Zu seinem 80. Geburtstag, das hat Walter Kempowski kurz vor seinem Tod verfügt, soll der Gedichtzyklus „Langmut“ erscheinen. „Ich glaubte immer“, so Kempowski, „dass ich nie ein Gedicht schreiben werde, und doch stieß mir die Stimme, wie Rilke sagt, eines Tages den Mund auf. Da wusste ich auf einmal, dass mit meinem Buch ›Im Block‹ noch nicht das letzte gesagt worden war über meine Haftzeit in Bautzen.“
Das Leichte, Helle war dem Schriftsteller Walter Kempowski nicht gegeben. Am Beginn stand die traumatische Erfahrung der Haft in Bautzen. Dort wurde der junge Kempowski durch das DDR-Regime isoliert. Nach seiner Ausreise in die Bundesrepublik ließ sein Gefängnisbuch „Im Block“ aufhorchen. Mit „Langmut“, entstanden in seinen letzten Lebensjahren, schließt sich nun der Kreis.
