The Average American Male by Chad Kultgen Book Summary

“I can’t figure out if this book is a heart-felt dispatch from the front line in the battle of the sexes or a brilliant send-up of the way in which the male point of view has been misrepresented by militant feminists. I suspect it may be both.” --Toby Young, New York Times bestselling author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People

An offensive, in-your-face, brutally honest and completely hilarious look at male inner life and sexual fantasy. In the course of this hilariously honest book, our narrator suffers through a relationship with his wannabe-actress girlfriend until he finds the perfect girl. But when he moves into the new relationship, he slowly realizes he thinks that all women are pretty much the same, that his true desires will never be fulfilled, and the decision between living life alone or biting the marriage bullet must be made.

Warped. This guy has one hell of an imagination! Raunchy! And a bit unimaginative. I think the author could have done better.

Interesting. Good enough read.

A new favorite. As you read this book, you will likely think of American Psycho, or maybe Fight Club. Maybe of any other book that has so perfectly managed to to examine a disassociated male struggling to find meaning or direction in his life. That's not a bad thing at all though. While Kultgen's influences are apparent, he has a strong voice of his own. Some may write this off as shallow, or perhaps vulgar for the sake of simple shock value, but this story was compelling and the narrator's occasionally subtle internal struggles hit home a little more than I'd care to admit. If you came for the title, then read it. You won't be disappointed.

True tail. This is a store about life, women and how things really are dirty truth I enjoyed this read. I found myself laughing, angry and agreeing with the story amazing.

More than average!!!!. Funny, sarcastic, erotic, vulgar, entertaining, alarming, GREAT read!

Average American Male. I can't recall too many novels that I have read where I end up really disliking the main character - this is one. The main character is pretty pathetic, self absorbed, unintelligent, and immature. It would have been nice to see him grow rather than have his epiphany be the realization that his life cannot be a daily sex-fest. I was pretty disappointed.

The Average American Male. In reality, this is a three star piece of work. But, the truthfulness, read brutal of how guys think and behave was awesome! No, your not defective, perverted, or otherwise a mutant. Jacking off is normal, as are the things you do or want to do to your girlfriend. The timeline of a relationship rings true, as does the reflexive nature for guys to say they love the girls that love them, when they really don't. Most women will find this vile and repulsive. Those that don't will make great girlfriends. Those that do, wash their hair with Pert shampoo (read the book).

Average American male. Fun from start to end, laugh out loud...and occasionally let out a gasp...don't miss this one!

Ugh. This is the worst book I've ever read. It did nothing for me but made me doubt my faith in humanity. I know for a fact this is not what the average American male is like. The book should rather be titled The Scum of the Earth. It literally made me mad and I continued reading it only to make sure that the "protagonist" would end up in misery. I'm sad I wasted $2 on this book because I don't want it to reach anymore success than it already has.

A funny read. Just from the preview I knew that this book would become a quick favorite of mine. I just can't stop reading this book, and that says a lot because I hate reading big, long books. Although, I must warn you, there are many adult situations and twice as many cuss words so if you're up for that kind of stuff, like me, then this is the right book for you. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend.

Hilarious!!. Very Vulgar but funny and true to some degree. Entertaining and recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good laugh.

Author=miserable. Well...lets just say, I hope this book isn't a reflection of "The Average American Male"!

One of the best ever!. Wow! This book has become one of my favorites of all time! Awesome!

Seriously?!. The author basically writes a letter of apology to his Mother at the end of the book. He should've included anyone who purchased the book as well!

Easy and enjoyable read. Not being much of a reader I hesitated purchasing but with great reviews I figured it was worth the price. As others stated it is a very easy read. The character is very relatable which helps you buy into the story no romantic vampires.. Or any other make believe. All in all good book and a very easy read that can help you take you're mind of things for a few hours.

Wasn't what I expected. All I can say is eh...this book strikes me as a view into something a typical male would think about in any given day. Starts out interesting, but quickly devolves into a tale of "how do I get this b---h to have sex with me?" Over and over again. I'm a guy and this book leaves me with a certain distaste in my mouth for being male and wondering, is this all there is...? Glad I didn't pay but 1.99 for this tale. After the first 10 chapters, I should've stopped reading, but felt I had too much invested to stop.

