Love It!. Alaina did an amazing job creating a scene with words. I could picture this entire book in my head, I could hear the bayou screaming and feel immersed into this world. An eventful read from beginning to end!

Feel cheated. I have never felt so cheated by a book! I thought what was there of the book was good for the most part, but it seems like the author got tired of the story and just gave up. First of all, for the price of this book I was surprised it only had 199 pages. I thought, if that means it doesn’t have the mindless details some books can have just to fill pages then okay. Turns out that should have been a red flag. The story was moving along fine and then wham, it’s done with an unbelievably incomplete ending. Not even a good cliff hanger type of ending that makes me want the follow up book, if that’s what the ending is supposed to be. I enjoyed the book until that point and now I’m just annoyed I wasted the time and money on this book. I don’t usually write reviews on anything, but I’m so disappointed with this book that I feel like I have to. This was my first book with this author and will definitely be my last.

Thrilling,. I truly don’t think there was a moment in this book where I was bored. I often times feel as if I have to force myself to read through the beginning chapters of a book filled with backgrounds of the characters, just to get to what may be the good part of a book. However, Alaina, you killed it. You wrote this book to be interesting at every corner and gave me just enough curiosity in every chapter to keep me reading. Every character had a buildup of their background and personalities all the way until the last page. I loved to watch the development of characters emerge along side the horror and thrill of the current timeline. I have been a big fan of your podcast morbid for years and was nervous to read a book from someone I thoroughly enjoy from a different source of entertainment. But girrrrrrrrrrrllll, you killed it (no pun intended). So so so happy to see your dreams come true and I am beyond relieved that this book is great because I didn’t want to have to skip any future butcher of the wren talks on the podcast lol Great job! And I seriously can’t wait for your second book. You betcha I’m preordering that one. Cheers!

Couldn’t put it down!. I couldn’t wait to get my signed copy in the mail. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down! I read more than half the book in one sitting last night, finishing it. At times I was a little confused about whether I was reading present day or past events, but I think that was maybe the intention. The ending was decent, but very abrupt. You wait for Wren to find the butcher throughout the entire book and then once she does it feels as though the book just ends. I would love for a second book to come out! Alaina is a great writer and I enjoyed this book a lot. I was sad when I finished it.

Book of the decade. Wow….. amazing work!! The author has a beautiful mind that she is able to portray to her audience through words. With every sentence, I felt like I was right next to Wren, (the butcher too- but eww f that guy), or running through the swampland myself. Beautiful work! Must read!!!

The Butcher and the Wren. I was very disappointed with this book. It literally ended in the middle of the story. You might as well advertise it as costing $26.00 because you will have to pay that to see how it ends. I would not recommend to my friends.

A true crime listeners perfect read!. I was hesitant at first to purchase because of some of the negative reviews. I realized the only reason there were negative reviews was due to being annoyed that there isn’t a second book yet. That obviously means it’s bound to be a great read if people are yearning for more to come. I love Morbid, listening to true crime, and suspenseful books, and this really hit all the boxes for me. I could barely set the book down!

I couldn’t put it down!!. I’ve been listening to Morbid since their first episode came out more than a few years ago and religiously listen! I love the both of them like friends, they keep me entertained while I work gardening ❤️ THIS BOOK THOUGH!!!! WOW!!! I couldn’t put it down and finished within a few days. It had me from page one, story is perfect, the twists and turns are spot on, and Alaina did so good at describing everything that I felt like I was watching a movie. hands down one of the best books I’ve read recently and I hope there’s more!! highly recommend 👏

I need more!!!. I love the podcast Morbid and when I heard that Alaina had written a book I was immediately down to read it. It kept me captivated and when I turned the page and there was nothing left I was so disappointed. I wanted there to be more and can’t wait for the next one.

Pleasantly surprised but it’s a short read. Enjoyed the story but do feel $13.99 for 381 pages is high and should have been either longer or less expensive.

Eh..:/. I was hoping for a lot since I LOVE the podcast but was not impressed sadly.. I felt like it was a show script with serial killer facts dropped randomly and a rip off ending.. I won’t buy the next book sadly

Weirdo here…. Fan of the pod….. book solid for a first attempt- found the transition between the past and present a bit ham fisted….had to reread theses bits a few times. A bit too fast, not a lot a character development. Read it it one sitting. There will definitely be sequels….left wide open.

