Dust by Patricia Cornwell Book Summary

With unparalleled high-tension suspense and the latest in forensic technology, Patricia Cornwell once again proves her exceptional ability to surprise—and to thrill—in this electrifying Kay Scarpetta novel.

A body, oddly draped in an unusual cloth, has just been discovered inside the sheltered gates of MIT, and it’s suspected the identity is that of missing computer engineering grad student Gail Shipton, last seen the night before at a trendy Cambridge bar. It appears she’s been murdered, mere weeks before the trial in her $100 million lawsuit against her former financial manager, and Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta doubts it’s a coincidence. She also fears the case may have a connection with her computer genius niece, Lucy.

In Dust, Scarpetta and her colleagues are up against a force far more sinister than a sexual predator who fits the criminal classification of a “spectacle killer.” The murder of Gail Shipton soon leads deep into the dark world of designer drugs, drone technology, organized crime, and shocking corruption at the highest levels.

Dust. I don't write many reviews and I'm not overly critical as long as the story keeps me interested. Unfortunately I had to force myself to finish this one. It never got off the ground for me. Very boring with a lackluster ending to boot.

Dust. I usually can't wait for this author's next book; however, I was very disappointed when I read it. The ending was weird and I just couldn't get into this book. I put it down several times, and I had to make myself pick it up, hoping it would get better...not! I guess every author can write one not up to the public's expectations!

From a medical professional. Awesome read! Cornwall doesn't disappoint with her newest book.

Save your money. Save your time.. A struggle to read. Story line very hard to follow. The author feels the need to interpret the dialog as it unfolds...very muddy and almost zero entertainment value.

Dust. Another dud, her second in a row. I will pass on Her next one.

Getting old. I haven’t read any of Cornwall’s books that I really used to like. Then they got more into their feelings and desires of each character and it just got old. I thought I’d give this one a try and it seamed like the same story with different dead people.

Just ok. Too much descriptive writing that didn't add anything. In the end it seemed like the story had to end in like 5 paragraphs and it was done. Not a very entertaining story.

Great!!. Patricia Cornwell never disappoints! Can't wait for the next adventures of Kay, Benton and Lucy!

Subpar for PC.. Have read at least 8 Patricia Cornwell novels most starring Kay Scarpetta. They ranged from very good to great. Not this one. It was ok and I read to the end just to get there. To be honest I don’t believe Cornwell wrote this book. Style was different, lack of focus and most jarring the main characters were not likable any more. Kay Scarpetta’s ego no longer fits in a circus tent ( every man desires her and she’s always the smartest person in the room if she does say so herself and she does say so often.) Lucy is smug and unlikeable and Marino is now the old guy screaming at kids to get off his lawn. Also the local descriptions were excessively wordy adding 30 pages that didn’t move the story. Again it read as though written by a ghost writer. I have enjoyed this series up to now but will probably pass on future efforts by Ms Cornwell. Did give three stars as the story was fairly interesting.

Dust. Pat Cornwell never disaapoints

ER doc. Once again I am disappointed by this latest novel, having been a fan since reading her first book while a medical student in Richmond, VA. The novel starts out interesting enough but then just gets boring. When the cases are finally solved, it's as if the murderer was just thrown in all of a sudden. Her books are getting worse and worse.

Another great Patricia Cornwell book. Great Scarpetta novel! Just as all of Cornwell's are, with all the usual characters. Great read!

More. I have read the entire Scarpetta series and loved them all; however, this left me feeling like there should have been more...

Slow and uninteresting. The story was slow and uninteresting. Not a page turner and had to force myself through it. Pretty disappointing read.

Dust. Another good Scarpetta read. Cornwall always researches her medical info so well, but this one is not as suspenseful as previous ones. A tad disappointing after waiting so long to visit with Scarpetta, Benton and Marino again.

As usual...outstanding!. What more can be said? A fantastic storyteller...

Dust. Not Cornwell's best Scarpetta novel but still pretty good.

Dust. Not a very good book. I wasted my money buying this book. I will not buy more of her books . Just stick with James Patterson one of the best writers today. Ben Dendy

Dust. Good read like some of her older books.

Interesting book. Very good!

Another disappointment!. I used to love her stories. But the last 10 years her books are such disappointments. So surprised she can still make it to NY Times best sellers. I got to stop wasting time and money on her books.

Dust. Love these Kay Scarpetta books and the character development of all of the players.

Dust. One of her best in awhile. Great writing. Plot hums along. I enjoyed it.

Overboard. I used to love the scarpetta novels - not this one. The characters are getting old and cliche. There are too many details about mundane items that takes away from the story. Sorry Kay, Lucy and Marino.... I won't be reading about your next location

Dust. What chore to read. I usually lover her stuff!

Well.... I have read every book in this series, the AndY Brazil and Win Garano series. I had hoped that this one would be better then the last two. But not to be. I feel as the writer’s bordom with the charater is showing. The books use to not have such a cookie cutter read.

