Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell Book Summary
Cranford (1851-1853) es sin duda la obra más popular de Elizabeth Gaskell, escrita a instancias de Dickens, después del éxito conseguido con su primera novela, Mary Barton. El paisaje, la ambientación e incluso los personajes están tomados del pueblecito en que la autora pasó su infancia, Knutsford, y, en un retrato lleno de humor y afecto, pero exento de sensi-blería, se nos presentan unos valores y costumbres que la Revolución industrial estaba transformando rápidamente. A través de la emblemática figura de unas hermanas solteronas, asistimos a los pequeños y grandes acontecimientos de la pequeña comunidad: la llegada de un apuesto capitán viudo y sus dos hijas, las cartas que se reciben de ultramar, las estrecheces económicas de las mujeres de buena sociedad, los compromisos matri moniales y las muertes. Contada en un tono de confidencia íntima, sin esfuerzo aparente, y con un detallado elenco de personajes femeninos observados en profundidad, Cranford es, tanto en palabras de Dickens como de E. M. Forster, «un exquisito retrato social», una obra «tierna» y «deliciosa» que ha sabido mantener su atractivo a través de los años.