AMAZING!!!. I am a huge fan of the podcast so of course I read Alaina’s book immediately. I didn’t have super high expectations (I mean, just because she’s a great podcaster doesn’t mean she’ll be a great writer) but WOW, I was blown away. Literally enthralled until the very end. I don’t love cliff hangers but I know this isn’t the end of Wren’s story and I can’t wait to see what Alaina gives us next!

Love. I have been a Morbid fan since August of 2021. I have caught up and am completely obsessed with Alaina and Ash. I knew as soon as I heard about this book that I needed to read it. I just finished it on the balcony of Bourbon Orleans on a beautiful breezy Monday night. I am captured by the amazing imagery and writing from Alaina and completely stunned by the story. I cannot wait for what will come next! A must must read. A great twist, an amazing protagonist and a killer that is both terrifying and interesting.

Already hooked!. I just read the sample and CANNOT wait to get my hands on the whole book! Alaina writes so eloquently and I already see her as the face of Wren!

Absolutely Must Read. I could not put the book down once I started. As a fellow weirdo and lover of the podcast I must say this book far exceeded my expectations. Clunky writing. Couldn’t even finish the same. Very clunky, awkward writing. An excessive use of adjectives and doesn’t seem to have been edited as thoroughly as it should have been before being published

Did not enjoy. Typical bad formula, of course the murderer has ties to the main character. Overly descriptive of mundane things. No investment in character development. Very unsatisfactory ending, just setting up for next book, which I will not buy,

Big NOPE!. I don’t know this podcaster, but I did NOT like this book. I kept reading because I bought it; just like you keep eating a bad meal because you ordered it. Not a page turner. No personal relationship storyline. She was married and he was barely mentioned. The ending felt as if the author got tired and gave up - boom - done. Not everything has to be a happy ending, but this was garbage.

10/10. I gasped out loud multiple times. A very well written page turner. Can’t wait for book 2!

AMAZING!. This book… this book had me in the first chapter. Suspense, horror, gore, some comedy if you have a odd sense of humor like myself. Absolutely amazing! I could not put this book down! Highly recommend to my fellow crime loving readers.

Amazing!. I am an avid listener of Morbid and have been dying to read this book! It will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout ever twist and turn. All I can say is amazing Alaina! I can’t wait for the next one so please hurry so I can continue with Wrens story.

Stick to podcasting. I got this book because I genuinely enjoy listening to Morbid, but this felt like I was reading a story on Wattpad, and not a good one. I had an open mind going in, read the reviews, and everyone said they loved it. I now believe those were just mindless followers without a single critical thought. I think one of the main reasons why books are good are due to character development. This book has none of that. You get thrown into this intense thriller and have no idea who these people are. You know what’s happened to the main girl, but other than that situation you have no idea who these characters really are. The author focuses on being extra verbose anytime she describes anything and everything. The cliffhanger is probably the worst part of this story. You’re left feeling unsatisfied and unfulfilled - because nothing gets resolved. The book felt as if I was watching a low budget horror movie. The only part I did enjoy were the autopsy parts because that is the authors expertise and she was able to articulate and illustrate the process in a descriptive and alluring manner. I’ll continue to listen to Morbid but I’m going to hard pass on her future writings.

:(. I love morbid but unfortunately agree with a lot of the reviews- the ending felt like a cheap set up for a second book. Random, no resolution, abrupt and drops the reader off during a stressful situation that felt extremely unsatisfying. Basically how I felt when Dexter ended IYKYK. the timeline was slightly hard to follow too as there was a shift in time of what, 7 years? And it wasn’t clearly stated in a way that felt like a clean transition

Bombbbbb book. I do not have much time to read. I work full time, have a side hustle, I’m a mom and a wife. With that being said, I’m a big fan of Morbid, so I decided I’d finally get around to reading this book on a day my kiddo was sick. Oh. My. Goddddd! I couldn’t put it down. I read it in 2 days. I cannot wait for the next book !!!

Excellent Read. An inquisitive and fascinating read. Discovering this book was like discovering fire for the very first time. It elicits emotions and warrants you to keep turning the page. I quite literally couldn’t set it down.

Great for her first book. Thought it was really great for her very first book ever written and published. Some spelling and grammatical errors throughout. Thought it could have been polished a little more but still a great read!!

Amazing. This book had many twists and turns and was everything I had expected to come from Alaina, being a Morbid fan. You could easily see the true parts of herself and life shining through in the details and the book was amazing. I would read this again, and I can’t wait for the next one.
