The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker Book Summary

Instant New York Times Bestseller

“Unimpeachably terrific.” —The New York Times Book Review

For fans of Ruth Ware, Shari Lapena, and Donna Tartt: a twisty, fast-paced, cinematic literary thriller, and an ingenious book within a book, by the #1 internationally bestselling author of The Enigma of Room 622

Marcus Goldman is riding high. The twenty-eight-year-old writer is the new darling of American letters, whose debut novel has sold two million copies. But when it comes time to produce a new book, he is sidelined by a crippling case of writer’s block. He travels to Somerset, New Hamprshire, to see his mentor, Harry Quebert, one of the country’s most respected writers, hoping to jar his creative juices as his publisher’s deadline looms. But Marcus’s plans are upended when Harry is sensationally implicated in a cold-case murder: Fifteen-year-old Nola Kellergan went missing in 1975, and Harry admits to having had an affair with her. Following a trail of clues through the backwoods and isolated beaches of New Hampshire, Marcus must answer two questions, which are mysteriously connected: Who killed Nola Kellergan? And how do you write a book to save someone’s life?

Translated from the French by Sam Taylor

Named a Best Book of the Summer by CBS This Morning, Us Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Parade, Houston Chronicle, New York Post, Tampa Bay Times, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and The Daily Beast

Now a 10-part TV series on EPIX, starring Patrick Dempsey, Ben Schnetzer, Damon Wayans Jr., and Virginia Madsen

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. Awesome! Great book, great characters and once you begin you can’t stop.

A Work of Art. A work of art.

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. Weird with gratuitous twists and turns.

Dreck. Mr. Dicker has managed to write one of the worst books I have encountered in 65 years of reading. The basic plot line—a 34 year old man engaged in a love affair with a 15 year girl—is, in itself, revolting. Thankfully, he did not include a sexual component in the relationship, presumably to forestall his prosecution for what he had written. He compounds the pedophilic theme by weaving a yarn nest of wandering narrative back and forth in bits and pieces covering a 33 year period. The writing is trite. Many of the factual premises are completely untenable. And the absolutely mystifying fawning inclusion of the Obama election, bearing no relation to the plot, is truly bizarre. I admit, however, reading it to the end in order to leave a review in the hope that it will discourage others from wasting their time and money on it. Dreck. Pure dreck….

Not his best work. Disappointing. Just not his best work.

Child's Play. This book has a convoluted and barely-believable plot but worse, it feels like it was written by a talented 12- year old. The breathless dialogue and the stilted narrative style make it feel like this is a young -- very young -- adult novel. I even went back to the publisher's notes to see if perhaps it was intended for young audiences, but apparently not. I didn't get it. You shouldn't.

Research?. I've only read 150 pages so far, and I know this is petty, but prison and jail are not the same! Shouldn't a book about a writer, who is writing a book, be well researched? I get it, it's a quick summer read, but still...

Enjoyable. Loved this book- had me guessing all the way to the end! Slow start, but once it picks up it hooks you.

Disappointing. I found this book was poorly written. It has a lot of unnecessary repetition, insincere dialogue, and ridiculous plot twists. The plot twists in this books are not based of previous "hints", they are based on "never mind, what you have been reading was all a lie...". I found the book unnecessarily long and frustrating.

Soaks into your cells. Love stories. Many of them. Friendship, once in a lifetime love, love of writing. Mystery woven throughout. Couldn't put it down. No one could predict the ending.

Excellent read!. This book was put together so well it gave me new inspiration to never stop writing. Definitely looking for more books from the author! I didn't want the book to end!

Harry Quebert Affair. Awesome.

Great Read. I bought this book having my doubts. After finishing it I am glad I bought it, the book is great. The book will keep guessing the whole time. I couldn't put it down.

WOW. This book was intense. Loved it!!

The Truth.. A good read, but the ending is extremely complicated. So many herrings, and all of them red.

Best Book In Ages. Highly recommend. A roller coaster ride of a story. Very different . LOVED IT!

It Started Very Well. The first half of the book has a fast pace while the sencond consists of multiple attempts to keep the reader interested “wait, but there is more!”. Overall good book but don’t see why it is considered great. The Good: - valuable thougts on running - vauable thoughts on writing and developing a personality - the initial idea on writng about writing - evolution of the main charcter, his sense of humor - depiction of an American small town atmosphere (my personal fav) The bad: - the killer was too obvious from the start, sorry - multiple twist and turns at the end, at least 10 chapters added to the spot where book was supposed to end. Was the editor demandng a certain amounf of pages, I was asking myself reading - some of the characters are simply too dull, where it could be more, yet it starts so well: Harry himself, Luther, Nola…

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. Good character development, and when you read the last page and put the book down, you really care about the characters in the book and you wonder what will become of them and you miss them already.

Great read. A wonderful book! Fast paced and surprising!! Loved it!

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair. I have always known that a great book leaves you sad when it ends. And so I am left, desolate and forlorn, by the end of this gripping tale. Its compelling characterizations and clever plot development held me prisoner for two days. Its twists and surprises leaves me wondering if it is really over. It is a superb first novel. Jonathan Franzen should be scared....

Great Read. This is one of if not the best book I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. I didn’t just read it. I lived with the characters, ran with Harry in the mornings, felt for his love to be as she watched him love another. And the ending WOW. This is a must read for anyone over the age of 25.

Great summer read!. Great summer book, full of twists and turns! Loved reading a murder mystery in which each and every character is a suspect!!