You Get What You Pay For. Sure the uncensored aspect of the writing may be entertaining in the beginning but the overall product is mostly underwhelming. Congratulations on the quirky vulgarity. Bravo on catering to the lowest common denominator and cheers to having this waste of time be only .99!

Meh. The book made me laugh at parts, but the overall message of the story isn't that great. I was disappointed with the ending, but I would still recommend it for the interesting insight it gave into the male psyche. (Although I'm sure this perspective is a bit of an exaggeration... At least I hope so!)

really entertaining. I thought this book was awesome. i couldn't stop reading it, I'm pretty sure I read this in about 2 days. I thought the book was based on true events from the authors life, I was disappointed when I saw at the end that it was fiction. nonetheless it was a really entertaining book. definitely going to be reading more of your books man! keep up the great writing.

Funny beginning/dumb ending. At first I thought the main character was funny but then I realized how pathetic he really was. Way too crass for my taste and the one dimensionality of characters and their lives can be summed up by a 50 cent song. Entertaining at some points, but for the most part disappointing.

Entertaining. I am a 48 year old female, who totally enjoyed the book, yes it is crude, but hysterically funny!!

Picked it up, and couldn't put it down!. I simply loved this story line… Details… Emotions… it's all put out there for your imagination to rebuild. The storyline is just seamless, simply a great read… Bravo!

Nice change of pace. This story is such an easy read. I literally stayed up to finish the last half of the book tonight because I got pulled into it so deeply.

Quality. This book is freaking hilarious! Definitely not for all ages or for all people. Get the sample before you buy if you are sensitive to "F" bombs. If not purchase ASAP!!!

Brutally hilarious. This book is extremely funny throughout its entirety. It's a bit crude, but the fact that it reflects the thoughts of most average men makes it all the more worthwhile reading. It's a quick, easy read that you won't want to put down.

Rude, crude, and immature!. All three of those things will make you laugh. Quick read that was hard to put down.

18 year old.. I'm 18 years old so this may be a bit of a different standing point then from some, but I read this off and on and finished it in 3 days. It's a fantastic read but I think it definitely appeals to men. It's very vulgar, in your face, and though exaggerated, it is truthful at times as well.

A Joy to Read!!!. The Average American Male was a joy to read, it made me laugh often and I did not want to put it down! I believe it's very relatable to many "average American males!" Also, being from the area where it was from hit home in many ways! I give it 5 stars and plan on reading all of his books!

I laughed out loud. Well worth the read. I couldn't put this funny little gem down. The main character treats the girls like crap, it's not a life map...... just be in it for the laughs. I didn't really think it would end the way it did....that was kind of a let down, but as a whole it was a pretty good read.

Average is a bit of a misnomer. I picked this up when the iBookstore had it for $0.99. Had I paid anymore, I think I would have regretted buying The Average American Male. It's apparently a book that is categorized as "Fratire" that includes such literary masterpieces like The Alphabet of Manliness. Granted, I didn't know any of that when I got the book, Mostly I just saw reviews about how raunchy it was. For $.99 I thought, "What the heck." Now, I could go on and on about the satirical aspect of the book, but for the most part, I think over analysis of satire is almost as self-defeating just as much as none. Satire will work differently for everyone, so my reaction is not going to be useful to you. But there were problems with the book itself, story and structure-wise. Through-out the book, there are chapters that are titled "Some Chapter" instead of giving it a chapter number. They are other moments in the life of the unnamed protagonist's life that has nothing to do with the story, never are referenced again. They were a good thing as well as a bad thing for me. Bad in that I don't think they were needed except to pad a novelette into a novel. Good in that I think they were the funnier and stronger parts of the book. But even that good point is a bad one because I just admitted I would rather read "sketch literature," for lack of a better term, than the actual story this book was meant to present to me. With the vagueness of the title comes an overall vagueness of character. Granted, I can see where this was purposeful. I think it was poorly executed. I don't see what meaning is gained by its use and not just give the character a name and a specific job. For me, it just gives me a sense of selfish pretentiousness of both the author and the story. Character development was basically stagnant. The worst Adam Sandler movies have more over all character growth than this book. And it is a shame, because every time you think it will happen, an apparent need to not change at all overcomes the character and disappointment settles in the reader. If you can find it cheap, want something that is everything from funny to morally vacant in different ways to different people, I would say it's a quick read and will stay with you. But I think it is a book geared, despite being touted as satire, the guys that think they, too, can be pro wrestlers or UFC fighters.

