We Were Never Here by Andrea Bartz Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK • “This book is every suspense lover’s dream and it kept me up way too late turning pages. . . . A novel with crazy twists and turns that will have you ditching your Friday night plans for more chapters.”—Reese Witherspoon

A backpacking trip has deadly consequences in this “eerie psychological thriller . . . with alluring locales, Hitchcockian tension, and possibly the best pair of female leads since Thelma and Louise” (BookPage), from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd.

A Marie Claire Book Club Pick • Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR and Marie Claire

Emily is having the time of her life—she’s in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she brought back to their room attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last year’s trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily can’t believe it’s happened again—can lightning really strike twice?

Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving headfirst into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their cover-ups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can Emily outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedom—even her life?

Meh. Was intrigued in the beginning then thought it got a little sloppy.

Suspenseful and fun. I enjoyed this book a lot. The author the built the tension and suspense very well.

Could be better. Pretty amateurish. Had a hard time getting through it

First Book I’ve Read In A While. Couldn’t put it down! I just turned 26 and I haven’t read a book so quickly in probably five years, it’s the adhd lol.

Interesting read!. I loved the descriptive details throughout and the mystery behind Emily and Kristen’s friendship!

Ho hum. I was excited to read this, started very slow, got interesting but then repetitive, then a quick wrap up of the prolonged story in the last few pages. Some ends should have been tied up story wise, but learned about a gaslighting relationship from this I suppose.

Could not stop reading !!!. Read this book in week and a half ! It was so good! I think the fact that the chapters are short makes it easier to digest. A great pager turner !

Slow start and left with questions. Took a while to get into…very repetitive but then it got interesting as things began to emerge with the characters. The end wrapped up too quickly and i felt i was left with little explanation for some of main storylines.

Where’s the Twist?. This was a really fun novel, but I love a good twist and this book didn’t satisfy that need. Nevertheless, it was a fun book in my opinion.

Highly recommend. Captivating and full of good twists!

Eh. Started off really great and slow and then felt like we were falling down a hill trying to tie up lose ends….

Not worth it. How many times can you read about the same two events? The details were just repeated over and over and over…I honestly don’t know why I kept reading it. It picked up a little towards the end, but then ended weirdly.

Good but repetitive. Good except felt repetitive at times. Not my favorite

Slow start, strong finish. I was excited to read this book as it had been suggested to me. It took awhile for the book to pick up but the story ended up being extremely captivating. I enjoyed it thoroughly

Nerve racking!. I almost quit reading it because it made me so nervous, combining all my fears into one book. I am glad I persevered and finished. Great read.

Great Book. Engaging and held my attention until the very end!

Unexpected and shocking!. “Is it really a good idea to be alone in a cabin in the woods with Kristen?” Kristen? Your best friend for ten years? Or Kristen, the possible psychopath? This is Emily’s dilemma. Of course, it’s complicated. Emily and Kristen take an annual backpacking trip to exotic, off the beaten track vacation spots. Last year in Cambodia, a casual hookup turned violent and Kristen fought off Emily’s attacker. She killed him…accidentally, she said. Then, on this year’s trip in Chile, Kristen takes handsome Paolo back to the room. Emily walks in to find him dead on the floor. Another brutal attack. Another dead body to dispose of? Coincidence? Emily returns to Milwaukee, her job and a new relationship only to find that Kristen is moving near her and texting her frequently to leave odd mentions of what happened in Chile. This cat and mouse game escalates until Emily reaches a breaking point. What happens next is totally unexpected and shocking. 5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine and Andrea Bartz for this ARC.

Interesting. This story has an interesting premise and two excellent characters.

Not great. Very slow. Took over 200 pages to get going.

Wish I would’ve passed... Too wordy, reminded me of a lifetime movie.

Page turner. What a page turner! Couldn’t put it down. Loved every second!

Great Buildup, Chaotic Confusing Resolution. I really liked the careful rendition of the codependent relationship between these two women. This I say even though how Emily behaved in the two confrontations (no spoiler here) was illogical and self-defeating. But I was very disappointed in the way that was resolved in such a confusing preposterous way. And the last few lines of the book seem like something thrown in without foundation, really.

Great summer read. A great summer holiday read……especially while traveling the world!

Kept me reading, but didn’t like the ending. I love suspenseful stories and this one was good but not GREAT. Could have done a little more with the ending to make it one of those that you finish and say, wow wasn’t expecting that!

Just ok. OK.

Just ok. It was ok. Not up to par with the Reese Witherspoon review. I probably won’t read her books again.

Gripping. If you have personally experienced a narcissist/codependent gaslighting relationship, this book will ENRAGE you. The twists are unparalleled and chilling. The main character is relatable and the storyline is brilliant and unpredictable. This book brewed so many emotions within me and I am still digesting the words after closing the covers. This book is thrilling by every definition of the word. It will stick with me for quite some time.

Not worth it. This book was a waste of time & money. Could tell from the very beginning what was going to happen. the majority of the book is spent focused on the same woman’s paranoids thoughts.

Gripping. Couldn’t put it down. Fantastic!

Wowza. At first I wasn’t sure how this book was going to be but just a few chapters in I was hooked. Kristen is definitely a psycho and always was since childhood. Watch out for gaslighters people!!! Glad Emily got her happy ending…. Or so it seems 😉

Unputdownable. Great characters. An amazing hypberbolic take on co-dependent friends. I loved every page! Kristen is a character for the ages. Emily is great as the staid one. Sometimes it took her a little longer than logical to catch up with the reader in terms of insight, but then, that is the point of trust.

Hikergirl. A page turner and a roller coaster ride! Loved it!

Boring. Couldn’t finish

6/10. This book was good, don’t get me wrong. It starts out sooooo slow. It’s very descriptive, which I enjoyed, but the ending was rushed. I feel like the slow beginning coupled with the rushed ending just wasn’t my cup of tea. I found the characters to be interesting, and the story line was intriguing. Just wish the ending wasn’t so rushed 🙁

Interesting!!. This was my first time reading a book like this and it was an interesting read! It had me suspicious of all characters and then the end had me stunned because I felt like the ending was a weird twist that I kind of expected but also left me doubting what I thought all along? Who was the crazy one? I was waiting for the title to appear at the end, but I never got it… I just got more questions. Over all though, it kept my interest and I wanted to read more!

Eh. Just eh. Expected spectacular and wasn’t that great at all :(

Single white female revised!!. A cliff hanger of a harrowing collection of experiences with sociopathic friend who seemed to be an answer to Emily’s prayers in finding such a loyal fun and supportive friend until a series of deaths, lies and gaslighting begin to become so frequent and terrifying that Emily’s life and those of whom she loves is on the line. Great thriller!

Couldn’t stop reading!. Absolutely riveting, exciting, mysterious!

We were never here. Interesting characters and story but pretty creepy in many ways. I didn’t love it, had a hard time reading it in some parts. Actually read the ending about 3/4 through the book so I knew what happened if I decided not to finish. An odd story.

Not great. The first half is repetitive and the rest Is predictable. The ending was stupid.

Amazing!. This is one of those books that you think about for weeks after. I hope they make this into a movie one day.
