Still Alice by Lisa Genova Book Summary

In Lisa Genova’s extraordinary New York Times bestselling novel, an accomplished woman slowly loses her thoughts and memories to Alzheimer’s disease—only to discover that each day brings a new way of living and loving. Now a major motion picture starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kate Bosworth, and Kristen Stewart!

Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children and a house on the Cape, is a celebrated Harvard professor at the height of her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her life. As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her memory begins to fail her, she receives a devastating diagnosis: early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Fiercely independent, Alice struggles to maintain her lifestyle and live in the moment, even as her sense of self is being stripped away. In turns heartbreaking, inspiring, and terrifying, Still Alice captures in remarkable detail what it’s like to literally lose your mind...

Reminiscent of A Beautiful Mind, Ordinary People, and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Still Alice packs a powerful emotional punch and marks the arrival of a strong new voice in fiction.

Still Alice. This book is so true to life. My daughter in law has early onset dementia. She was 49, but they believed she had it for a couple of years before. It has almost destroyed my sons family. The only negative I see in this book is most people like my son, do not have the money and there are no real resources for the younger people who have this, unlike Alice's family. You did a great job, I hope everyone pays attention to their loved ones.

Insight. Thank you for this very insightful book! My mother-in-law has dementia and I can't believe the difference in her on a daily basis. Your book helped me to understand her fears, vulnerabilities, confusion and everything else that comes with this very progressive disease. I've learned how to be a better listener and to put myself in her shoes - how frightening. I strongly recommend this read to any caregiver, friend or family member to gain more understanding and compassion for people with this dibilitating disease.

Still Alice. What a great read- couldn't put it down. Best book i've read in awhile. Fantastic!

Still Alice. Great read!

I'm still thinking about this book. I couldn't start another book for awhile after reading this one, it's that good. The Butterfly File broke my heart. Really amazing.

Fantastic!. Very thoughtful... Full of insight & wisdom. A glimpse into our human frailty.

Amazeballs!. 👍👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A fascinating look at Alzheimers. It is difficult to know how to rate this. I got the book shortly after learning that my smart, dynamic mother is in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Genova does an amazing job at describing the fear, sadness and changes that come with this cruel disease. What a terrible thing it is to know that you are gradually losing your mind. Genova's description of Alice's lapses, disorientation and memory loss ate truly harrowing. I felt such compassion for my mother (and father) while reading this book. Every family member is affected by Alzheimer's. My own family members have each had their own response to our mother's illness, as do the characters in the book. I so wanted all the characters in the story to exhibit the best, most loving responses to Alice each step along the way. I especially wished Alice to have a partner who could deal with the disease in a helpful, caring manner. It would have bolstered my confidence that my father will be able to handle the progression and demands of my mother's disease. But, Alice is more supported by her children than she is by her husband and he pulls away from her over time, eventually taking a job in another city. Luckily, by the end of the book, Alice seems to have accepted that she can not control what is happening and is resigned. I have to hope that my mother's own journey with Alzheimer's will not be too much for my father or the rest of us. I am inspired to live each moment I have with my mother as if it might be the last thing she remembers.

I like it oh yeah. Oh yeah

Still Alice. Spellbinding, heartwrenching, and beautifully written. I could not put it down!

Still Alice. I could not put it down. It is an amazing journey.

Still Alice. This book was so accurate and moving. I am a Registered Nurse and worked as Research Nurse on Alzheimer's clinical trials. I cried, laughed and thought about all my patients enrolled in the trials. The frustrations of their loved ones and their desperation for a cure. I really thought this was a non fiction book while reading it. I hope it will be made into a movie to get a broader audience. I read it in 4 days, it would have been in 1 day, if I did not have 2 children and working full-time. Thank you for such a masterpiece and for giving a voice to all those living with this horrific disease. Thank you!

Stile Alice. Brilliant!!!

Amazing. Wish this book was FREE! I read the beginning of the book at the Library, wish I could read the rest... Please make this wonderful book FREE!!!!!

Still Alice. Great read.

Cried at least once every chapter. Moving and eye opening. Beautifully written. Couldnt have been any better than this.

Great and touching story!. There is no greater feeling reading a book than the one I got reading this one. So well-written and imaginative. I could picture my own mother's struggle with dementia as I read Alice's. I could see our own family struggles to understand what was happening to our mother and our own selves, too. Thank you for a wonderful story of love and introspection.

MUST READ. If you know anyone or have came across Alzheimer's disease in any way at all, you should read this book. She grabs you from the beginning and if you're like me, who has witnessed this disease in a family member, you will relate every step of the way. You understand Alzheimer's from the view of the patient and it's just such a refreshing yet disheartening feeling all in one. But beware... keep the tissues close by.

LOVED IT!!!!. Wow, what an amazing book, it felt like it was a real person telling the story! It was really sad and a few times brought tears to my eyes because this a very real disease and affects so many people, and I knew someone who suffered from early onset Alzheimers and it's a very sad progression. I highly recommend this book! I'm usually extremely critical about books and rarely give out 5 stars, but this one definitely deserved every star! The writing is captivating and I look forward to reading her other book too!

