The Panther by Nelson DeMille Book Summary

New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille returns with another heart-pounding John Corey thriller—this time including Corey’s FBI agent wife Kate Mayfield… and their mission is to catch an elusive terrorist mastermind before he catches them.

Anti-Terrorist Task Force agent John Corey and his wife, FBI agent Kate Mayfield, have been posted overseas to Sana'a, Yemen-one of the most dangerous places in the Middle East. While there, they will be working with a small team to track down one of the masterminds behind the USS Cole bombing: a high-ranking Al Qaeda operative known as The Panther. Ruthless and elusive, he's wanted for multiple terrorist acts and murders-and the U.S. government is determined to bring him down, no matter the cost. As latecomers to a deadly game, John and Kate don't know the rules, the players, or the score. What they do know is that there is more to their assignment than meets the eye-and that the hunters are about to become the hunted.

Filled with breathtaking plot turns and told in John Corey's inimitable voice, The Panther is a brilliant depiction of one of the most treacherous countries in the world and raises disturbing questions about whether we can ever know who our enemies - or our allies - really are.

The panther. Typical demille. However, lacked the excitement of not being able to put the book down. ***

Awesome as usual. I enjoy the style of writing DeMille uses when writing his John Corey character. He makes you laugh even while in the middle of an incredibly suspenseful situation. Bringing Corey and Paul Brenner (of The General's Daughter) together worked very well. Now he should try one written from Brenner's perspective. Great book, tough to set down!

The Panther. Love John Corey and Kate. Thank you for many hours of enjoyable reading.

What happened ?. I hate to say it, but I did not enjoy this book. I've read almost all DeMille's books and certainly every book with John Corey as a main character. The Panther is nowhere close to Plum Island, The Lion, Lion's Game etc. I've always enjoyed DeMille's fast pacing story, chills, witted humor of detective John Corey, which was hard to find in the Panther except the last one. It took me about two months to dig through almost 600 pages and sometimes it felt like I just have to finish the book, because I paid for it.

The Panther. I mostly enjoyed the book, been a fan of DeMille for some time. Made for some light adventure reading and I felt like I learned something about Yemen. The protagonist and his narrative are so 'smart assy' that it detracts from the story though. I mean every other sentence seems to be some sophomoric thought or utterance and it really starts to wear you out. The female character building is weak, as their role is primarily scenery and to blithely follow the 'genius' of the main character.

C'mon Nelson?. I am a huge fan of Mr. DeMille. As others have stated I have read all of his books and several of them more than once. I can safely say that this one will be put on the self, never to be picked up again. It has the makings of a good story but it just never develops into one. There is to much descriptive prose on the history of Yemen, far to many wisecracks from Corey and just not enough action. C'mon Nelson, you can do better!!

Great book. Great book

Panther sleeps. I love DeMile and the Corey series and looked forward with great anticipation to this next installment but am sad to say it is not much of a read. It almost seems like someone wanting to give you some insights into Mideast politics and then decides to see if they can make it more palatable by weaving some loose story around it. Even Corey who was so wry and comical in the other novels is here forced to make some wise crack about every eight paragraphs to keep you from trailing off completely. I am used to starting these books and finishing them within days, unable to lay them down. This one I had to force myself to finish. Hoping the next one returns to the glories of the days of old.

Twisted. Long twisted tail of deceit in a dangerous country.

Stupid. I bought and read this great iBook about 3 years ago. Today Apple notifies me there is an update. So, am I supposed to read the book again to spot a few sentences Connelly may have added or deleted??? It'd make a heckuva of a lot more more sense if Apple would tell me what the update is. Stupid!!

Good not great.... Let me fist say that I enjoyed this book very much, huge John Corey fan! It took much longer for me to get sucked in to the story, much longer than say, Charm school or the Lion. You will put this book down feeling satisfied.

The panther sleeps tonight.. DeMille is just writing himself a big check based on the reputation he built writing really good books. This one is terrible. Corey is way over-done as a wiseass and the story just drags along. The only good news is that this book helped put me to sleep night after night while I attempted to finish reading it.

Not On Par. I've read all of DeMille's books. This is definitely not to par with The Charm School or Cathedral. John Corey's character is getting sillier and sillier, and not in a good way. DeMille seems to use him to make countless comments with a nudge and a wink. Corey's one-liners are obvious and unfortunately, now expected. DeMille's books are now very formulaic and that is disappointing, to me anyway.

