Port Mortuary by Patricia Cornwell Book Summary

The world's bestselling crime writer Patricia Cornwell presents the extraordinary eighteenth novel in the Kay Scarpetta series, in which Kay Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could ruin her professionally and personally.

Kay Scarpetta has been training at the Dover Port Mortuary, mastering the art of 'virtual autopsy' - a groundbreaking procedure that could soon revolutionise forensic science. And it is not too long before these new skills urgently need to be put into practice. A young man drops dead, apparently from a heart condition, eerily close to Scarpetta's home. But when his body is examined the next morning, there are stunning indications that he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked in the cooler.

When the revolutionary 3D radiology scans reveal more shocking details about internal injuries unlike any Scarpetta has ever seen, she realizes that this is a case of murder - and that she is fighting a cunning and uniquely cruel enemy. Now it is a race against time to discover who and why before more people die. But that time is running out . . .

Back to basics. I have not yet read this book but in reading the last one I figured out why I was having a hard time with her latest books. No autopsy, just a psychological one. I miss the blood and guts of the earlier books. It has been a while since she wrote a book that was just a mystery. Almost all have been going in circles about Kay's relationships with Lucy and Benton as well with Marino. Patricia should get back to basics and leave the drama at home

Slow Pace. Interesting premise, but poorly paced. Drags terribly through 80% of the book, only to resolve quickly with new information at the end. Little for reader to puzzle through, little active intellectual challenge. Just sit back and read, then get the info handed to you at the end. Wish there was more of a puzzle or challenge to it. As for the insight into new technology, no real surprises there either.

Port Mortuary. Not the same level as the other Scarpeta novels. Wordier than necessary, lacks the element of mystery. To dark and moody, a real Scarpeta fan don't waste your time!

Disappointed!. Not one of her better books.

Port sunk. Slow & boring, not page turner like early Scarpetta's, which finished in 1 to 2 sittings. This had to work to finish. Port Mortuary is neither a mystery nor thriller, but more study of screwed up personalities ---- that maybe a Freudian would enjoy. Not Me!!!

Awesome. Loved it

Slow but.... This story didn't take off quickly; however, it does leave you with questions at the end that make you want to continue the Scarpetta series. I enjoy reading how the characters' lives evolve. I'm a true fan and look forward to the next book.

Port Morturaty. Excuse the spelling. This book is great, it keeps you hanging on waiting for the shoe to drop. Great book.

Port Mortuary. Why do I keep reading the Scarpetta books? I don't really know, maybe boredom. Same, same, same...predictably Scarpetta stories start in ice and snow, Kay stressed out, but nevertheless heroic. Lucy excessive and with borderline criminal actions saves the day, Marino, capable and smart, still needs Kay's protection against all odds, Benton, the strong, silent type is beyond human failure, however never quite correct in his assessments, only Kay, who always cooks, but never eats or sleeps, super humanly recognizes the villain and his/her motives who without fail attacks heroic Kay in the last 2 chapters and can not win the confrontation, either dies or gets then arrested. No real plot, no build up to the plot. All seems flat, unemotional, tepid, predictable.

Good book. Found the book easy to read and the group of characters are all back. As usual, Patricia is very accurate in her description of everything including the political history.

The worst. The worst Cornwell yet. I'm thinking Patricia needs to move on from this series. This one was hard to stay focused on as it was dull, there were no "aha" moments. In fact I'm still trying to figure out what the story was suppose to be....very disappointing....she and Patterson are phoning in their books these days, the same formula everytime, but this one just wasn't exciting

Rambling and boring. Much of the dialog did nothing to create an interesting plot. So much was repetitious that I checked to see if I had lost my place in error...unfortunately that was not the case. The characters were not endearing, and the same old problems were covered in far too much detail. The ending just didn't work for me. Not worth reading.

Port mortuary. Certainly not her best. Kinda disappointed!

Great book!!!!!. First book I have read by this author. Love that character of Kay. Look forward to reading other books by this author. Great read. Highly recommended.

Page-turner. Lots of non-medical technical jargon in this one but I really enjoyed all the insight into why Dr. Scarpetta is so driven and yet so insecure. Interestingly designed with several different story avenues which all come together very neatly at the end. Good set-up for the next one too. Thanks Ms. Cornwell; you didn't let me down.

Great book. I have read all of the Scarpetta books and this is the kind of book that made me love Patricia Cornwell! I never liked that she was becoming a celebrity, and glad she is back to basics! I feel Benton is not the same as he used to be, very boring now!

Awful. I've been reading Scarpetta for 20 years and always found the forensic science, the detailed autopsy, the crime scene investigation to be the meat of the story. There was a bad guy who had committed a crime and he needed to be caught. Now, this is all just a mess, and an incompetent one at that. I mean, seriously, how many attempts on her life and narrow escapes can one person experience every 6 months and still be a functioning human being. We've jumped the shark folks. When did the medical examiner become the ultimate fixation of every single notorious criminal on the eastern seaboard. What a waste of time and money. I hate to realize I am condemning Cornwell to the trash heap, like that mysterious torso they came across in the dump in one of the good books oh so many years ago.

Port mortuary. Disappointed in the ending.