Brilliant. Very gifted writer. I am very much in awe of this story and I have not said that about a book for a long time. Alice's journey broke my heart. At the end of the book I found myself wishing I had know this fictional character named Alice. I bought it on iTunes but I will also be purchasing it for my bookshelf and another one to share with friends.

Painfully truthful. This is an excellent well written book which shows the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Highly recommend !!.

Gut wrenching. So true to life. Beautifully written and without embellishment.

Poignant and so true. My mother died last year, almost six years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's. In the book I liked the perspective of looking at Alzheimer's from the first person perspective, I liked Alice and I could relate to John and her children's reactions, actions and words. More often than not though I put the book down in tears as I recalled my mother's similar episodes. I told my sister about the book and encouraged her to read it but she said she didn't want to because she doesn't want to think about having Alzheimer's herself. For me, the story seemed to bring me closer to a person I love and miss. Still Alice is so realistic, from the discussion during the first diagnosis to the scene where John and Alice are eating ice cream. My mom lost her language early in this disease so much of our communication was in watching her respond expressively. I used to get annoyed with people who came to visit and then cry at all the things my mom had lost. Like Alice's daughters,I liked to think of all the things she still could do.

Still Alice. A well written story, easy to read and understand. Very informative look into the life of someone with this horrific disease. I couldn't put it down. Interesting to see how each person Alice had in her life handled the news, her husband, kids, and work associates. Seeing it from her perspective kept it very interesting.

Emotional and Eye-Opening. I couldn't put this book down; I looked forward to reading it every evening. As a nurse, I've experienced Alzheimer's up close and personal as well as knowing loved ones that have been affected, including my husband's grandmother. This book opened my eyes even more and put me in Alice's shoes, the fear and the pain of knowing one is losing their mind. Terrifying and sad. Amazingly written. Loved this book!!!

I absolutely loved this book. Huntington's disease runs in my family, I have about a 50% chance of getting the disease. While the diagnosis may not be Alzheimer's it's the same: your body is left a diseased shell of who you once were, you've been betrayed by your brain. I watched my aunt and grandfather slowly dying from Huntington's and it was terrifying. While reading this I thought of them the whole time. I absolutely love this book, despite its depressing subject matter, you get to see it a little from the perspective of the person actually suffering. I recommend it to everyone. Read it, make a call to action, and let's find a cure for these horrible neurological disorders! No one should have to see their loved ones literally losing their minds.

Still Alice. My father was an avid skier, a social person who loved life and people. He lived with our family for 16 years and my children grew up with this exceptional man. Somewhere in his eighties he developed symptoms of Alzheimer's. My husband and I overlooked alot of his memory losses thinking it was due to his age. We had just finished painting our kitchen over when he put a bagel in the microwave...walked away and set our kitchen on fire. We knew then it was time to figure out a different plan as it was too dangerous to keep him living in our house with young children. Over the course of the next 8 years we watched this vibrant, funny, Loving man lose his independence, lose his memory and slowly lose his soul. As his daughter it was the hardest thing to watch and understand. I know he wouldn't have wanted to leave the world the way he did, and I realized I wouldn't want my children to have to watch my demise with Alzheimer's . It's ugly, at times unacceptable, And impossible to cope with. I Have asked myself many a time what would I do if this happened to me. After reading about Alices note to herself on what to do I totally would have respected her decision to take the pills. It's a difficult decision but at what point do u ask Enough for my family and. Myself??????

Still Alice. I appreciate how this book is told from the perspective of someone with Alzheimer's . It helps give valuable insight into relating with people with dimentia. As a RN and a family member of someone with this disease, it gives me new ways to communicate and understand those inflicted with the disease.

Highly recommend. This book was recommended to me by one of my coworkers. Words cannot describe how it made me feel. I felt like I was Alice living through this disease. After reading it i feel so much more knowledgeable about Alzheimer’s. Will definitely be rereading

So powerful. This book made me laugh & cry ... And, not gonna lie, a little scared, too. It was a celebration of a life well lived and ended too soon. I will never forget the characters - no spoiler alerts. Just read it. I'll give you 5 bucks if you're not glad you did. HAH! I love books with all of my heart and I'm so glad I read this one.

Hits home!. How many are experiencing early symptoms and don't realize it? Very well written! I didn't want to put it down. My hat's off to Lisa for her excellent work. Looking forward to reading more from her.

Still Alice. A haunting personal journey that starts off like a photograph of an accomplished woman, and ends like a painting of a close friend. A true gift.

Still Alice. Unsentimental, spot on science, and an indepth peek how tragedy invades a family. Wow.

Beautiful. Lisa Genova is a wonderful author. Still Alice is engaging, thought-provoking, well-written, and smart. It takes you through the life of an Alzheimer's patient and shows the good and the bad of the awful disease. I highly recommend this book!