Disappointing. I have read fall of Demille's books and loved nearly every one, but this disappoints. It is slow and the sarcastic character of Corey gets old fast. Oh well.

Engaging - but looking for more. Have read demille books for years and look forward to each next release. This was a good book, comical in Corey's humor and very descriptive. Only real complaint was that it ended quick and abrupt- leaving you hanging on some unfinished business. Hopefully that will be addressed in short order in his next book.

The Panter. This is one of the tidiest books I have read in a long time.It was so drawn out .Don't bother with this book .A real disappointment after the last book

Panther. Certainly not one of best efforts. Save the effort just read the last 100 pages where the whole story resides, otherwise suffer through the fist part with nothing but wisecracks and run-on sentences. IMHO

The Panther. Nelson DeMille has written some excellent books. This is not one of them. If you like action, read the last couple of chapters and skip the rest. The over use of sarcasm is, frankly, boring.

The Panther. I agree with the other reviews, skip thru the first 500 pages and read the rest. This was a bad one, skip it. I have read all of DeMille's books and he lost it on this one. I had hoped for another great writing after a long wait for The Panther. I m going back to re read Plum Island while DeMille gives it another try, hopefully very soon.

The Panther. Love Corey's mind. So ADHD. Fun.

The Panther. As always Mr. DeMille's writing was impeccable. The story; however, was only mildly interesting. The Middle East theme is wearing thin altogether and in the case of this novel it was quite predictable. If it were not for Nelson DeMille's prose I would have pit the book down long before I completed it. I would love to see something come out that was as fresh as Plum Island which, in my opinion was Nelson DeMille's best book and most creative book in a long time. Thanks for the entertains hours and keep writing.

The panther. This was the worst, most boring, deMille book or just about any other book have read. Nothing good can be said about this book. I have read all of DeMille and thousands of other books. This wad awful, should have ever been published. I won't read another DeMille book.

Disappointing. I have read and enjoyed almost all DeMille novels. This one was not up to his standards for action and suspense. 80% of the book was VERY slow moving and boring. The only action was the last 50 pages. 95% boring is too big an investment for 5% of pretty mediocre action. Save your money. Hopefully his next will be back to his usual standard.

Wake me up when something happens.. It takes 500 of the 892 pages before Corey and his wife even meet the last member of the team to hunt and kill "The Panther." if this book were any slower it would be at a stop. This is another example of an author living off of past success and mailing one in to keep the income stream alive and well. The wit and sarcasm of John Corey is annoying. He has a stupid comment to every thought and since the book is written in his first person narrative, not a paragraph goes by without his witless comments. I am 500 pages into the 900 pages of this boring book and am really struggling to finish it. I hope the ending is better but so far, there is no evidence to support this hope.

Snore!. Mr. DeMille, really? The last page turning, stayed up all weekend reading, book you wrote was The Charm School. The Panther is slow, plodding, and unoriginal. Only reason I finished it was the price I paid for the book in an airport.

Disappointing. The last 100 pages were great- only problem was getting through several hundred pages of very slow moving and boring writing. What has happened to what I used to look forward to reading? DeMille now fancies himself a comedian. A little of his "one liners" goes a long way. I had hoped for a return to his earlier style- but no luck. This will be it for me.

Too much filler. This was decent, but not my favorite of the John Corey series. Most of it seemed drawn out maybe too much dialogue. I loved every book before this and I hope Radiant Angel is better. John Corey's character is so good I feel like Nelson DeMille could write more exciting plots.

Really?. Used to love john corey.. He is confused to the extent of becoming irritating...

The panther. Can't believe one guy writes this book. Sure Nelson tells another great story, but how can one guy be so funny. It's lol practically every page. Come on, ND where's credit for your 'top secret' comedy staff writers.

John Corey at his wisea$$ best. Nelson DeMille writes yet another entertaining novel. My favorite is still The Gatehouse but that takes nothing away from this story. I thought it started to get bogged down a bit but than realized it was dealing with real life American Politics so accepted that. Great read!

The Panther. Another great John Corey novel. Love his sarcastic humor and wit. The devious CIA characters were perfect. Wonderful description of the different areas of Yemen. Couldn't put this book down and cannot wait for the next one!

