Damned by Chuck Palahniuk Book Summary

“As gleefully, vividly, hilariously obscene as you'd expect. . . . Irreverent and hugely entertaining." —NPR

From the bestselling author of Fight Club comes a dark and brilliant satire about adolescence, Hell, and the Devil.

Madison is the thirteen-year-old daughter of a narcissistic film star and a billionaire. Abandoned at her Swiss boarding school over Christmas, she dies over the holiday, presumably of a marijuana overdose. The last thing she remembers is getting into a town car and falling asleep. Then she's waking up in Hell. Literally. Madison soon finds that she shares a cell with a motley crew of young sinners: a cheerleader, a jock, a nerd, and a punk rocker, united by their doomed fate, like an afterschool detention for the damned. Together they form an odd coalition and march across the unspeakable landscape of Hell--full of used diapers, dandruff, WiFi blackout spots, evil historical figures, and one horrific call center--to confront the Devil himself.

Again. Chucky does it again. Can't wait for part 2!!

Missing so much. When I read Chuck, I'm looking for the three c's....campy, creepy, and clever. While successful at campy, it failed miserably on the other two fronts. Re read "Choke" if you have the time on your hands.

Very original. A very fine read. The picture painted of hell both disturbing and hilarious. I strongly recommend.

Not my favorite. The only reason I finished this book, was to see if it got better. It really didn't. His writing is amazingly descriptive, but this story was a terribly long rambling I could have lived without reading. If you are new to this author's books, choose any other one and you will be pleased.

Awesome. Chuck never disappoints. With his dark humor and parallels to just how comical and satire real life is, he attempts and succeeds yet again with a non-fiction novel that makes us feel.....real. His character, though 13 and young and fat and dead, is completely relatable on any level of self honesty. Grade A top choice sirloin of a novel. I simply cannot wait for the next!

Hilarious take on sin. As always Chuck delivers a compelling and darkly funny piece. I found myself sharing excerpts with friends - something I never have done with literature, especially Maddy's "the talk" which is priceless.

Damned. Wizard of Oz goes to hell.

Had higher hopes. Fun concept, slightly repetitive themes towards the end of the book. The ending did not leave me wanting more.

Amazing!. How Chuck managed to channel a 13 year old dead girl is beyond me. All I can say is "thank Satan for Chuck!" I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the next book!

i'm back. i've skipped the last few books by chuck but this one brought me back! a fun entertaining read, for sure!

Pretty bad.... Could have done without all of "creative" Trampy McTrampsalots and all that. Really, it was old after the first one. The book got semi-interesting toward the end, but it wasn't enough to make up for how brutally slow the beginning is.

awful!. This was an awful book...I only finished it because I hate to leave things unfinished but it took me about three weeks when normally I finish books in a day. The overall theme was superficial and repetetive and the ideas were not creative, but somewhat asinine. I definitely don't care about the be continued.

yuck. Sickening and gratuitous. Do not waste your time. I could not finish this mess. A stomach churner as opposed to a page turner.

DAMNED. I was able to get through reading this book in 3 days. That a real big deal for me, counting on the fact that most books I pick up I never finish reading due to boredom. However this book won't leave you board. It's hard to put down. It's good...but it left me unsatisfied in the end. This books is not one of Chucks best I hate to say. However it's widely visual and entertaining in most parts. Go pick up one of his other books preferably " Fight Club", "Diary" or " Invisible Monsters", ( for a GREAT read) before picking this one up if your a new reader to this author. On a high note this book was pretty good for the most part. Granted as wildly entertaining as hell can be , I can't help but wish the book was longer with a different ending. Supposedly our main character Madison Spencer, was supposed to go to heaven instead of hell all along. Even a brief chapter, with a glimpse of heaven through the view point of a 13 years old girl for just one moment would of been interesting if not given a more complete satisfied ending to this book. This is of corse my own opinion. However weather it be the official " ending" of the book of just a cliffhanger? The book COULD be continued into another story completely in itself. As thus it does leave the ending to the reader somewhat hanging. Overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Good read, just don't waste your time getting an expensive copy from your book store as I decided to get the cheaper digital version of it.

A perfect homecoming. I love me some Chuck P. He has been my favorite author for some time now but thanks to college and work, I haven't been able to really read for pleasure in so long that I was a bit wary of actually starting again. I almost didn't buy the book because of a few reviews, but I decided to just go for it. Best. Decision. Ever. This was the perfect fiction and chuck homecoming for me. Palahniuk has crafted a fantastic story, with all the intrigue and mental messiness of Fight Club, as snarky as Invisible Monsters, and nearly as gut churning as Rant. I devoured this book in one sitting, it was so funny and alluring. Madison Spencer is my new favorite narrator, an upbeat chubby 13 year old with a secret and a whole new person waiting to emerge. Sometimes, you have to go to hell and back to find out who you really are. A must read. For anyone.

Semi-entertaining. A semi-entertaining novel. Probably the worst out of the 4 novels of his that I have read. Survivor is still my favorite.

Damned. Good, but he's written better. To be continued is always fun. Worth reading if you're a Chuck fan.

One of my favourite Chuck Palahniuk books. I love this book! It hits all the buttons for me: darkly humorous, suitably shocking and wonderfully written. I rate “Damned” among my top 3 favourite Chuck Palahniuk books.

Good but weighed down. This was a good read but was weighed down by the main characters constant one trick pony 'witty at all costs' personality. The stream of consciousness five page whine fest at the beginning should have tipped me off on how the rest of the book would play out...little bit of action..main characters acerbic witty viewpoint...some plot movement...main characters borderline snotty repetitive descriptors of the scene...and so on and on and on. I like the chuck version of hell and his Neil Gaiman like portrayal of the demons back stories. But I just feel so much more could have been done.

What’s the point.... I desperately wanted to like this book. By page 103, I simply could not force myself to read anymore. I feel like attempting to read this book was a huge disappointment and waste of my time.

Meh. I love Chuck, but this was pretty stupid

Crazy, disturbing and amazing!. I can not wait for part 2!!!

Good easy read. As always his book is a little sickening but that's why we read it right? This was a little repetitive on some accounts but overall I thought it was good. Not my favorite of his but I'm glad I read it.

Meh. After brilliant works like Rant or Diary, Damned seems dialed-in and contrived. A somewhat entertaining read; but, definitely NOT up to the caliber of his other work. Save your money and pick this one up at the library (or on the dollar book rack).
