Balthazar by Lawrence Durrell Book Summary
Si bien en el primer libro del Cuarteto la imagen que se nos ofrecía de las relaciones amorosas y sexuales entre Darley y la enigmática Justine conservaban un cierto halo romántico, la versión de los acontecimientos que nos proporciona el eridito doctor Balthazar abre nuevas vías a la interpretación de esos mismo sucesos, así como también del suicidio de Pursawarden.
Estamos pues ante la misma historia ya narrada en Justine, y sin embargo la forma de contarla, la atención a unos aspectos u otros, el distinto conocimiento de los detalles y el diálogo que se establece entre las cartas en que se cuenta esta historia y el joven que las recibe hacen que sea una novela completamente distinta a su predecesora, con una mayor carga de dramatismo y misterio.
El Cuarteto de Alejandría, formado por Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive y Clea es la obra que convierte a Durrell en un clásico de nuestro tiempo.
Balthazar permite ya al lector empezar a vislumbrar la colosal dimensión literaria que alcanzará El cuarteto de Alejandría, donde Durrell logró llevar un punto más allá el perpectivismo narrativo, al tiempo que sondeaba con inusual intensidad el alma de un grupo de personajes difíciles de olvidar. Una novela deslumbrante, fundacional de un nuevo modo de narrar.
En esta nueva edición de Balthazar se han restituido unos pocos fragmentos que parecen obedecer a un revisión posterior del propio autor, cuando reunió todo el cuarteto en un sólo volumen y tal vez en álgún caso a supresiones de la censura franquista.
