Disappointed. This book had so much potential!!! In those first couple chapters I was so interested & then it just got stupid & unrealistic. But what really got me was the annoying use of endearment “sugar”. It was over kill! Disappointed.

A sweet, heartfelt, messy, emotional read. I just finished this book, and...wow. Five stars all the way! Written with sensitivity, raw emotion, depth, and realism. Life is messy, and emotions are real — I think the author captured that in this book.... where bad things happen to good people, and the fallout/regrets haunt. Pain and fear, and learning to cope with PTSD/panic situations. It changes everything, but both Cam and Jenna find a way together, amidst their pain. Both strong, both very talented/renowned in their fields. Jenna is a good person - sassy, feisty, and independent - but choices she’s made in her past have had painful consequences and a manipulator from her past is out to hurt her. Cam is deeply scarred too, from a really messy relationship, and from his military service, and a family secret that comes to light. Their story evolves with staggering events and surprises and ends with a beautiful HEA. Loved it!

An emotional journey worth taking. What an emotional journey...this book takes on. Love the characters connection, and how their relationship grows.. Each milestone they make, the steps forward or backwards, they are real! This book shows there isn’t an instant answer, but they characters found theirs

Brilliant. Alexa Padgett is such a talented writer! So much happens in such a short time but it’s all so brilliantly written. Jenna & Camden are such messed up yet very relatable characters who face the world as best as they can. So much emotion in their story, loved every word. Recommend to all

Beautiful but broken. Deep in the Heart An Austin After Dark Book #1 Alexa Padgett Jenna a beautiful but broken young woman has wicked guitar making skills. She oozes talent but due to past trauma is very nervous and introverted. She makes beautiful instruments in her Pop-Pop’s shop, world famous. Cam is a hunky war-vet country musician with issues of his own. He often doesn’t play nice with others and has a short fuse. The nightmares and flashbacks don’t help. Underneath is a kindhearted, gifted soul who just needs to believe both he and Jenna are worthy of love. Jenna:”I didn’t do this connection thing anymore. I kept people at arm’s length- or further. Bat length more like it.” Jenna is a familiar character for those who have read all of Ms Padgett’s novels and it is great she gets to tell her story. While this is the first in a spinoff series it can be read as a stand-alone novel with hea. I received an arc of this book.