Wonderful portrayal of the progression of Alzheimer's. I loved this story! Having cared for and watching over my father his last few years, I recognized so many of the symptoms that Alice experienced. And, in the same order of progression as I saw them in my father. The author did a great job at writing an important story! Now, I am looking forward to the movie!

Thought provoking. This book drew me in immediately and wouldn't let me go. I read it in one day into the wee hours of the morning. I still can't stop thinking about it. I'm about to read the author's next book, Left Neglected, and am anticipating the same realistic, heart wrenching kind of plot line.

Deceptive. This is not a true story. Genova takes her years of work in the field of Neuroscience and decides to compose a book based on her research and twist into a seemingly charming tale. Too bad that the reader discovers that this a web of Alzhiemer's related cases all tangled up in the book's main character Alice.

Wonderful. This book is an excellent read, a scary glimpse into the world of the dementia patient. It is bitter-sweet, tragic yet funny, and crammed with sensitivity.

Wish I had read this sooner. I liked the honest portrayal of Alice and each family member. It helped me understand what it must have been like for my sister, who died of dementia just about a year ago at age 60.

Still Alice. One of the most amazing books I have ever read! A book with a wealth of information about a tragic disease that every person should be aware of. Hard to put down once you start reading it!

Still Alice surpasses my expectations. I did not think I would love the book as much as I did. It really "hit me"! I highlighted many sentences in the book that made me really think /appreciate my life and want to reference again and again. I highly recommend.

A MUST read to truly understanding this disease.. Losing a good friend suffering from Alzheimer's , who also was diagnosed at an early age, early 50's, this book gives insight from the perspective of the actual person afflicted. At times humorous, and then heartbreaking. Well-written, the story allows the reader to see how living with this disease affects family and friends and life itself. The book is a page-turner. Each chapter I found myself not able to put the book down. Each character in the story is so powerful, and none more so than Alice herself. A strong and vibrant woman with so much life yet to live finds herself diagnosed with a disease most only worry about in their 70's, if not later. A definite must read. There is much information on people in their 80's having to cope with Alzheimer'

Incredible. What an amazing read! Once I started I couldn't put the book down. I've worked with patients with EOA and this truly gives a good perspective into their lives. I don't think I want to see the movie now, though, as I'm afraid it won't portray the true feelings and emotions you can get with the book. I've already downloaded Lisa Genovas next book and I can't wait to start reading it!

Powerful and touching. As I read this book I felt as though I could be Alice. When I read a book and can place myself in it easily, I know I have a winner! The story was depicted in a touching, but also practical way. Anyone caring for someone with a form of dementia might benefit from reading this book, especially since the main character tells the story from her point of view. It was a bit scary in that the reader could someday be in the same position as the main character. Bravo!

Still Alice. Mere words can't express the overwhelming heartfelt gratitude I have for the author, Lisa Genova for writing this book. I feel this truly was a blessing from God! Thank you!

A beautiful read. This is one of my favorite books. While watching Alice's deterioration is terrifying, the book is so beautifully written that it manages to be inspiring. This is one of the few books I bought, kept and re-read from time to time. Don't miss this one!

Still Alice. I am so grateful that someone like Lisa has written a wonderful book on early onset Alzheimer. My own mother started her symptoms at age 39 and had a terrible time with family and friends. Not knowing about this disease in the 60's made it that much worse. I now volunteer for an Alzheimer's group. It is my way of giving back. The book was well written. Thank you. 5 stars

Still Alice. A great read. Brought tears to my eyes. Brought back memories of my stepmother battle with Alzheimer’s. She passed away 5 years ago.

An incredible journey into the mind.... Wow!!! I heard of the book through my father and read it in a day...what an amazing story!! One I will not soon forget!!

Excellent. This was a fantastic and very well written book. Watching Alice spiral into this unpredictable, devastating and unwavering world of loss was just heartbreaking. Learned a lot about the disease and humanity. Hope they find a cure soon. I also read Left Neglected by the same author and it's a great read.

Still Alice. More than just a glimpse inside the life and mind of Alice who has early onset Alzheimer's disease, this is an up-close-and-personal account of living with one's decline, dealing with the unknown, and trying to maintain 'normal' for as long as possible. Beautifully written, terrifying at times, profoundly sad, impossible to let go once the last page has been read.

Poignantly realistic in the narrative of progressive dementia.. as felt by Alice and her family. A story about love and what is meaningful in life.

Good read. I enjoyed reading this book. When I think of getting old, I am most afraid that either myself or my husband won't be able to recognize each other, just kind of my worst case scenario. It was scary to read at times, even brought tears to my eyes a few times. I am going to have to re read it though, as I think I may have missed some things trying to read fast. Such as, what happens to the pills? Does her husband know about her plan? Ahh! It ended very quickly and I wished for more

Great book... Didn't love the movie.. I was so excited to see this movie for the best scene from the book ( I had visualized it, and would laugh out loud when I thought of it)...you know what scene I'm talking about. They didn't include it in the movie. Loved this book from front cover to the very last page, which made me daydream about what might have happened next. Great book Lisa... thank you!