I like this book. Lots of negative reviews here but I give her credit for writing a different book. I was getting tired of the same old format and she really changed it up. We got to know more about everyone's backgrounds particularly Kay Scarpetta. Yeah it wasn't a fast paced who dun nit but the flashbacks and the many different themes coming together was terrific. An A+ for a new approach.

Port Mortuary. It's been awhile since I've read a Scarpetta book. The woman is still smart, driven, righting wrongs, taking unpopular positions in a case, and teaching the reader to pay attention to details even when not among the majority. Cornwell has chosen to smooth a few edges of Scarpetta, Marino, Lucy, and Benson without sacrificing any of the intensity of their differences and passions. Great plot with modern science intrigue.

Disappointed. I am a huge fan of Patricia Cromwell and her Dr. Scarpetta series - but this book was quite a disappointment. It took a long time to define a plot. It had an array of characters that I didn't connect with - and not so subtle references to a ominous secret that wasn't all that ominous. I almost felt like it was setting up a cast of characters for a future chapter (book) in Dr. Scarpetta's life.

Cornwell needs to refocus. This book was terrible. I have read all the Scarpetta novels and have always enjoyed them to the point of losing sleep. This book took me 3 months to read. Scarpetta is dark and whiny in this book. Nothing like the confident Scarpetta of old. She needs to get over Marino and Benton drama because it's not a viable story line anymore. I won't spend money on the next book. This was an awful read.

Gets worse and worse. I don't know why I keep reading corn wells books. They get worse and worse. The early scarpetta books were great but the last four or five are slow, boring and less believable.

Very boring. Don't waste your time I couldn't even get myself up finish this book . I have loved her other novels . This one had me falling asleep.

Good mystery!. Confusing at first but captivating at the end!

Port Mortuary. Good read!

What were her editors and publisher thinking. This was the most poorly written and (more importantly) the most poorly edited book in recent memory. I have been a Patricia Cornwell fan (until Scarpetta) and the latest book truely angers me. There is nothing more than overindulgent mental dialog in the entire manuscript. Nothing happens! The first person dialog is nothing more than that. The whole book is a meandering self (paranoid) conversation in which Scarpetta talks to herself - page after page after page!!! I erased this book from my itunes library. I won't read another Cornwell book again.

Port Mortuary. I have had it with Cornwell. She is so full of herself, and Scarpetta likewise. The plot is so disjointed and wordy, that it is very difficult to read, let alone understand. Scarpetta thinks she is Superwoman. Everybody is against her, and she knows better than anyone else. If I had purchased this book, I would be extremely disappointed !

Sport motuary. Awful!1

Port Mortuary. I’ve read many of P. Cornwell’s books, and enjoyed them. This one had almost too much going on from a previous book so it was a bit confusing. Finally got hooked in. I very much like books that have nanobots in them. So frightening and fascinating!

Not one of her best. This one felt more contrived and hard to follow the logic of events.

Port mortuary. Good reading but if Marino irritates Scarpetta why doesn't"t she handle him??? and her insecurities are getting to me!!! Yet I found the book hard to put down.

PM. Another great book but another rushed ending...

Plodding and difficult. I remember a time that I pre-ordered all of the Scarpetta books. Now I find them difficult to read. Kay feels sorry for herself and betrayed by everyone. The prose is disjointed and hard to follow. Wait for this one to get to the library because it isn't worth the money.

Disappointed. By far, her worst book. Slow and hard to follow. Who is this author and what have you done with the real Patricia Cornwell????

Port mortuary. Not her best. The book is rambling. I could not get a good sense of timing. Jumps around without transition between locales and times.

Port Mortuary. Extremely convulated read. Disconnected and unlike Cornwell's previous books. Having read ALL of her books, this one convinced me to stop before I get more disappointed. Patricia, you have lost your touch!

Enough whining!. I made it through Port Mortuary but not without considerable effort. I found this to be similar to trudging through a heavy snowdrift. I've enjoyed her novels before but this had endless paragraphs with no dialogue where Kay worried endlessly, seemed to have lost all confidence and was continually questioning others loyalty to her. Most of the book took place in the paranoid confines of her own mind. I found myself missing the other characters.

Too Left-Wing. I had to force myself to finish the book because I had already paid for it. I will never read or buy another book by Patricia Cornwell. She is obviously a liberal and anti-Reagan.

Ehh, it was okay. I have read every book from the Scarpetta series and most of Cornwells other books as well. This book was good, but not her best work by far. Lots of the characters were thrown in at once with little explanation. Although all loose ends were tied up by the end, it was a confusing read at times. All in all I would not purchase this book again.

Port Mortuary. BOOORING! what a disappointment. Just, endless descriptions of colleagues that are completely unncessary……Don't waste your monery or your time

Not what I come to expect from Ms Cromwell. Not the suspense filled novel that I have enjoyed in other Scarpetta series novels. Though the book was excellent, it did lack the action that I kept waiting for. Just a slight letdown.

Port Mortuary. Loved it! She had me on page one!

Port Mortuary. One of the better books written by P.C. That she manages to write without graphic sex and "F'!?*' every other word is refreshing.
