Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank Book Summary

“An extraordinary real picture of human beings numbed by catastrophe but still driven by the unconquerable determination of living creatures to keep on being alive.” —The New Yorker

The classic apocalyptic novel by Pat Frank, first published in 1959 at the height of the Cold War, with an introduction by award-winning science fiction writer and scientist David Brin.

“Alas, Babylon.” Those fateful words heralded the end. When the unthinkable nightmare of nuclear holocaust ravaged the United States, it was instant death for tens of millions of people; for survivors, it was a nightmare of hunger, sickness, and brutality. Overnight, a thousand years of civilization were stripped away.

But for one small Florida town, miraculously spared against all the odds, the struggle was only just beginning, as the isolated survivors—men and women of all ages and races—found the courage to come together and confront the harrowing darkness.

Alas , Babylon. Alas, Babylon has been one of my favorite books for many, many years. My Dad, who worked in the defense industry, handed me a copy in the 1960s; though I have a hardcover, I could not resist an e-book! I've just re- read it again and it is as wonderful as ever.... A book to last the ages, just change the names of the countries at war in your mind, if need be! The story will remain solid. However, you need to fix the typos!! I know the book, I've read it many times before! I groaned every time I came on a typo that I easily deciphered! Someone who doesn't know this book may turn away!

A mid century Cold War classic, but.... seriously marred by what I consider an unreasonably high price ($11.99, really?) and a rather large number of distracting typos that should have been easily caught by proof reading (not just relying on "spell check" as was obviously done here). Older books like this shouldn't be "full price" for digital versions, and this should be re-issued with a typo-corrected update.

The ultimate. I have read many apocalyptic novels, this was one of my top 3.

Masterful Work. Credible and inspiring. A thoroughly entertaining and informative read.

Go back in time to the day.... Go back in time to the gay the book was written. You will find that the book is very good, and that is an understatement. Coming forward to our day much of what was written in this book is still very relevant to any conflict that would involve nuclear weapons. So if you take out the bad guy of Russia and insert whoever would use nuclear weapons against the US the story is perfectly logical and relevant.

Good Storyline w/ Some Issues. I had to read this book for school. There was a good storyline and it was generally interesting. However, there were an enormous amount of typos and errors through the whole book. I'm not sure if this had to do with downloading the book on iTunes or not, but it was annoying to read with all these issues.

Required reading for sci fi buffs!. Read this and see themes that continue to inform the body of science fiction we have now. Disappointed in the quality of this edition. So many typographical errors. This story deserves better.

Fantastic book, but the e-version has many typos. I'm so happy to have discovered this great story of hope and the enduring spirit of Americans. The topic is as current now as ever. While they do not diminish the story, the numerous typographical errors in this electronic version should be corrected out of respect to the author.
