Marchen by E.L. Doctorow Book Summary

E.L. Doctorow (1931-) er en af de mest prisbelønnede amerikanske forfattere. Han står bl.a. bag de anmelderroste bøger Ragtime, Billy Bathgate og Homer og Langley. Hans romaner bygger i fri fiktion på historiske begivenheder, og flere af dem er filmatiseret.
I 1864, efter at have nedbrændt Atlanta, førte unionsgeneral William Tecumseh Sherman sine tres tusind mand øst gennem Georgia ud til havet og derefter op til South og North Carolina. På den lange march bekæmpede hæren sydstatstropperne og levede af det, de kunne skaffe sig på vejen. De plyndrede plantager, stjal kvæg og afgrøder og ødelagde byer, mens en større og større mængde af frigjorte slaver samt hvide flygtninge sluttede sig til dem. I Marchen tages læseren med ind i mylderet af de mange forskellige mennesker, der marcherede. Karakterlisten er lang og inkluderer både sorte og hvide, mænd, kvinder og børn, unionstilhængere og rebeller, generaler og menige, frigjorte slaver og slaveejere. Centralt i fortællingen står general Sherman, den smukke frigjorte slavepige Pearl, militærlægen oberst Sartorius, Emily Thompson – den fordrevne datter af en sydstatsdommer samt de to dømte soldater Arly og Will. I E.L. Doctorows kraftfulde og medfølende beskrivelse bliver den lange march en slags flydende verden med en nomadisk bevidsthed.
Marchen har vundet Pen/Faulkner-prisen og The National Book Critics Circle-prisen og var desuden finalist til Pulitzerprisen.
