1984, Londra è buia e devastata.
In seguito a una Rivoluzione politica e militare il mondo viene suddiviso in tre grandi blocchi: Estasia, Eurasia e Oceania, in cui si svolge l’azione.
In Oceania viene instaurato un governo dittatoriale e oscurantista guidato dall’invisibile e onnisciente figura del Grande Fratello.
Il protagonista, Winston Smith, lavora al Ministero della Verità come membro del Partito Esterno ma nutre molti dubbi riguardo all’ideologia e agli slogan del Partito. Stanco del controllo totale e desideroso di ricrearsi una propria realtà, a partire dalle riflessioni coltivate di nascosto su un diario, compie dei gesti sempre più trasgressivi e rischiosi. Una storia d’amore proibita e clandestina, infine, lo spingerà oltre ai limiti dei suoi stessi sogni.
Scritto nel 1948 come critica feroce a ogni forma di regime totalitaristico, il romanzo è diventato subito un classico della letteratura inglese e un caposaldo del genere distopico.
