Il romanzo di Takis Würger racconta la storia d’amore di una coppia sbilanciata: Fritz, di origini svizzere, che arriva a Berlino negli anni quaranta con le sue ambizioni artistiche, e Kristin, una donna bella, strana e molto sicura di sé. È lei a prendersi cura di Fritz che, un po’ ingenuo, non sa muoversi bene in una grande città. Ma anche Fritz ha i suoi pregi: è benestante e cittadino svizzero. Kristin se lo porta in giro nelle folli notti berlinesi, tra locali notturni alla moda e posti che non avrebbe mai trovato senza di lei. Kristin sembra conoscere le regole non scritte dei nazisti e come funzionano le cose. Un giorno però la donna sparisce misteriosamente e quando ricompare risulta evidente che è stata torturata. Viene fuori che Kristin è un falso nome, che in realtà si chiama Stella, ed è di origine ebraica. Sconvolto, Fritz decide di restare con lei anche quando scopre che Stella sta cercando di salvare i suoi genitori dal campo di concentramento tradendo e denunciando altri ebrei nascosti.
