77 Shadow Street (with bonus novella The Moonlit Mind) by Dean Koontz Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Welcome to the Pendleton. Built as a tycoon’s dream home in the 1880s and converted to luxury condominiums not quite a century later, the Gilded Age palace at the summit of Shadow Hill is a sanctuary for its fortunate residents. Scant traces remain of the episodes of madness, suicide, mass murder—and whispers of things far worse—that have scarred its grandeur almost from the beginning.

But now inexplicable shadows caper across walls, security cameras relay impossible images, phantom voices mutter in strange tongues, not-quite-human figures lurk in the basement, elevators plunge into unknown depths. With each passing hour a terrifying certainty grows: Whatever drove the Pendleton’s past occupants to their unspeakable fates is at work again. And as nightmare visions become real, as a deadly tide begins to engulf them, the people at 77 Shadow Street will find the key to humanity’s future . . . if they can survive to use it.

Includes the bonus novella The Moonlit Mind and an excerpt from Dean Koontz's The City.

Incredible. As a literature major, I've had to read tons of books. No other author in literature can consistently surprise as well as Dean Koontz. Once more, Mr. Koontz has crafted a thrilling tale that grips the reader and never lets go.

Dean Koontz has lost his marbles.. I personally have purchased 21 audiobooks of Dean Koontz, on this very iTunes store. Every book I have purchased that was pre -2000's was amazing, revolutionary, and inspiring. I think Dean has forgotten how to write an actual good Book. Yes, Odd thomas was good, NO Breathless was not good. I think something has changed….he is becoming paranoid, sociopathic, or a life changing event has occurred in his life that the public does not know about because his writing has gone off the deep end. He is like a famous painter in an "experimental" phase that people never understand or appreciate. I want the Koontz back that wrote Intensity, Velocity, Lightiing, Mr. Murder, and the Husband. Not this super off the deep end Koontz who: RE EDITS THE ENDINGS OF BOOKS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A SOUR MOVIE DEAL OR TV SERIES. If I have to listen to ONE more ending of a book with Dean Koontz chiming in telling the story about how "the movie industry ruined my book!" I will stop listening to Koontz all together. No more $80.00 a year audio book contribution…no more spreading the word…NO MORE. Please stop your crazy antics and get back to your NORMAL WRITING STYLE. Maybe take a step back and write ONE BOOK A YEAR. Because, releases the 3 book per year is now really showing….its as if you get an incredible idea, and spend a lot of time on that idea until your deadline approaches….and all of the sudden you say "Screw it…I'm getting paid" and stop caring about the book. IT SHOWS. I realize you're trying to make a living, but seriously…maybe just once tell the book industry to shove it and take all the time you want to really hash out a book that doesn't seem like you lost interest…..for ONCE THIS DECADE.

77 Shadow street. How Mr. Koontz continues to plumb the depths and dark crevices of the mind remains a mystery. With wicked anticipation, his books continue to pull you page after page, deeper into the Alice in Wonderland like world of "What if?" This novel will not only force you to examine the "plausible" future but will drag you deep into the night, swiping away each page with anticipation. Chances are, your reader will lose battery life before you are ready to Put this book down for the night. Enjoy!!

The Moonlit Mind. Immediately engaging characters and plot. My only regret was that it was a novella-I would love to have spent more time with these people and in this place. This novella was a free add-on with 77 Shadow Street, and is a MUCH better read thanatos the book I paie for.

Worst Ever. Awful, boring, waste of time (& $). Only buy if for some silly reason you need to have a full collection of his books, but don't read!

Worst read ever!!!. No plot.....no heroes.....no character to root for.... Probably goes down as one of the worst books I've ever read. Koontz, maybe it's time you retire because if this is all you have left to offer, time to put the pen to rest.

Spooky but Long. The descriptions of the setting and the "monsters" were creepy and excellent! Gave me a good scare! However, the story could have been told in half the pages.

Blake Grisham. This book was mesmerizing. I couldn't put it down!!!! Dean koontz is one of the best authors of our time and this book, to me, is one of his greatest works yet!!!

