Né pour être roi, il le fut dès l'âge de cinq ans, sous la Régence de sa mère Anne d'Autriche et de son principal ministre le cardinal de Mazarin. C'est à la mort de ce dernier que Louis XIV, âgé de 23 ans, peut enfin prendre lui-même en main les affaires de l'Etat. Malgré tout ce que les historiens lui ont reproché, les dépenses somptuaires de Versailles et de Marly, ses incartades conjugales et la naissance de ses nombreux bâtards, ses augmentations d'impôt sur une population déjà pauvre, malgré les guerres qu'il a du mener pour défendre le territoire français contre l'Espagne notamment, malgré les maladies qu'il affronta stoïquement toute sa vie, malgré son mariage arrangé avec l'espagnole Marie-Thérèse et la mort de tous ses enfants légitimes sauf le Dauphin, Louis XIV n'a eu qu'une seule idée en tête : faire passer l'intérêt de l'Etat avant tout, développer le commerce, l'agriculture, l'industrie, les travaux publics, la marine, réorganiser l'armée, centraliser l'administration, fortifier nos frontières, développer l'architecture et les arts...
On peut dire avec l'académicien Louis Bertrand que Louis XIV fut l'organisateur de la France moderne.
