well done Rebecca Yarros . Held me through all the way then grabbed my heart and ripped it out . Don’t think I’ve cried so much . Great story and well written . I want a Maisie story now .

Destroyed me. This book was heart wrenching, I saw multiple reviews stating “it destroyed me” and I couldn’t wait to pick it up. I can honestly say, they were right. It completely ruins you, and I’m all the better for reading this story, truly gut-wrenching, fulfilling and leaves you grateful and hopefully, thank you Rebecca.

The Last Letter by Rebeca Yarros. Fantastic story, well written and poignant.

Just… Beauiful. I cried at the end and I never cry while reading many books. Beautiful story. It makes you think about how nothing is certain and say “I love you” whenever you can.
