The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan Book Summary
The instant New York Times bestseller!
“Sublime…Colgan infuses her latest book with humor, wit, suspense and a perfectly cast love triangle.”--USA Today
"The Christmas Bookshop is literary hot chocolate with a bourbon shot: hot, sweet but with a surprising emotional kick."--The Times (UK)
Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel.
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life does not appeal.
Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.
Thrown rather suddenly into the inner workings of Mr. McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the picturesque streets of historic Edinburgh, Carmen is intrigued despite herself. The store is dusty and disorganized but undeniably charming. Can she breathe some new life into it in time for Christmas shopping? What will happen when a famous and charismatic author takes a sudden interest in the bookshop—and Carmen? And will the Christmas spirit be enough to help heal her fractured family?

A great read. Wonderful story and beautifully written. My favorite book by far this year.
I’m Dreaming of a…. My first question is: where do I find a Spice Girls duvet?! How did I not know these existed? In other news, The Christmas Bookshop is a coming of age story for our main character Carmen, but I also think it’s a coming of age story for a family. When one central relationship is in turmoil, it can really divide a family. The relationships in this book are interesting and at times sad. I really enjoyed Mr. McCredie’s character, he was probably my favorite! His back story was interesting and I love his nostalgia. Obviously from my question, I’m also a very nostalgic person (Yay Spice Girls)! Plus, I love the idea of a Christmas bookshop. It seems perfect for Edinburg. And If you’re a fan of the Bookshop series’, you’ll see some familiar characters intertwined, which I always love! The books are their own stories, but I still recommend starting at The Bookshop on the Corner and then continue through the rest.
Basic but cute. I snagged this cute story while it was on a $.99 sale, and I don’t regret it. I don’t like many Christmas novels because of how cheesy they can be, but I actually didn’t hate this one. I thought the trope of trying to save a bookshop wasn’t the most original, however, Colgan made it her own. I enjoyed seeing Carmen grow as a person, and I loved the shop owner. I do wish we got to learn more about the personalities of the children, and I would have liked to really see more of Carmen and Sophia’s relationship. I felt like the importance of family was supposed to be one of the big takeaways, but we don’t really get to see much about the bond between sisters. I also wish they would have given Sophia’s husband a few more lines when he returned, but no luck there. I hate Skylar from beginning to end though; I don’t even feel like her character was very necessary. I will confirm that this story made me want to visit Scotland at Christmas time ❄️
Close yours and you feel, see, hear, smell the old city.. My 1st international novel. I embraced it to the fullest. I just close my eye and the the ancient city came alive with the interesting characters. In the future I will read another of her novels. If I ever sail to Northern Europe, most definitely I will visit Scotland.
Adorable. Adorable feel good story.
The Christmas Bookshop. A lovely light read. Enjoy!
Lovely. I love Jenny Colgan and have read many of her books. This book was just lovely in all the right ways. Jenny Colgan’s books make me feel good, like I’m sitting in a big comfy chair with a cup of warm tea…
A Tale of Life & Love. Absolutely loved this story! Very relatable relationships and how we sometimes don’t see the true importance until we open up to one another.
Perfect Christmas Story. Engaging read, with a little romance, a little mystery, and a lot of heart.
A Perfect Christmas Book. I just re-read this book for the second time and loved it as much as the first time I read it. The descriptions of Edinburgh and the bookshop are just magical. A highly recommended book I shall keep to reread each Christmas season.