I. This is the 7th Dean Koontz book I've read. I'm only about halfway done but I think it's awesome. I've always wanted to write a book with multiple point of views set in a hotel and Dean koontz wrote it for me. Except there is a paranormal twist. Some of the charaters are unrealistic, I have to admit. And I laughed at parts that I shouldn't have because the character's ideas were so corrupt and flawed. Like Mickey and Vernon and Fielding. I find it weird that half the characters still stay in the hotel after they've recieved definitive proof that its haunted, but then again, all scary movies are like that. I have to finish the book to know for sure, but so far, this is my 4th favorite Koontz book that I've read. It's the first paranormal one that I've read as well.

Good read by a great author. I have read several of Koontz books and I have enjoyed most of them. This book ranks somewhere in the middle of the the ones that I have read including Watchers, Phantoms, Midnight, The Taking, Darkfall, Dark Rivers of the Heart, The Husband ... list goes on. This book was definitely entertaining and very suspenseful. I would definitely recommend it to a fan of his books. A lot of similarities to Midnight if you ask me. Dean Koontz has a truly amazing imagination. Good read.

77 Shadow Street: Surprisingly bad. I read everything koontz writes and really enjoy his work, usually. He usually has characters that are fragile and strong at the same time. His villains are terrifying, broken, and realistic. So I was stunned by how bad this was. Hi my name is bailey and I see something really scary and weird but I don't run...Hi my name is Sparkle and I see something really scary and weird but I don't run....repeat, repeat, repeat. I don't mind the jumping around from one apartment to the next (even though the sections are too short and too many) but the same thing is happening every time. Most koontz fans will buy it and read it anyway...I did, despite the bad reviews. But you were warned.

Yawn. Definitely not some of Mr Koontz better work. Slow start, too many characters and uneventful ending.

77 Shadow Streets. A klassic Koontz's. Not his best but a good read. Should have had a heroic dog in it!

Not good. The Moonlit Mind was better than 77 Shadow Street. 77 Shadow Street was to confusing.

Waste of time. I've been a Koontz fan since Watchers. I feel like resigning from the club. Tedious, verbose, no humanity, no protagonist to identify with, all apt descriptions. If I hadn't downloaded it, I would have thrown it away- just like one of the characters in the book did!

Don't buy!!!. There was virtually no content, just the same scenario repeated with different characters over and over and over. I found myself skipping through most of the book, stopping only to see if it had improved. It never did. Incredibly poor and boring book!

Dean Koontz at his best!. What a great read! I've read all of Dean's books and this is one of the best! Fast paced, a real page turner. P Douglas

A Great Read. I have read most of Mr. Koontz's novels and this is one is another home run. The connections to earlier novels such as "From The Corner of His Eye" and the "Fear Nothing" series. He eloquently defends the capacity for human's ability to do good while showing how the best intentions may lead to unexpected an severe consequences. The bottom line, there is no such thing as freedom in "perfection", and those that pursue it with the "good of humanity" as a premise are usually suspect. This book is a great addition to the massive tome of work by Dean Koontz.

Not his best work. I'm a huge Koontz fan but this simply is not Dean's best work. Long descriptive narratives to fill space. Not he usual twists and turns and the jacket description does not necessarily describe the true contents of this book. It is a decent read but not what I was expecting or accustomed to reading from Koontz.

Skip it. Normally, I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz. This book, however, was awful. I find that i feel nothing for any of the characters. I honestly don't think I can finish it which is unheard of for me. I don't think it even deserves the one star I'm forced to give.

This was Not Good. Very Not Good. Don't bother

77 shadow street. Good book, would recommend it to friends. A little off the beaten path of his other books, what an imagination!

77ShadowStreet. Loved most Koontz books in the past. This one, not so much. It was tedious and rambling. Stick to formulas that work. Let a dog play a bigger part. Let the dog write the story. Might do a better job.

Very disappointing. One of the few books I decided not to finish. Koontz is hit and miss for me. I have enjoyed several of his Odd Thomas books, and I liked the short novel The Moonlit Mind (which is just barely connected to this story). This had too many characters that you don't want to get to know and the overall plot is boring and unoriginal.

