Das Sammeln und Bewahren von Erinnerungen war ein zentrales Motiv von Walter Kempowskis Arbeit. Fast 50 Jahre lang frönte er leidenschaftlich einer Tätigkeit, die er „Plankton fischen“ nannte: Er stellte Menschen, denen er begegnete, unterschiedlichste Fragen – nach ihrer Schulzeit, nach Begegnungen mit Prominenten, nach der ersten Liebe. Denn Kempowski war überzeugt, dass das, was dem Einzelnen widerfährt, exemplarisch ist für eine ganze Generation. Simone Neteler, Walter Kempowskis langjährige Mitarbeiterin, hat die Erinnerungssplitter nach den Vorgaben des 2007 verstorbenen Autors zusammengestellt. Das Ergebnis ist ein „Urquell von Erinnerung“, „der Schlamm, aus dem sich das Echolot und die Chronik erheben“ (Walter Kempowski). So ist „Plankton“ als Fundament des Kempowski’schen Werks zu betrachten.
