Show Don’t TellThe story was fine, but the writing and execution that made it so insufferable that I quit after chapter 56. 1) Infodumps: Instead of flashbacks or Feyre discovering things on her own, people just TELL her things. She casually asked how some characters met each other and they went on a 19 page textbook explanation, including their parent’s love life and culture. The entirety of chapter 54 was a monologue from Rhysand justifying all his actions from day one. I’m not joking. 2) The only reason I liked Rhysand in Book 1 was because he was morally grey—but in Book 2 he’s suddenly a saint. Perfection. Epitome of feminism. We know this because the author explicitly compares Tamlin vs Rhysand like it’s a middle grade story and not new adult. There’s no subtlety. 3) The “—“ and “…” were so overdone there were about 6 PER PAGE, to the point where I couldn’t concentrate on the story anymore. Unfortunately SJM’s writing is not for me. However if you do like her writing, this will probably be a 5 star read so keep that in mind!.Score: 1/5

Stop at Book 1 if you Like TamlinThe legend of Tam Lin is one where the heroine, through trials and tribulations, rescues her love. Sarah J. Maas captured this in the first novel, “A Court of Thorns and Roses, and then completely erases it in the second installment. Tamlin becomes a villain, completely at odds with the loving, kind character readers saw in the first book, who—just in case anyone forgot—Feyre RISKED HER LIFE TO SAVE DUE TO HER LOVE FOR HIM. Why the author decided this massacre of characterization was necessary is beyond me, but it’s not the first time her books have disappointed me by completely and utterly destroying the characters she’s built. A tragedy of a follow-up book that throws any goodwill I had for the series out the window. Other readers may swoon over the brooding and troubled Rhys, but I miss the time when all I had read was book 1..Score: 1/5

In this book the main character, Feyre, goes from loving Tamlin to leaving him, and then hating his guts because he is a horrible, despicable person. Really?? All of this without even a conversation? I lost touch with the characters as they transformed completely. Everything I loved about them was turned into a nightmare, and I simply could not get on board with where the author was taking me.
