The Omen Machine by Terry Goodkind Book Summary

In The Omen Machine, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Terry Goodkind returns to the lives of Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell—in a compelling tale of a new and sinister threat to their world.

Hannis Arc, working on the tapestry of lines linking constellations of elements that constituted the language of Creation recorded on the ancient Cerulean scroll spread out among the clutter on his desk, was not surprised to see the seven etherial forms billow into the room like acrid smoke driven on a breath of bitter breeze. Like an otherworldly collection of spectral shapes seemingly carried on random eddies of air, they wandered in a loose clutch among the still and silent mounted bears and beasts rising up on their stands, the small forest of stone pedestals holding massive books of recorded prophecy, and the evenly spaced display cases of oddities, their glass reflecting the firelight from the massive hearth at the side of the room.

Since the seven rarely used doors, the shutters on the windows down on the ground level several stories below stood open as a fearless show of invitation. Though they frequently chose to use windows, they didn't actually need the windows any more than they needed the doors. They could seep through any opening, any crack, like vapor rising in the early morning from the stretches of stagnant water that lay in dark swaths through the peat barrens.

The open shutters were meant to be a declaration for all to see, including the seven, that Hannis Arc feared nothing.

Classic Goodkind. This story follows Goodkind's normal story arch. Stuff happens that threatens reason freedom and autonomy, the mother confessor is separated from Richard, and he drops everything to get her. That being said the story is still good. After confessor I told myself I wouldn't read any more Goodkind. I will read the next book. Even though this book followed Goodkind's normal story arch I feel like he is trying to tell a different story. I guess we will find out in about a year won't we.

4 star good. This book was very good I loved every Book about Richard and Kahlan's journeys and this one kept me on my feet. But, this book and Terry's most recent book "the first confessor" we're much shorter than I feel like they should have been. This book was cut not only short but many areas in the book were rushed where as the original series were so in depth with detail and not a single part of the story was left out unless there is a future book to pick up where this one left off with hannis arc still alive and after rule of the Dharan empire. Terry goodkind is a phenomenal writer and highly talented but I feel like he is beginning to get lazy that's why this book only gets 4 stars.

Weak ending. It seemed tedious and a bit lazy for the author to use the same drawn out story line for two characters ( not going to give anything away here). I found the character development weaker then the rest of the series and practically little of the well know known magic of the war wizard present.

A must have... If you've read the books following up to this one. I received wizards first rule as a gift when I was a teenager. Read parts of it and never really pursued it. 6 months ago I picked it back up and before even finishing the first half of it I purchased ALL the books in the series. I'm in the midst of a battle between reading or sleeping. . . Amazing story by Goodkind

Loved it. I always wait so anxiously for the next terry goodkind novel and now I remember why

Decent. I expected much more, however not as preachy as his previous novels. Great story but the ending is horrible. What happened to hannis arc.....?

Not good, but could be worse. I am disappointed with the book, but not as much as I was with the previous one. The Law of Nines at least looked like it could be extremely interesting and really great, and it was pain to realize in the end that the story wasn't properly concluded (this is my opinion of course). Here I didn't have such a feeling - from the beginning it was clear that the book was far from being the best of all the books of Goodkind. The plot is secondary, nothing new. Same ideas, same problems, same dilemmas, same solutions. It was interesting earlier, but now it is dull and not fun at all. I truly respect Terry Goodkind, especially for his very first book, but he must invent something entirely new. Thanks anyway

No ending?. The tale of Richard and Kahlan is fun but with no ending. Goodkind's stories would be much better with an ending, even if I don't agree with his message.

Ummmm. I bought this book when it came out. Was reading it just a few days ago and now all of a sudden it wont open. Look it up in store and it says I dont even own it now. What’s going on? I want my book or the money I paid for it back so I could repurchase? It’s just all sorts of wrong

Disappointing. Agree with previous posts that using the same drawn out plot line for two characters seemed lazy. I also thought the end story was tied up to quickly and simplistically. I loved this series but am sad to see that the last few books have in my option gone so far down hill.

The Omen Machine. Terry Goodkind is a master story teller. His books contain suspense, mystery, action and so much more. They truly are magical! The characters are so real that when you finish a book you almost feel like you are missing an old friend and can't wait to read the next one so you can catch up with them!!

True Disappointment. Absolutely awful. I can't believe this is the same Terry Goodkind that wrote the great books before this. I am a huge fan of the Sword of Truth series and was thrilled to see a new book come out. This was incipid, weak and incomplete. Zed used to be a knoweledgeable and powerful wizard. Now he is a bumbling fool who knows nothing. Kahlan was a stron character; now she is a weak woman that needs to be taken care of. The magic is weak; the story incomplete (terrible ending with too many lines left open - I understand setting up a sequel, but this seems to end mid-story). And don't get me started on the narrator. Everything is overly dramatic like he is reading to an 8 year old. He raises his voice and gets oh so dramatic at any scene with any action. I rarely give poor reviews but this is a big thumbs down!

Too short and weak story. Good kind has gone way down hill. He gotten way to lazy, he does not explore his supporting characters like he used too, and his Richard always figuring out a problem that no one else can grasp and his rush to save kahlan from every bad person in every book is getting very predictable and boring.

Way too short. Good book, but way too short.

A good sequel to Sword of Truth. An enjoyable read. Not Goodkind's best book, but still good for anybody who is a fan. I look forward to the next installment.

..... Great work as always by Terry Goodkind. I am a but disappointed tho. I felt like it was just the beginning of the story not a whole story. It feels as though I missed something. There is much more yet to discover! I hope there is another book in the works! I can't wait to see how things unfold for Richard and Kahlan!

!!!!!!. Very good storyline... But kind of need to read first ten books to understand

The Story Continues. I was so happy to see that Goodkind was continuing the series. This book was not as complex and in depth as his earlier ones, but was still a great read and I am looking forward to seeing how the story progresses.

Awesome last quarter of the book!. A great new book continuing the story of Richard and Khalan. The first 3/4 of the book seemed to be more of a set-up for the upcoming new series, while it was good....the best part was the last fourth of the book when the action heated up. I am starting the count down for the next book already, I can't wait!!

Kind of repetitive. This was a good book overall but there was section that just seem to repeat themselves especially with the hounds chasing Kahlan and the boy could've been a little bit I don't know different there got kind of old but I really like his books and I will probably buy the next one thanks bye

Reads like a Legend of the Seeker episode. I was thrilled to purchase a new Richard and Khalan novel, although the title worried me, because prophecy or "omens" are getting way overused in his books. The disappointment came when the characters behaved more like their television counterparts, instead of the fiercely independent purveyors of justice that I loved in the previous books. The action was slow, the setting boring, and the characters Sam Raimified. Seriously, I thought I was reading a Legend of the Seeker script. I felt no sense of magic or power in this book. Richard did not behave as the War Wizard Seeker Double Badazz Bruce Lee Don't Mess With Me Or I'll Vaporize You In A Blink Of A Blink Of An Eye ruler of the world. And Khalan sure lost the respect of being Mother Confessor. This book unfortunately reminds me of the last few Robert Jordan Wheel of Time novels before his passing, unimaginative and slow. If you are a huge Goodkind fan, by all means pick up a copy at the library, but I could have easily lived without ever having read this one, which is sad.

The Omen Machine. Classic Goodkind. Characters in jeopardy up to the very end, obscure prophecies, it was an enjoyable read.

The Omen Machine. Love it! It leaves me wanting more. TG keep writing, I'll keep reading.

Loved it. I usually love Terry Goodkind books and was so happy to read another. Can't wait for the next one.