77 Shadow Street. I have been a huge Dean Koontz fan, but this book is terrible. It has a large cast of characters who are introduced through a series of seemingly disconnected brief vignettes. As a result, I found it very difficult to keep them straight. Because of the disjointed way the story is told, it was impossible to develop any connection with any character, and I found that I couldn't care less what happened to any of them. I quit reading this book. Save your money!

Best Koontz in a while. Fast read, great characters, suspensful and unpredictable. At times I forgot I was reading Dean Koontz and thought it was a Stephen King story. Highly recommend for Koontz fan or a Stephen King fan.

77 shadow street. Good read, not his best but still worth it.

Not Worth It. Not the usual Koontz. Rambling, hard to get into. Very disappointing.

Waste of time and money. It’s like he put every character, and monsters in a bag mixed them up and threw them in this book. As a long time fan of Mr. Koontz, I am highly disappointed.

Unlike most Koontz books. While this was a interesting read, I have to admit that I prefer Koontz regular style of writing and mystery. At one point in the book, I truly wonder what in the world was Koontz doing? Had Koontz gone mad? At one point I hated the book. Had I mistakenly started reading a crazy episode of "Star Trek"? I had to continue on. Some chapters seemed to over explain situations, going on and on...at nausia about a object or location, but there was a lot to explain to make it all work. As usual, Koontz managed to bring it all together and deliver it in a pretty box with a ribbon attached.

Too long. The only reason I finished this book is because I paid for it. A total disappointment. I usually enjoy Mr.Koontz's books, but this one was so drawn out to the point of boredom. A few exciting parts, but to little to late.

Most excellent. Another amazing tale from Koontz,..strangely, it is badly reviewed here, probably by people who have been cast under a voodoo spell of sorts no doubt,...this one will keep you up nights and guessing till the end.....well done again Dean! This one deserves some sequels!

Heroes. Dean does it again, making heroes out of the least of us, the children, the dogs, the moms, the afflicted, the people who have seen personal tragedy and have lived through it all, keeping not only their sanity but their integrity. Unlikely heroes all of us. That's why his books are so good. When/ if we are faced with unspeakable horrors in our everyday lives, we'd all like to think we'd be able to react like these people did. He makes us want to live more courageously. Thanks Dean!

Awful, just awful. I thought "yay!" a new Koontz book! I started reading it and thought "wow, this is off to a slow start....but I will give it a chance". I kept reading and thought "this is terribly boring and confusing.....but I will keep giving it a chance". I kept reading and started to think "this is one of the worst books I have ever read.....but I'll keep reading. Surely it will have an awesome ending!" I read to the end and thought "why did he even bother to write this and who told him it was good enough to publish?" A disappointing book all the way around. Don't waste your money. If you really want to read it, get it from your library. Then when you decided to kick it to the curb you won't feel guilty.

77 Shadow Street. This book was a very intriguing, well written excursion into the evil that has permeated so many areas of social life, in government corruption, not just in the US OF AMERICA, but throughout the world. One of the worst crimes being committed is pedophilia and human trafficking. Mr. Koontz, through his extraordinary talent in writing fiction, can expose the truth of how deviate behavior has corrupted so many people in every socio/economic level. These educated people, many born into privileged lives, or who have created ways to amass illegally gained fortunes, believe they are above the majority of humanity. Through their sociopathic/ egocentric thinking they are relentlessly working through government agencies, industries, education, media & entertainment to bring about the enslavement of the majority of the world’s population. I believe this story highlights the evil that is assaulting us today, as Mr. Koontz illustrates in this exceptional work of fiction, by demonstrating thru the thoughts, deeds and actions of the characters herein.

Not good at all. I love Dean but lately it seems that his novels are getting way off line and supernatural. I love ghost stories and love Dean but this book is just filled with pages and pages of fillers. Dean describes and goes into detail way more than needs be. Half way through I started skipping paragraphs because it would take him pages and pages to explain something as simple as an empty room. This book is mostly filled with details the reader doesn't need. It could have been a novella in itself. Dean, please make your next book better.

77 shadow street. I have been a fan, but this was just thrown together. Delete, delete.