Another winner. John Corey, Paul Brenner, and Kate in the same book. I'm 250 pages in and I keep waiting for Ted Nash to show up. I keep hoping for a John Corey movie

The Panther. Another great book by Demille. As always, Demille makes reading fun. Can't get enough of John Corey and Kate Mayfield story, keep writing and keep it coming, thanks so much.

Nice yarn, a little rushed at the end.. Good book, a little slow in the middle but always love John Corey. Wish the ending would have more meat and less rushed.

So - So. Not the best of the John Corey series. A lot of Corey wise-cracking which in some places humerous. Seemed to me to be slow in several spots and an unresolved ending. Except for having killed a rogue CIA agent a few books back, wife Kate, the FBI Babe, wasn't necessary to the story.

Great read. In typical DeMille fashion, this book held me from the start. I hate when a good book ends,

Good but slow paced. This Nelson Demille novel is good, but I found the story to be very slow to unfold. The highlight of the novel is the main character, John Corey. His thoughts and dialogue are wonderfully comic and make this otherwise slow moving story interesting. The novel's end, once you get there, does not disappoint.

Wow!!!. What a great novel to meld Brenner, Corey and the current drone warfare arguments. Unfortunately the storyline rings very realistic but DeMille's wit is again on full display. The worst thing is now I have to wait months for his next book!!

The panther. Do not buy this book. One of the worst book I have tried to read. Skipped half of the pages because it was just noise.

The Panther. So booooring. Gets a little exciting at the end. Not worth reading.

Enjoyable. While I thought there were way to many John Corey wise cracks, the book was a great read. I have read all of DeMilles books, and have not been disappointed.

Like Watching Paint Dry. I have read all of Mr. DeMille's books and I can say unequivocally that this is his worst work. It is so far from the quick, funny, suspenseful novel Gold Coast, that it feels like a dictionary writer penned the novel. I bought the audio book version to drive the round-trip from LA to San Francisco. I can honestly say that I could have listened to the book for the first 10 miles of my trip, turned the volume off, driven to SF, got into adventures, driven back to LA and turned the volume back at the same location, and would have not missed any pertinent information to the storyline. One of the most annoying things is the incessant “wise-ass” comments made by the protagonist, Mr. Corey. I assume they are supposed to be witty and humorous, but they are neither. If Mr. Corey were a real person, he would be friendless and/or would be used by the CIA at Gitmo..his inane dribble would be feared around the world. Save your money or buy one of his early novels.

The panther. Not up to expectations, in fact, rather boring. John Corey's sarcasm is getting old. Only finished it because I paid too much for it.

Too slow, too bad. Love all DeMille novels but this one needed an editor. On and on for hundreds of pages with no plot other than a tour of Yemen. Never got into the story. Gave up. Hope it's instructive for DeMille to get back to fast paced, exciting, irreverent Corey and his wife. Operative words: fast paced. I would really like advice. After reading 300 pages of sameness, I bailed out . How far can I skip ahead before I can get into the plot without missing anything? Welcome suggestions. I invested a lot of time traipsing around in Yemen with little to show for it. Thanks.

The Panther. I love DeMille's books and couldn't wait for this one. The plot was great, but John Corey's sarcasm was overboard. Got annoying and ruined it in places.

DeMille's Best Work. Having read many of DeMille's earlier works, I could see how his writing has improved with age. I enjoyed learning more about the Mid-Eastern culture, and I liked DeMille's interpretation of what goes through the mind of a terrorist. My only regret is not reading the first two books in this series (The Lion's Game & The Lion), which are both excellent works after a fairly boring Plum Island. I look forward to reading another John Corey book.

No more sequels. DeMille was so much better before he started doing sequels.

The Panther. DeMille never let's me down. The quick, hilarious wit of John Corey coupled with the suspense is never short of brilliant. Another must read by DeMille...

Another strong effort. This book is a great overall read. I love Corey's quick wit and I find myself frequently chuckling out load. Deep story and enjoyable the whole way through.

Used to be a favorite author. I'm not too sure what happened to the quality of writing that DeMille is known for, but this is not one of his best books. He seems to be off his game.

Disappointed again. Last two de Mille books with John Corey have been BIG disappointments. While Corey may have shown his wittiness and contempt for authority (and others) the stories have been slow with little action. Couldn't even finish the panther. Back to Jack Reacher and Mitch Rapp.

action?. I am used to things happening with the author. Lots of talking between the players, but not much happening until the last hundred pages in THE PANTHER. Boring? no. Just different.
