胡適如此評論《鏡花緣》:「……李汝珍所見的是幾千年來忽略了的婦女問題。他是中國最早提出這個婦女問題的人,他的《鏡花緣》是一部討論婦女問題的小說。他對於這個問 題的答案是,男女應該受平等的待遇,平等的教育,平等的選舉制度。」
許多人會將《鏡花緣》想像成是另一本與《紅樓夢》類似的閨中鏡花水月般的小說;但事實不然,《鏡花緣》其實是一部「才學小說」。根據魯迅在《中國小說史略》中的說法「清之以小說見才學者」
《鏡花緣》除了冒險歷程,其中還包括了音韻學、醫方藥劑、算學、物理學、經學、史學、水利學、各類酒令、文字遊戲、琴藝、琴技、音樂、馬弔、雙陸、投壺、射箭、狀元籌等等古典才藝,再加上對各種花卉草木的植栽知識亦多有涉略。凡種種項目繁多,令人眼花撩亂。每提及一個項目,無不深究詳解,於是在閱讀之餘,尚有獲取知識之樂。這是歷來其他清代小說所不及之處。

《鏡花緣》自完成之後,歷年來有多種版本出現,目前流通較廣者有所謂嘉慶廿二年(一八一七年)初刻本的江寧桃紅鎮坊刻本,以及嘉慶廿三年的蘇州原刊本,而本書內文採用的便是以嘉慶廿三年(一八一八年)的蘇州原刊本為依據。
