Joyland by Stephen King Book Summary

A STUNNING  NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME!

The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever.

"I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, we’re going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book." –Stephen King

Stephen King does it again. I just loved this story! Not his scariest but like The Stand, which is one of my favorites, his characters and story line made me wish for more. He is turning into a softie and I love it.

Joyland. Enjoyable book, feeds the soul of your youth. Intertwines all humanly emotions. Stephen King is a fabulous writer.

Great Read. As always Stephen King puts the reader into the pages of the book. Great backdrop for a murder mystery. Really enjoyed the story.

Great Read. This was a great book to read by a great author definitely one of Kings best.

Boring. A slow melodic story that every really got going.

Must Read. This is a must read! Loved this book.

Life is tough. Being handicapped doesn’t stop life but makes each moment more precious. Life will go on but memories last and last.

The King. Its been a while now since I enjoyed a read as much as I did this one . King is a master of weaving with words, a wonderful and mesmerizing carpet ride into fantasy!

A Fun Read. Great summer read, took me right back to being 21 in way only King can do.

Cannot recommend, not King’s best work.. It started ok then it just became lazy. Probably my least favorite Stephen King book I’ve read to be quite honest. I was planning on reading another King book but now I think I’ll go back to non-fiction to get the bad taste in my mouth. Good grief.

Joyland. Another oage turner from the master. Couldn't put it down. Thanks Mr. King!

Spooky, but full of hope. One of my all time favorites of SK’s. The main character is so highly developed and likable, yet normal. Spooky, not scary, with enough supernatural thrown in to make it fun. Couldn’t put it down.

Not a 'Mystery' or much of a 'Thriller'. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy this book, but what it's mostly about is a kid working at an amusement park and his inner thoughts that summer and fall. The story is 90% "Devin got up, took a shower, etc." There is no mystery to solve or even speculate on. The 'suspenseful' part takes up maybe 2 pages, if that. And using the word 'suspenseful' to describe this story's climax is about the same as calling Winnie the Pooh, 'a terrifying, gripping story of love and betrayal...' This is not a bad book, but it's not at all what it packaged as or advertised to be.

Loved it. Stephen King can tell a story like no one else.

Joyland. One of S. King's best in recent years. Love the setting at a carnival. Interesting characters. A mystery, crime novel and ghost story, all rolled in one.

Carnival Murder Mystery. This is great for someone wanting a little spooky without actual horror. It's a murder mystery and sort of a coming of age tale. I got into it. It has that eerie feeling like something is coming throughout and is pretty good storytelling in my opinion, kind of feels like a longer version of camp side ghost story.

Loved this Kjng with different style great story. It’s a great story a different style fun and silky in places. Sad and lonely in others. Another great King to add to library. I have a lot

Freaky!!!. I got it because my friend works at Titan publishing and got me a book. It is downright awesome and spooky.. And trust me... It's not a joy land.

Sentimental Memoir. This is a good book if you want a feel-good memoir of a college student's summer break. If you want mystery, horror, creepiness like I did - you will get none.

Not King’s Best. This book is definitely not one of KIng’s best. The first half, or hundred pages or so, is pretty uneventful and not an interesting read unless one has a keen interest in the carnival life, or carny folk. The second half is more engaging, where the story gets more interesting and the reader meets some colorful characters, even if some of these characters i.e. Mike the wheelchair kid, seem borrowed from some B 80s horror movie. The ending when the mystery is solved didn’t really satisfy me either and again seemed borrowed from an earlier era. All in All I’d advise another reader to sit this one out.

Great book. A great story with great characters

A superb read. If you don’t shed a tear with the reading of this novella, then I feel sorry for you. I had a hard time putting it down and sorry that it ended. Maybe a movie can bring this to life. Of course I am an avid King reader and will continue to be.

Spooky & Bittersweet. Mr King comes through again with a mildly spooky tale of a cold case solved and justice (such as it is ) served. One thing I have always enjoyed about Mr King’s work is his ability to “put you there” without overusing and over-describing the scence. In this book, he really shines and is able to evoke the appropriate feeling while remaining concise and on the point. Mega Kudos and I highly recommend this book.

Short but sweet. I wanted more. Bah, humbug but you've spoiled us, Mr. King. I know it's tougher to write a great short story or novella like this than a Novel with a big "N." But this was such a sweet and edgy story...just wanted more. Thanks for this bon-Bon, though...

So good.. Straight to the heart. Stephen King is a master. I loved this book and am sad the story ended. It was that good.