I don't like most books but this ones good.. Cool iBook for a buck. I liked it and it kept me turning the pages. At times even laughed out loud. I'd recommend it.

Average?. It's fair to call this "The Average American Male," but the sex, the thinking about sex, all of it becomes too repetitive. In that, it accomplishes its goal of being "average." I liked it, but "Bright Lights, Big City" is a better read.

Classic Read. Classic Read! Enjoyed this accurate, entertaining and quite disturbing product!

It's real but fiction. Yea... It's vulgar but the book is suppose to convey a extreme view of what people today think is the average guy

An excellent read. While yes it is exaggerated, it does give an accurate view on the lack of thought that men have and gives women a good insight to how shallow men can be. I found it absolutely hysterical and a great read, and I can't wait for the sequel.

Don't know quite what to say!. While there is a certain amount of truth to the male psyche expressed in this story, it certainly does not lack being incredibly explicit and definitely over the top. That said, it was funny, made me laugh out loud on several occasions and was hard to put down (read the whole thing in probably 4 hours). I also appreciated a certain uniqueness in its style. The short chapters that read like individual short stories, the semi-randomness of events and something about the way the plot jumped in at the point of the middle of one relationship and the entry into another felt different. The collective of characters were also well-developed, though extreme caricatures in most respects. I definitely enjoyed it, will likely read his other book and was a little disappointed when it came to an end.

Lowbrow but really funny.. This is a surprisingly amusing read. Yes its raunchy & yes its shallow but its still really funny. It has the feel of ellis' american psycho minus the violence & minus the literary significance. Its a poor mans american pyscho if you will. If you are into mindless college humor then this is a must read. If you are easily offended then stay away at all costs.

average american male. This book has suprised me , was it bad ? no , was it good ? not particulary , but what it did good was hold my attention. What people on the iBooks store have to realize is that the .99c u spend gets split up into so many places before Chad here gets any of it , he does it for personal enjoyment. Maybe I'm wrong maybe he can get rich I don't care , the book WILL hold your attention as a male in early 20s for me it did, it's sexists no doubt about it , but it not only satisfys your raunchy insides which we only discuss in times of heavy drinking or in our private corners. People should be more open about their sexuality ! your .99c will not go to waste def a book worth keeping ! now onto more .99c bargains !!!!

great book. very fun to read..! once you get past some of the language you will find yourself laughing so much it will be hard to put it down. This is truly a look into the mind of an average american male!

Great Read. Before reading this book, I read the reviews as I do for every book I download. After reading the first five pages, I knew this would be a great read. I read it in 9hrs. Couldn't, or rather, didn't want to put it down. I'm looking for a woman's version or something close to this book. If anyone knows of anything, please let me know.

hilarious. Don't be a stiff, just give into what the book is and accept that. It's very funny and you WILL laugh! I hate myself for being able to relate to the character the little bit that I can...

I’m a lesbian now. Women > Men

Great read. Funny

Hilarious!!. I normally don't read fiction. But this was so good I read it in three days! Vulgar and hilarious!

Funny, relatable, and a joy to read. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. You can relate very well to the topics, events, and some of the stories the author talks about. This does have a lot of harsh language and descriptive detail so if you are easy offended by that then don't buy the book. I got this book when it was $.99 but honestly I would buy it for $9.99 and I plan on buying his other book. I looked at some of the "most critical" reviews and they all talk about the same point, one that I already brought up. If harsh and sexual descriptive language offends you then don't buy the book. Go re-read your gay vampire novels or Harry Potter. If those things don't make you gasp and shake your head with disgust then please do yourself a favor and buy this enjoyable book. Trust me, if you are on the fence about it just get it and you will be pleased.

Surprisingly good. I found this book quite entertaining. The lead character was both easy to relate to, and surprising at the same time. Very Good...

Very entertaining read. A very funny, very vulgar, awesome book. Well worth it.

The ave man book. Great

Great!. This book from the very beginning is hysterical but also true in the thoughts of most men. Personal favorite.

Disgusting. Do all guys really think like this? Or is it just made up by a struggling writing begging for equally disgusting readers.