Disappointed. I struggled to get through the book. Way too wordy on the way to the plot. The detail of ever scene was way over the top and wandered all over the board. Seldom make a comment on a book but this one was so bad felt I needed to.

Disappointed. If you have read her previous books and thought the characters were getting too whiney don't buy this one - it only gets worse. All the characters just come off as pathetic.

Great Book, one of the best in awhile. I have been a fan of Patricia Cornwell's for many years now and addictively read each one as they are released. It pains me to say that I haven't been to happy with the last few Scarpetta books and actually have considered not reading the next to come out. But this one is great. It pulled me in and wouldn't let me go. I care about all of the characters again. I would love to have a book come out that is based on Lucy. I would like to know more about Lucy and her life. Brava Patricia Cornwell! Brava! Can't wait for next one! :)

What Happened To Patricia?. The Postmortom Patricia? I just cant justify paying for her work any longer.

Great read!. This is a very well written book by Cornwell. It has a good plot and you do not know how it will end. I am surprised that others are negative. Do not let them keep you from enjoying this thrilling story!

The Dust. Awesome, as always! I couldn't put it down, and as happens when I'm reading an exceptionally good book, I was sorry to see it end!

Awful. I tried. Just couldn't get past the point when Marino was waiting for her to come out of the house. I won't get another. Glad I checked it out form the library and didn't waste money on it.

Ok-. Ok but really, evidence tampering is evidence tampering- both Granby & Lucy should have both been arrested Does not flow well, but ok

Dust. Ms. Cornwell appears to have migrated from medical mystery/thriller writer to technical writer. Not a bad thing but not what I expected. The Kay-Lucy-Benton trio have also changed, appearing not so much as investigative tour de forces but as product name-dropping conspicuous consumers. I’ve considered her menus, technology and geography lessons as story bonuses but now food lists and acronyms appear wantonly plunked in. I adjusted when the author switched to the first-person but here a first-person internal monologue/stream of consciousness narrative style didn't serve to reveal our heroine in a very good light. Throughout the book series, Dr. Kay Scarpetta has been portrayed as the beautiful, brilliant, intuitive, medical professional whose understanding of deviant psychology helped her become an ace (and apparently very rich) crime-solver. We now learn she's just returned home from Newtown. And we’ve come to expect things from her..... perhaps she'll offer insights. Not to be (nor to be connected at all to the main tale). What we learn instead is how shockingly pedestrian her internal monologues actually are: I'm so depressed about the Newtown tragedy. (Yes, Kay, and so are we.) I’m tired, I’m hungry, what will I make for the next meal, when will Benton get back, my niece is so fantastic, my sister is not, my mother’s not so great either, I need Merino's adoration but can’t get past his behavior to me decades ago. Plot, character development, personality insights were all sacrificed in favor of focus on self. And that, I think, becomes the disappointment. I kept looking over to my little dog’s pillow with the embroidered proclamation - ‘It’s All About Me’.

Totally Engrossing!!. Once I started reading this runaway circus train of a story I couldn’t put it down. Kay is at her best. Benton is sharp, introspective and intuitive as a BAU leader. Lucy is devilishly clever. The unsub is wildly devolving. The action is nonstop and absorbing. You won’t be able to put this book down until your vision blurs! An absolutely fabulous read!!

Dust. The Dr Scarpetta of old is back. Great read.

Enjoyed very much. This was my first read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was pulled in the detail and imagery. The story is well written and easy to follow. I enjoyed the complexity of the well woven plot and length of the book made me feel like I got my monies worth.

Dust. I've read all of Patricia Cornwell's books and this was a bit flat. It felt like she was just cranking out another novel. I love the Kay Scarpetta character but I think Ms Cornwell sold us short this time.

Slow read. I could not get into this book.

The Dust. I enjoyed the book, it was well written and was a page turner.

Don't Bother. Have read many of her books, this one was a total disappointment. The story line was very disconnected and it just seemed to drag on forever.

Struggled to finish.. The book dragged on and on.

Dust. Yes, I read the reviews and bought it anyway. Very, very slow. I am making myself finish it. Will let you know if it gets better. OK, I skipped a lot. The ending was good but it was painful getting there.

Dust. Too soon after the terrible tragedy in Connecticut to put it in a book. Kay Scarpetta is not fun to read anymore, the story lines are boring, the killers gruesome and everyone in the story need to snap out of it. An amazing author that needs some fresh happy characters.

Dust. Very boring, did,nt even want to finish it! Won,t buy any of her books again!

Couldn't finish it!. The author goes on and on and on about her dead husband, her investigator, her own feelings. Very boring book. Very intense descriptions of thoughts and feelings, in the past, in the present, and on and on, that are full of annoying phrases and language. The book certainly doesn't get to the point. If you are looking for a good read, I suggest something else. I actually don't even give it one star.

Confusing. Boring. Repetitive rehashing of past. I also couldn't be bothered to finish this book. Sorry I spent the money. My sense is that the quality of this series has been leaching out over the last few books. This one is disjointed, verbose and tiresome. Time to retire this series.
