The Gone World Book Reviews
The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch Book Summary
Inception meets True Detective in this science fiction thriller of spellbinding tension and staggering scope that follows a special agent into a savage murder case with grave implications for the fate of mankind...
“I promise you have never read a story like this.”—Blake Crouch, New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter
Shannon Moss is part of a clandestine division within the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. In western Pennsylvania, 1997, she is assigned to solve the murder of a Navy SEAL's family—and to locate his vanished teenage daughter. Though she can't share the information with conventional law enforcement, Moss discovers that the missing SEAL was an astronaut aboard the spaceship U.S.S. Libra—a ship assumed lost to the currents of Deep Time. Moss knows first-hand the mental trauma of time-travel and believes the SEAL's experience with the future has triggered this violence.
Determined to find the missing girl and driven by a troubling connection from her own past, Moss travels ahead in time to explore possible versions of the future, seeking evidence to crack the present-day case. To her horror, the future reveals that it's not only the fate of a family that hinges on her work, for what she witnesses rising over time's horizon and hurtling toward the present is the Terminus: the terrifying and cataclysmic end of humanity itself.
Luminous and unsettling, The Gone World bristles with world-shattering ideas yet remains at its heart an intensely human story.

The Gone World. Brilliant. Reminiscent of “Annihilation”. A mind bending mystery thriller.
One of the best. One of the most compelling novels I’ve read in recent years. The writing is excellent, save for a sex scene that has some “man writing women” awkwardness. Overall, I highly recommend it.
The kitchen sink, the bathroom sink, and everything else. I love books about time travel, alternate universes, the multi-verse, the whole genre. This book was interesting and entertaining, but as it went on, it became WAY too dense. It’s like the author was trying to cram in every possible scenario of the genre into one book. Three-quarters of the way through I was thinking “Is this ever going to end?” Finally, I just started skimming the pages, determined to finish it and move on. Great concept, and well written, but it could have been pared down significantly. And I mean, like seriously - a lot.
Too confusing. I was lost about half way through the book. It's wicked confusing. By the end I was just skimming to try to get to the end of this convoluted, sordid tale. Really sorry I spent $15 on it.
A tangled web. Not like anything I’ve read before! The main characters personalities are always radically changing as Moss travels different time lines. Friend or foe, which will it be this time? She has to adapt to each as she tries to save Earth. Wonderful story telling.
Heavy. A walk into a nightmare that spans time and space. As much a story of horror as it is about possible futures. Hard to digest the explicit scenes of carnage, but you won’t want to stop reading…
Good, fast read. I read this book on a long drive home. Some parts lost me, but I still enjoyed the book. I am a fan of time travel in general, but this book explored new ways to envision it.
Amazing. This books is a fast entertaining read, it’s a book I read years ago and still can’t stock thinking about, it doesn’t absolutely stick the ending, but the journey is incredible and the ending is satisfying.
Wow. Considered a five star, but not quite AC Clark, but well on his way! Please keep writing! And do read this my sci fi friends!!!
Good but…. Great writing Tom’s character and story development we’re top notch. Without giving anything away Tom seemed to really understand his protagonist and her deficiencies. Now for the bad part, after everything that took place the ending was a little weak. It lacked something, like he mashed it together to hurry up and end the book. And the epilogue, it didn’t make a lot of sense me. Again don’t want to give anything away but, how did this happen? And what about the footsteps? And it’s seems like she has a lifetime of mistakes ahead of her. Anyway, I’m preparing to buy another of his books because he’s that good a writer.
