Joaquim Manuel de Macedo (1820-1882) foi médico, jornalista, deputado, historiógrafo, dramaturgo e romancista. É considerado um dos fundadores do romance na literatura brasileira.
As Mulheres de Mantilha, publicado pela primeira vez em 1870, é o retracto incontornável do Rio de Janeiro da época, quando se tornara a capital do Brasil.
Ali se abordam os quatro anos de terror, vividos pelos habitantes da cidade, causada pelos excessos do vice-rei, Antônio Álvares da Cunha (conde da Cunha), que governou despoticamente com extorsões, atentados contra a liberdade, contra a propriedade, coacção e imposição de trabalho escravo nas obras públicas. Tudo isso sem que a população tivesse direito à queixa, considerado um crime.
À margem dos fatos políticos, Manuel de Macedo alude com audácia a leviandade da prostituição e a traição.
