The Gate House by Nelson DeMille Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant.

Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal.

In The Gate House, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.

One of the best books I’ve ever read.. I love all of Nelson DeMille’s book, and this one is the best of the best. Thank you for this fantastic read!

My second favorite book. Second best book I've ever read. ("The Gold Coast" is my first favorite).

The gate house. I bought book but it won't download. 1st time I have ever had this problem. Nancy J. Plass

A great read-- classic de Mille. Don't try to read this novel with your mouth full; you'll choke with explosive laughter. At his best, de Mille has gifts of a great novelist, in the tradition of Trollope. His ability to evoke character and setting are flawlessly surefooted; I come away with new understanding of a male mind. The narrative voice does not falter, and even when the plot is too drawn out the writing is evocative and compelling. Read The Gold Coast first, but do read this sequel.

Dull. The middle section meanders for at least 100 pages. Should have been edited out. Didn’t care for, or about, any of the characters. Reconciliation with first wife totally implausible.

A Bit Lengthy. Mr. DeMille could have written this book with half the pages. While charming at first, John's sarcasm and repetition about his feelings for his in-laws and his mother became grating after awhile.

Gatehouse. This was the most boring, plot-deficient, long-winded, redundant and tedious book I have ever read (actually after turning page after page w/o reading them, finally gave up after 500+ pages and said the heck with it.) An amateurish book that was like an audition for an assistant writer of a day time soap opera. Please don't waste your time on this book.

Disappointed. A very simple (predictable) plot. Large sections of the book consists of condensed content from the first book - presumably to bring a reader up to speed who hasn't yet read The Gold Coast - most irritating to somebody who just read it. Mr. D's other books are captivating, intriguing and highly entertaining- but not this one.

Awesome. Great follow up to The Gold Coast! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Excellent. Throughly enjoyed both of these books. Many twists and turns that I did not except. Love the writing and the main characters sense of humor.

Struggle to read. I am a DeMille fan, especially his newer works. Being a Mafia buff, I read both this and the Gold Coast. I found both books rather depressing. Also I could have done without all the graphic sex descriptions. If anyone found John Sutter' sex life realistic, well congratulations! :)

A Dramatic, witty must read!. A definite must read! DeMille's novel shines as the sequel to "Gold Coast", one of his best. It's a definite page turner and will not disappoint.
